Autonomist Marxist Theory and Practice in the Current Crisis Brian Marks1 University of Arizona School of Geography and Development [email protected] Abstract Autonomist Marxism is a political tendency premised on the autonomy of the proletariat. Working class autonomy is manifested in the self-activity of the working class independent of formal organizations and representations, the multiplicity of forms that struggles take, and the role of class composition in shaping the overall balance of power in capitalist societies, not least in the relationship of class struggles to the character of capitalist crises. Class composition analysis is applied here to narrate the recent history of capitalism leading up to the current crisis, giving particular attention to China and the United States. A global wave of struggles in the mid-2000s was constituitive of the kinds of working class responses to the crisis that unfolded in 2008-10. The circulation of those struggles and resultant trends of recomposition and/or decomposition are argued to be important factors in the balance of political forces across the varied geography of the present crisis. The whirlwind of crises and the autonomist perspective The whirlwind of crises (Marks, 2010) that swept the world in 2008, financial panic upon food crisis upon energy shock upon inflationary spiral, receded temporarily only to surge forward again, leaving us in a turbulent world, full of possibility and peril. The Ethnographic Research of the Digital Divide
DIGITAL DIVIDE IN ISTRIA A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Communication of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Igor Matic August 2006 The dissertation entitled DIGITAL DIVIDE IN ISTRIA by IGOR MATIC has been approved for the School of Telecommunications and the College of Communication by Karen E. Riggs Professor, School of Telecommunications Gregory J. Shepherd Dean, College of Communication ABSTRACT MATIC, IGOR, Ph. D., August 2006, Mass Communication DIGITAL DIVIDE IN ISTRIA (209 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Karen E. Riggs This dissertation covers the Digital Divide phenomena in the Istrian region. Istria is a Northern Adriatic peninsula that is administratively divided between three European countries: Croatia (which covers approximately 90% of the peninsula), Slovenia (app. 7%), and Italy (app. 3%). In this dissertation my goal was to articulate the most influential theoretical frameworks that are used to explain the Digital Divide today and I try to give an explanation of the issue through ethnographic procedures. The goals of this research include the examination of the current Digital Divide debate, extension of the theory toward the local understanding and perception of this global phenomenon. Additionally, I wanted to identify different interpretations of the Digital Divide in three countries within one region and compare the differences and similarities in new technology usage and perceptions. Also, I was interested to see how age - which is described as one of the major Digital Divide factors - influences the relationships between older and younger generations, specifically relationships between parents and children, instructors, students and co-workers. -
The Contribution of Czech Musicians to Nineteenth- and Early Twentieth-Century Musical Life in Slovenia
The Contribution of Czech Musicians to Nineteenth- and Early Twentieth-Century Musical Life in Slovenia Jernej Weiss Studies so far have not given a thorough and comprehensive overview of the activities of Czech musicians in the musical culture of Slovenia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This article thus deals with the question of the musical, social and cultural influences of Czech musicians in Slovenia in the period discussed. More precisely: in which areas, how and to what extent did in particular the most important representatives of the Czech musicians in Slovenia contribute? The numerous Czech musicians working in Slovenia in the 19th and early 20th century actively co-created practically all areas of musical culture in Slovenia. Through their acti- vities they decisively influenced the musical-creative, musical-reproductive, musical-peda- gogical and musical-publicist areas, and strongly influenced the transition from a more or less musically inspired dilettantism to a gradual rise in terms of quality and quantity of musical culture in Slovenia. Those well-educated Czech musicians brought to Slovenia the creative achievements of musical culture in Czech lands. Taking into account the prevalent role of Czech musicians in Slovenia, there arises the question whether – with regard to the period in question – it might be at all reasonable to speak of “Slovenian Music History” or better to talk about “History of Music in Slovenia”. It is quite understandable that differences exist between music of different provenances; individual musical works are therefore not only distinguished by their chronological sequence and related changes in style, but also by different geographic or sociological (class, cultural, and even ethnic) backgrounds.1 Yet the clarity of these characteristics varies, for they cannot be perceived in precisely the same way or observed with the same degree of reliability in a musical work.2 In this respect, the national component causes considerable difficulties. -

The Civilianization of Military Law
THE CIVILIANIZATION OF MILITARY LAW Edward F. Sherman* PART I I. INTRODUCTION Military law in the United States has always functioned as a system of jurisprudence independent of the civilian judiciary. It has its own body of substantive laws and procedures which has a different historical deri- vation than the civilian criminal law. The first American Articles of War, enacted by the Continental Congress in 1775,1 copied the British Arti- cles, a body of law which had evolved from the 17th century rules adopted by Gustavus Adolphus for the discipline of his army, rather than from the English common law.2 Despite subsequent alterations by Con- gress, the American military justice code still retains certain substantive and procedural aspects of the 18th century British code. Dissimilarity between military and civilian criminal law has been further encouraged by the isolation of the court-martial system. The federal courts have always been reluctant to interfere with the court-martial system, as ex- plained by the Supreme Court in 1953 in Burns v. Wilson:3 "Military law, like state law, is a jurisprudence which exists separate and apart from the law which governs in our federal judicial establishment. This Court has played no role in its development; we have exerted no super- visory power over the courts which enforce it .... As a result, the court-martial system still differs from the civilian court system in such aspects as terminology and structure, as well as procedural and sub- stantive law. The military has jealously guarded the distinctive aspects of its system of justice. -
