Fact Sheet / The Parade Page 1 of 3 The Parade (Parada) Directed by Srdjan Dragojević Serbo-Croatian, with subtitles in English Serbia, 2011, 115 minutes STORY Logline: In exchange for some wedding-planning expertise, a macho Serbian crime boss recruits a ragtag group of Balkan war-buddies to provide protection for a Pride march in this rollicking yet poignant comedy inspired by real events. Short Synopsis: A group of gay activists in Belgrade strikes a tense alliance with Limun, a Serbian crime boss, whose fiancée demands an extravagant wedding that only struggling gay theater director Mirko and his friends can provide. In exchange, macho Limun reluctantly agrees to provide security for the group’s Pride parade. It’s a tall order: previous attempts to march met with mass violence from right-wing skinheads. When Limun’s gang balks at the assignment, he recruits a band of former Balkan war combatants, now dear friends, who will stand up to the aggressors Seven Samurai style, in this rollickingly shrewd and humane comedic take on a vital human rights issue. ABOUT THE FILM: THE PARADE REVIEWS “Srdjan Dragojević directs with a good deal of intelligence, and is very much aware that his unsubtle characters offer an entertaining look at the culture clash between brutal Balkan machismo and a gay community that suffers violent attacks with little support or assistance from the authorities.” – Screen Daily “In addition to gay rights, the film affirms the future of the regions states as mutually respecting, tolerant societies, united not by class consciousness or ethnic blood rivalries but by liberal values.” – Boston Review FESTIVALS AND AWARDS Vilnius International Film Festival KINO PAVASARIS Da Sodoma a Hollywood, Torino GLBT Film Festival Cannes Marché du Film Transilvania International Film Festival Sydney Film Festival Jerusalem International Film Festival Galway Film Fleadh Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) Montreal World Film Festival Helsinki International Film Festival “Love and Anarchy” Festroia International Film Festival Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival Rome MedFilm Festival 145 Ninth Street Suite 105 [email protected] San Francisco CA 94103 www.globalfilm.org Fact Sheet / The Parade Page 3 of 3 Seville European Film Festival Duhok International Film Festival U.S. & CANADIAN DISTRIBUTOR: THE GLOBAL FILM INITIATIVE The Parade is part the Global Lens film series and can be seen through public screenings of Global Lens 2013 at participating venues across the United States and Canada.
