Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart set many works to Metastasio texts near the beginning of his career, but Metastasio was nearing the end of his long life, and his style soon became associated with the overly florid musical line of singers from the previous generation. This program explores Metastasio's influence through the lens of a succession of musical icons: Nicola Porpora, who taught and mentored the young Joseph Haydn, who in turn mentored several Reginald L. Mobley, countertenor generations of young composers, including the rising Aaron Westman, Natalie Carducci, and Anna Washburn, star, Mozart. Metastasio lived for most of his long life violin and viola with the family of another such student of Haydn’s, William Skeen, violoncello the remarkable composer Marianna Martines, whose Henry Lebedinsky, harpsichord cantata “Berenice, a che fai!” is featured. The program also includes music written by Mozart’s Available for 2018-19 and 2019-2020 seasons friend and one of the 18th century’s most successful operatic composers, Josef Mysliveček, and arranged by Mozart, himself. Acclaimed countertenor Reginald L. Mobley and the “energized, free-spirited Program Porpora: Sinfonia in C major, Op. 2, no. 2 group” (-Early Music America) Agave Baroque, from California, USA, round out the program with Porpora: "Son fra l'onde in mezzo al mare" from Gli orti Esperidi chamber music and arias of Mozart.
