    1 JULIAN ALPS TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK www.slovenia.info 2The Julian Alps The Julian Alps are the southeast- ernmost part of the Alpine arc and at the same time the mountain range that marks the border between Slo- venia and Italy. They are usually divided into the East- ern and Western Julian Alps. The East- ern Julian Alps, which make up approx- imately three-quarters of the range and cover an area of 1,542 km2, lie entirely on the Slovenian side of the border and are the largest and highest Alpine range in Slovenia. The highest peak is Triglav (2,864 metres), but there are more than 150 other peaks over 2,000 metres high. The emerald river Soča rises on one side of the Julian Alps, in the Primorska re- gion; the two headwaters of the river Sava – the Sava Dolinka and the Sava Bohinjka – rise on the other side, in the Gorenjska region. The Julian Alps – the kingdom of Zlatorog According to an ancient legend a white chamois with golden horns lived in the mountains. The people of the area named him Zlatorog, or “Goldhorn”. He guarded the treasures of nature. One day a greedy hunter set off into the mountains and, ignoring the warnings, tracked down Zlatorog and shot him. Blood ran from his wounds Chamois The Triglav rose and fell to the ground. Where it landed, a miraculous plant, the Triglav rose, sprang up. Zlatorog ate the flowers of this plant and its magical healing powers made him invulnerable. At the same time, however, he was saddened by the greed of human beings.

    “English Translation” ECONOMY Competition for German railway Private American railway company wants to pursue Sylt-auto train Deutsche Bahn has their car trains, but only one route is still worth it: the Sylt shuttle between Niebüll and Westerland. Now Railroad Development Corporation from Pittsburgh wants to run it. 8 October 2014, by Kerstin Schwenningen, Berlin Deutsche Bahn, the national German railway, plans to eliminate motorail trains from their program because they are not economical. There is one exception: the so-called Sylt- Shuttle, which DB would like to continue even after 2017. But it is precisely this connection that lures private railway companies like RDC to Germany. "We want to pursue the auto train between Niebüll and Westerland on island of Sylt from December 2015," announced Henry Posner III, Chairman of the American parent company, The "Sylt-Shuttle" continues to roll on the island - the only question is, who will Railroad Development Corporation (RDC), and transport the cars in the future? "Therefore, RDC Deutschland (RDC-D) has applied to DB Netz for the allocation of train paths in a 10-year framework agreement." The auto train should operate daily from 4:00 AM to 11:00 PM every 30 minutes. At the moment the half hour cycle only applies at peak rush-hour times, otherwise the shuttle leaves every 60 or 90 minutes. If RDC operates the train to Sylt, the number of departures will increase by about half. The American railway company from Pittsburgh, founded by Posner in 1987, is active in many countries in the world including Germany as the majority shareholder of the Hamburg-Köln- Express GmbH (HKX), which has been competing with Deutsche Bahn since July 2012 on the Hamburg-Cologne route.

Stoilova Technical University of Sofia,8 Kliment Ohridski Blvd, Sofia 1000, Bulgaria, E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This paper aims to propose a methodology for assessing the criteria for the effectiveness of transportation of intermodal services “car on the train” named also motorail trains. The motorail trains offer service at which passengers can take their car along with them on their journey. The passengers are carried in the train, while the cars are loaded separately in specialized wagons of the same train. This study proposes a methodology based on the combination of Strengths- Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats (SWOT) analysis and multi-criteria Best-Worst method (BWM) to evaluate different criteria for assessment the motorail transportation. The methodology of the research includes two steps. The first step includes the SWOT analysis to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats related to passenger railway transport. The sub-criteria for each SWOT group has been defined. A total of 31 sub-criteria are included in this study. The second step includes the determination of the weights of the main criteria and sub-criteria. The Best Worst Method (BWM) which is based on a linear programming method has been applied. It was found that the main importance for SWOT group has the strengths group criteria. The methodology could be applied to evaluate different alternatives of development of passenger railway transport based on defined criteria, sub-criteria and their weights.

David Matthew Smith ABSTRACT The regional economic impact of the Channel Tunnel has engendered much public and private sector interest. Previous studies examining the regional implications of the Tunnel have argued that related development pressures will be largely confined to South East England, further widening the "North-South" divide. Economic Potential Analysis was earlier employed by Clark el. al. (1969) and Keeble et. al. (1982a) to model the geographical impact of the Tunnel on the relative accessibility of the UK regions. The conclusions drawn from these studies support the proposition that the South East would gain at the expense of the more peripheral regions. However, the important implications of a rail-only Tunnel have yet to be modelled. The results of the present study show that opportunities created by the Tunnel could be spread more evenly than had previously been predicted. However, following a review of the legislative and policy environment of the Tunnel and related infrastructure, it is argued that as a result of British Government inaction the more peripheral UK regions are likely to be unable to maximise any potential benefits created. Nonetheless, the overall regional economic impact of the Tunnel will depend ultimately on the reactions of the business community (Pieda 1989a&b).
