Medtem ko Italijani in migranti sami sebe imenujejo ezuli, kar pomeni begunca, izgnanca (Ballinger 2003), je prevladujoč izraz v slovenskih in hrvaških diskurzih optant. DIGITAL DIVIDE IN ISTRIA A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Communication of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Igor Matic August 2006 The dissertation entitled DIGITAL DIVIDE IN ISTRIA by IGOR MATIC has been approved for the School of Telecommunications and the College of Communication by Karen E. Riggs Professor, School of Telecommunications Gregory J. Shepherd Dean, College of Communication ABSTRACT MATIC, IGOR, Ph. D., August 2006, Mass Communication DIGITAL DIVIDE IN ISTRIA (209 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Karen E. Riggs This dissertation covers the Digital Divide phenomena in the Istrian region. Istria is a Northern Adriatic peninsula that is administratively divided between three European countries: Croatia (which covers approximately 90% of the peninsula), Slovenia (app. 7%), and Italy (app. 3%). In this dissertation my goal was to articulate the most influential theoretical frameworks that are used to explain the Digital Divide today and I try to give an explanation of the issue through ethnographic procedures. The goals of this research include the examination of the current Digital Divide debate, extension of the theory toward the local understanding and perception of this global phenomenon. Additionally, I wanted to identify different interpretations of the Digital Divide in three countries within one region and compare the differences and similarities in new technology usage and perceptions. Also, I was interested to see how age - which is described as one of the major Digital Divide factors - influences the relationships between older and younger generations, specifically relationships between parents and children, instructors, students and co-workers.

No part of this book may be distributed, posted, or reproduced in any form by digital or mechanical means without prior written permission of the publisher. INTRODUCTION In the Shadow of the Balkans, on the Shores of the Mediterranean IN the border zone between Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia known as the Julian March reside members of families who were divided and scattered at the conclusion of the Second World War when Italy and Yugoslavia parti- tioned the region. These separated kin live on the fringes of the Gulf of Venice, an inner body of water making up part of the Adriatic Sea, which today divides populations as much as it once united them. Triestine writer Claudio Magris’s description of the forests in this region hold equally true for its seas: “The woods are at once the glorification and the nullification of borders: a plurality of dif- fering, opposing worlds, though still within the great unity that embraces and dissolves them” (1999, 107). Though the fluidity of the sea would appear to defy any attempt at sover- eignty, political borders cut through them. Indeed, the Adriatic’s waters have witnessed the struggles of diverse powers—in more distant epochs, Venice, Austria, and the Ottomans and in the last century, Italy and Yugoslavia—to se- cure and police the adjacent territories. The most recent example involves the dispute between Slovenia and Croatia over precisely where, in the tiny Gulf of Piran, to draw the maritime frontier between those two states, which declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.

  • Foibe Literature
Foibe literature: documentation or victimhood narrative? HUMAN REMAINS & VIOLENCE Louise Zamparutti University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee [email protected] Abstract This essay analyses the literature on the foibe to illustrate a political use of human remains. The foibe are the deep karstic pits in Istria and around Trieste where Yugoslavian Communist troops disposed of Italians they executed en masse during World War II. By comparing contemporary literature on the foibe to a selec- tion of archival reports of foibe exhumation processes it will be argued that the foibe literature popular in Italy today serves a political rather than informational purpose. Counterpublic theory will be applied to examine how the recent increase in popular foibe literature brought the identity of the esuli, one of Italy’s subaltern counterpublics, to the national stage. The paper argues that by employing the nar- rative structure of the Holocaust, contemporary literature on the foibe attempts to recast Italy as a counterpublic in the wider European public sphere, presenting Italy as an unrecognised victim in World War II. Key words: foibe, massacres, corpses, Communism, counterpublic, victimhood, Fascism Introduction The mass graves in the deep pit-caves known as thefoibe in the Istrian penin- sula and the Venezia Giulia region have received a large amount of attention in Italy since the end of the Cold War and the collapse of Yugoslavia. Information about their discovery and exhumation, however, is obscured by the ethno-political polemic surrounding how they should be memorialised. It is known that the foibe massacres occurred in two major waves, the first in the Istrian region in September and October 1943, and the second in and around Trieste immediately following Liberation in May 1945.

