Ao todo, foram registrados 96 nomes graficamente diferentes. Esses nomes, quando possível, foram analisados do ponto de vista etimológico, com base em consultas nos dicionários onomásticos de língua portuguesa de Nascentes (1952) e de Machado (1981), além de dicionários de língua inglesa, como os de Arthur (1857) e Reaney e Willson (2006). Foram também utilizados como materiais de análise a Lista de nomes admitidos em Portugal, encontrada no site do Instituto dos Registos e do Notariado, de Portugal, e a Plataforma Nomes no Brasil, disponível no site do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística. Quanto às análises morfológicas aqui empreendidas, utilizamos como aporte teórico-metodológico a Morfologia Construcional, da maneira proposta por Booij (2010), Soledade (2013), Gonçalves (2016a), Simões Neto (2016) e Rodrigues (2016). Em linhas gerais, o artigo vislumbra observar a trajetória do formativo –son na criação de antropônimos no Brasil. Comparative perspectives on the origins, development and structure of Amazonian (Karipúna) French Creole Jo-Anne S. Ferreira UWI, St. Augustine/SIL International Mervyn C. Alleyne UWI, Mona/UPR, Río Piedras Together known as Kheuól, Karipúna French Creole (KFC) and Galibi-Marwono French Creole (GMFC) are two varieties of Amazonian French Creole (AFC) spoken in the Uaçá area of northern Amapá in Brazil. Th ey are socio-historically and linguistically connected with and considered to be varieties of Guianese French Creole (GFC). Th is paper focuses on the external history of the Brazilian varieties, and compares a selection of linguistic forms across AFC with those of GFC and Antillean varieties, including nasalised vowels, the personal pronouns and the verbal markers. St. Lucian was chosen as representative of the Antillean French creoles of the South-Eastern Caribbean, including Martinique and Trinidad, whose populations have had a history of contact with those of northern Brazil since the sixteenth century. Data have been collected from both fi eld research and archival research into secondary sources. Introduction Th is study focuses on a group of languages/dialects which are spoken in Brazil, French Guiana and the Lesser Antilles, and to a lesser extent on others spoken in other parts of the Americas (as well as in the Indian Ocean). Th is linguistic group is variously referred to as Creole French, French Creole, French-lexicon Creole, French-lexifi er Creole, French Creole languages/dialects, Haitian/Martiniquan/St. Lucian (etc.) Cre- ole, and more recently by the adjective of the name of the country, particularly in the case of the Haiti (cf. -

On the geographical origins and dispersion of Tupian Language s Greg Urban University of Pennsylvania Where did the Tupian languages originate? How did they come to occupy the ir historical homelands? José Brochado (1984), filling in a n1ajor lacuna in Lathrap' s ( 1970) scheme, has added a distinctive voice to the long- standing debates surrounding these questions. Iam grateful to Francisco Noelli for bringing him to my attention. As Noelli indicates, Bro chado ' s work provides the foundations for dialog and coope ration between linguistic s, cultural anthropology, and archaeology. It is in the spirit of cooperation and dialogue that I'll make some friendly criticistns of his resea rch , as well as of the linguistic and cultural work pertinent to the question of Tupian origins. My purpo se will be to pinpoint areas for further research that might provide clue s for solv ing the continuing mystery surroundin g the Tupi. The Tasks of the Ethnologist and the Linguist in Brazil
INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SCIENCE BULLETIN THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF THE ANDAMAN ISLANDS I consider it a matter of urgency that the somatological surveys which the Indian anthropologists, Dr. B. G. Guha and Dr. S. S. Sarkar, initiated early in 1948 among the last önge tribes on Rutland Island and the surviving indigenous inhabitants on Little Andaman1 should be continued. There are probably now not as many as 50 representatives of the Önge tribes still surviving on Rutland Island. They and the indigenous inhabitants of the neighbouring islands could certainly furnish much valuable information concerning the racial and cultural characteristics of their stock and thus provide valuable material for a general study of the racial history of India and the surrounding region. I happen to know that the above-mentioned anthropologists had to abandon the field research they had undertaken, merely because they could not obtain the requisite financial resources. Unfortunately, very little material is available on the somatology of the Andaman islanders. It is therefore all the more regrettable that (as I found out privately) the large amount of anthropological material that Baron E. Von Eickstedt collected among these natives in January 1928 was lost in the last world war. Of the few suggestions put forward in this paper, I consider the most'urgent tasks to be somatological research among the original inhabitants of Little Andaman, and a comprehensive investigation of the true pygmies whom I discovered in the Schrader Mountains of New Guinea. THE TASKS OF THE ETHNOLOGIST AND THE LINGUIST IN BRAZIL DARCY RIBEIRO A study of the reactions of Brazilian Indian groups in the face of advancing civilization over the last fifty years, and of their prospects of survival, leads inevitably to the conclusion that tribal languages and cultures are gradually disappearing in modern Brazil. -
