Jahrhundert. Dieses Handbuch wird von der Forschungsstelle Kultur- impuls am Friedrich von Hardenberg Institut für Kulturwissenschaften in Heidelberg unter der Gesamtleitung von Bodo von Plato erarbeitet und soll im Laufe des Jahres 2003 fertiggestellt werden. Von dort erhielt ich die Vor- gaben zur formellen und inhaltlichen Abfassung dieser Biographien. Zu jeder porträtierten Person erhielt ich eine Dokumentation mit den wichtig- sten Lebensdaten, Kopien von Nachrufen und Würdigungen, ein Quellen- verzeichnis sowie eine Bestandesaufnahme der selbständigen Schriften in der Bibliothek am Goetheanum. In der Regel sind die hier vorliegenden Biographien etwas ausführlicher als diejenigen, die schliesslich im Handbuch erscheinen werden. Dies be- trifft insbesondere die Ausführungen zu den Angelegenheiten der Mathema- tisch-Astronomischen Sektion. Im genannten Handbuch findet man dann auch für die meisten in den Bio- graphien erwähnten, aber hier nicht weiter besprochenen Personen aus dem anthroposophischen Umfeld weitere Informationen. Die Auswahl der dargestellten Personen ist meines Erachtens repräsenta- tiv für die Entwicklung der Mathematisch-Astronomischen Sektion in den ersten beiden Dritteln des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sie umfasst, mit einer Aus- nahme, Personen, die vor der Gründung dieser Sektion 1923 geboren wur- den. Die Auswahl ist jedoch nicht vollständig, da dieser Arbeit auch äusser- liche Grenzen gesetzt werden mussten oder bereits Porträts aus anderen Federn vorlagen, wie zum Beispiel bei Alexander Strakosch und Ernst A. K. Stockmeyer. Hier nicht bearbeitete Personen sind im allgemeinen anderswo ausreichend dokumentiert oder porträtiert. Die biographischen Daten sind in den meisten Fällen aus den genannten Sekundärquellen erarbeitet, in wenigen Fällen ergänzt durch Erinnerungen der jeweils porträtierten Person. Sie sind in diesem Sinne nur bedingt ver- lässlich. Eine Überprüfung anhand eigener Recherchen sowie anhand von 7 dokumentarischem Material (falls vorhanden) konnte unter den gegebenen Bedingungen nur in Ausnahmefällen geleistet werden. Die Biographien von Lawrence Edwards und Olive Whicher wurden auf der Grundlage von Mate- rialien gemacht, die ich auf Anfrage direkt von beiden erhielt. Die Bibliographien oder Schriftenverzeichnisse mussten, von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen, anhand der vorhandenen Unterlagen neu zusam- mengestellt, kontrolliert, gegebenenfalls ergänzt und erweitert werden. Dies betrifft insbesondere die Erfassung der Aufsätze in Zeitschriften und Sam- melbänden. Im allgemeinen wurde Vollständigkeit angestrebt, abgesehen von kleinen bis kleinsten Notizen, Berichten oder Ankündigungen. Die be- wusst gemachten Ausnahmen sind bei den jeweiligen Autoren angeführt. Es wurden nur Übersetzungen ins Englische systematisch erfasst; auf die Erfassung von Übersetzungen in andere Sprachen wurde aus Gründen des Aufwandes verzichtet. Übersetzungen und/oder Neudrucke von Büchern und Aufsätzen wurden nicht auf Vollständigkeit oder Verlässlichkeit über- prüft. Ob ein und derselbe Text unter verschiedenen Titeln abgedruckt wurde, wurde ebenfalls nicht überprüft. Im Gegensatz zu den Biographien enthalten die Bibliographien nur selbst überprüftes Material, in den allermeisten Fällen durch unmittelbare Einsicht (vor allem in der Bibliothek am Goetheanum und in der Universitätsbiblio- thek Basel), oder, wenn dies nicht möglich war, durch Heranziehung mehre- rer bibliographischer Handbücher oder Bibliothekskataloge. Ein äusseres Zeichen der direkten Überprüfung ist die Angabe von Seitenzahlen bei Büchern und Zeitschriften. Fehlt diese, so habe ich das Buch bzw. den ent- sprechenden Zeitschriftenaufsatz nicht gesehen. Trotz dieser Kontrolle sind natürlich Übertragungsfehler nicht auszuschliessen. Abkürzungen wurden der leichteren Lesbarkeit halber so gut wie keine verwendet. Zeitschriftentitel werden meist in ihrer Vollform angegeben, um die eindeutige Identifizierbarkeit zu erleichtern. Für die genauere Identifi- zierung sowie für Standortnachweise der anthroposophischen Zeitschriften verweise ich auf das Standardwerk «Die anthroposophischen Zeitschriften von 1903 bis 1985» (Stuttgart 1985). 