  • The Italians of Yugoslavia: 1. Istria and How It Got That
INSTITUTE OF CURRENT WORLD AFFAIRS DR-l The Italians of Yugoslvla: Belgrade, Yugoslavia 1. Istri and How It Got That Wy 25 February 1963 Mr. Richar& H. Nolte Institute o'f Current Worl& Affairs 366 Madison Avenue New York 17, N.Y. Dear Mr. Nolte: Normally, one goes to Istria for a holiday. Habsburg nobility, before 1914, favored Abbazia (now 0patlja), Austria's own fragment of Riviera, nd their presentday countrymen maintain the tradition under democratic and socialist uspices that have me an Atlantic City of this onetime Newport, R.I. Between the wars the island of Brloni was fashionable, which may be one reason why President Tito subsequently fenced it off as his own private seacoast retreat, leaving the rest of the dozens of large and small towns of the west coast an Ziburnia to become summer resorts for tens of thousands of Germans, Austrians, and other western Euroeans. I don't think, however, that my own latest visit, in iwinter 1963, can be accused of smelling like boondoggle. 0patlja was deep in snow, which had descended even on the Qurnero island of ZosinJ for the first time in living memory, and interior roads were impassable. But I had seen Istria in the dry heat of sttmmer, and now I wanted to see it in winter. Istrla fscinates me, you see, not as a country of coast resorts, but for its history an especially for the curiously exaggerate importance of its role in international relations of the past fifty years. The Istrian peninsula is a heart-shaped wedge thrusting southward and westward at the very top of the Adriatic Sea, where Slav, Zatin and Germn worlds meet.

ECONOMIC REGIONALISM IN THE MIRROR OF CROATIAN NATIONALISM: THE CASE OF ISTRIA, 1990-96 By JOHN EDWARD ASHBROOK A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2002 This dissertation is dedicated to four wonderful women and my son. First, there is my Mother, Susan Scantlebury, who gave me the love and support I needed to finish this long project called graduate school. Second, there is Michelle Phillips, a childhood fiiend, who died in 1990 just after I graduated from my first undergraduate institution. I miss you and think of you often, Shel. I hope you are exploring worlds more fantastic than the ones we explored together with our bizarre circle of friends. Third, there is my sister in spirit, Mary Sue Fields. Thanks for all the help on the dissertation and the love and support for 25+ years. Fourth, there is Magdalena Markovinovic, who recently entered my life. Your help and love in Croatia contributed a great deal to tliis work. Last, but not least, is Richard James Macdonald, my son. Richard, this dissertation and all my future work will be for you. I love you all and thank you for the time and support each of you gave me in so many different ways. Thanks for believing in a country boy's dream to make something of himself. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The research for this dissertation was funded by a Short Term Grant from the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC for research in the National Archives and the Library of Congress; a National Security Education Program Fellowship, 1998-9; and a Fulbright Student FeUowship, 2000-1.

  • Istria Under Italian Administration, on Istrian Émigrés and Their Press in Zagreb, 1918-1941), Dom I Svijet Zagreb: 2008., 296 Pp
review of Croatian History 4/2008, no.1, 189 - 230 Conclusion This book, based upon archival sources and highly diverse literature, sys- tematically and thoroughly presents the position of Croatia within socialist yugoslavia, political and international relations, and economic and social con- ditions. The author has based his work on archival research, mainly from the period of the 1940s and beginning of the 1950s, using published sources as well as the analysis of over 600 bibliographical entries from books, papers, newspa- per articles to works and contributions available on the Internet. The fact that this book is the first scientific synthesis exclusively concerned with the period of Croatian history after the Second World War is sufficiently indicative of its merit. In any case, the author offers responses to many questions which previ- ously had not been broached and presents new data that will provide incentive for the development of the historiographic profession in Croatia, especially recent Croatian history and the history of communism in these territories. This comprehensive work provides insight into the political, national, eco- nomic, social and other conditions, and the crucial events in Croatian history during the period of communist rule. moreover, the clear thematic-chrono- logical approach, accompanied by illustrative examples and tables, makes the complex subject matter easily accessible. The presentation is systematic, clear and attractive, and the text is highly readable. radelić’s book will fill a great void in Croatian historiography, meet the requirements of scholars and historians, and arouse great interest among the general public.