8 Zur Geschichte der Mathematisch-Astronomischen Sektion am Goetheanum Diese Geschichte muss noch geschrieben werden. Sie ist anhand der hier zusammengestellten Biographien und Bibliographien nur teilweise er- schliessbar. Es fehlt sowohl eine detaillierte chronologische und thematische Übersicht zu den Veranstaltungen der Sektion sowie eine Aufstellung über die Art und die Dauer der Mitwirkung verschiedenster Persönlichkeiten im Rahmen derselben. Die folgende Skizze der Leitungen der Mathematisch- Astronomischen Sektion am Goetheanum gibt für die folgenden Biogra- phien ein grobes Gerüst. Über die Personen mit einem * vor ihrem Namen können weitere Details in den entsprechenden Biographien gefunden wer- den. Die Mathematisch-Astronomische Sektion wurde während der Weih- nachtstagung 1923 zur Neubegründung der Allgemeinen Anthroposophi- schen Gesellschaft von Rudolf Steiner als Sektion der Freien Hochschule für Geisteswissenschaft am Goetheanum begründet, die unter seiner eigenen Leitung stand (GA 260). Diese Sektion kam zustande, da Steiner in *Elisa- beth Vreede eine erprobte Mitarbeiterin gefunden hatte, welche die Gebiete der Mathematik und Astronomie repräsentieren konnte. Im Jahre 1912 gab Rudolf Steiner ohne Namensnennung den «Kalender 1912/13» heraus mit dem zusätzlichen Titel «1879 nach des ICH-Geburt». Er enthielt nach einem Vorwort «Was gemeint ist» Bilder von Imme von Eckardtstein, ein Kalendarium mit Namenstagen und historischen Daten sowie den «Seelenkalender» (heute in GA 40). Eine ausführliche Bespre- chung und Würdigung dieses ersten Kalenders mit weiteren Literaturanga- ben findet sich in der Beilage zum «Sternkalender Ostern 1989 - Ostern 1990» von Suso Vetter: «Tierkreis-Imaginationen und Gedenktage im Jah- reslauf» (Dornach: Verlag am Goetheanum 1989). Um 1928 zieht Vreede den Mitarbeiter * Joachim Schultz an ihre Sektion und beginnt mit ihm zusammen in Anknüpfung an den ersten Sternkalender von Rudolf Steiner einen neuen Sternkalender herauszugeben mit dem ersten Jahrgang 1929/30. 9 Nach dem Ausschluss von Vreede aus dem Vorstand der Allgemeinen Anthroposophischen Gesellschaft am Goetheanum und der gleichzeitigen Entbindung von der Leitung der Mathematisch-Astronomischen Sektion während der Generalversammlung zu Ostern 1935 wurde * Hermann von Baravalle im November «mit der Wahrnehmung der Angelegenheiten der Mathematisch-Astronomischen Sektion» betreut (Goetheanum - Nachrich- tenblatt 12(1935)(46): 185). Er übernahm auch die Redaktion des Stern- kalenders. Wegen seiner Emigration 1937 in die USA hat Baravalle * Louis Locher für die Zeit seiner Abwesenheit «in Stellvertretung die Wahrnehmung der Angelegenheiten der Mathematisch-Astronomischen Sektion» übergeben (Goetheanum - Nachrichtenblatt 14(1937)(47): 183).     The Fairy Tale Sleeping Beauty and the Year 2020 By Richard John Fraser Cooper Who has not been taken aback by the unprecedented events of this year? Going forward, we are undoubtedly in a time of change, but what kind of change, and what may be learnt from times of change that have gone before? Much can be learnt when we more deeply question the events of one hundred years ago and see the movement of spiritual history in relation to 2020. Rudolf Steiner has drawn our attention to looking at history through the lens of 100 years. Each 100- year phase carries 3 x 33 1/3 years within it, to make a total of one hundred. Steiner showed how the rhythm of 331/3 years mirrors the life of Christ on earth, from birth to crucifixion and resurrection. It is therefore important to explore how we may reconnect with what was initiated 100 years ago, in its positive and negative aspects, to gain insight into mankind’s struggle toward the Christ impulse. 100 years ago from the ominous outbreak of the Coronavirus Crisis in 2020, the official implementation of the Treaty of Versailles was signed on the 10 January, 1920. The Treaty, enforcing reparation payments on Germany for its war guilt, was instrumental in laying the groundwork for the historical events that would later unfold; notably, the rearmament of Germany leading to the Second World War and the world order that would later emerge after 1945. Quite aptly, the signing had taken place in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles, in Paris, France, being rather symbolic of an elite struggling to pursue their own national and established political concerns separated from any of the spiritual implications of the decisions before them.

    Harry Collison, MA – Kingston University Working Paper __________________________________________________________________________________________ HARRY COLLISON, MA (1868-1945): Soldier, Barrister, Artist, Freemason, Liveryman, Translator and Anthroposophist Sir James Stubbs, when answering a question in 1995 about Harry Collison, whom he had known personally, described him as a dilettante. By this he did not mean someone who took a casual interest in subjects, the modern usage of the term, but someone who enjoys the arts and takes them seriously, its more traditional use. This was certainly true of Collison, who studied art professionally and was an accomplished portraitist and painter of landscapes, but he never had to rely on art for his livelihood. Moreover, he had come to art after periods in the militia and as a barrister and he had once had ambitions of becoming a diplomat. This is his story.1 Collisons in Norfolk, London and South Africa Originally from the area around Tittleshall in Norfolk, where they had evangelical leanings, the Collison family had a pedigree dating back to at least the fourteenth century. They had been merchants in the City of London since the later years of the eighteenth century, latterly as linen drapers. Nicholas Cobb Collison (1758-1841), Harry’s grandfather, appeared as a witness in a case at the Old Bailey in 1800, after the theft of material from his shop at 57 Gracechurch Street. Francis (1795-1876) and John (1790-1863), two of the children of Nicholas and his wife, Elizabeth, née Stoughton (1764-1847), went to the Cape Colony in 1815 and became noted wine producers.2 Francis Collison received the prize for the best brandy at the first Cape of Good Hope Agricultural Society competition in 1833 and, for many years afterwards, Collison was a well- known name in the brandy industry.

This means that I now have the opportunity to meet people, to get to know initiatives and to take a new look at many situations. I am eager to see what will develop and curious to discover more about the quality of Section life, whether individuals in their own community feel that their work is part of the Section or not and what kind of collaboration and support is needed today. In any case I want to ask all of you to get in touch at any time to let me know your suggestions, your wishes and requests, your criticisms: I am simply curious! Every ‘newbie’ is also given the opportunity to question the status quo in a quite new and perhaps ‘stupid’ way, so I am letting you know that the newsletter from the next issue will change in appearance.
