Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart set many works to Metastasio texts near the beginning of his career, but Metastasio was nearing the end of his long life, and his style soon became associated with the overly florid musical line of singers from the previous generation. This program explores Metastasio's influence through the lens of a succession of musical icons: Nicola Porpora, who taught and mentored the young Joseph Haydn, who in turn mentored several Reginald L. Mobley, countertenor generations of young composers, including the rising Aaron Westman, Natalie Carducci, and Anna Washburn, star, Mozart. Metastasio lived for most of his long life violin and viola with the family of another such student of Haydn’s, William Skeen, violoncello the remarkable composer Marianna Martines, whose Henry Lebedinsky, harpsichord cantata “Berenice, a che fai!” is featured. The program also includes music written by Mozart’s Available for 2018-19 and 2019-2020 seasons friend and one of the 18th century’s most successful operatic composers, Josef Mysliveček, and arranged by Mozart, himself. Acclaimed countertenor Reginald L. Mobley and the “energized, free-spirited Program Porpora: Sinfonia in C major, Op. 2, no. 2 group” (-Early Music America) Agave Baroque, from California, USA, round out the program with Porpora: "Son fra l'onde in mezzo al mare" from Gli orti Esperidi chamber music and arias of Mozart. Das Ende der napoleonischen Kriege und der Wiener Kongress stehen diesmal in der Sprache des Bruders der Komponistin.

Resident diplomats, in addition to being patrons and performers, often acted as musical agents, facilitating musical interactions within and between courts, among individuals and firms, and in their private salons. Through these varied activities, they played a vital role in shaping a transnational European musical culture.

Der weitgereiste Musikgelehrte traf sie im Salon des Hofdichters Metastasio, berichtete über sie in seinem Tagebuch einer musikalischen Reise und nannte sie nicht nur die „vollkommenste Sängerin […], die ich jemals gehört hatte“, sondern rühmte auch ihre „meisterhafte Art“ am Cembalo und ließ sich Eigenkompositionen von ihr vorspielen: „Sie übertraf wirklich noch die Erwartung, die man mir von ihr beigebracht hatte. Sie sang zwo Arien von ihrer eignen Komposition über Worte von Metastasio, wozu sie sich selbst auf dem Flügel akkompagnierte, und zwar auf eine wohlverstandne, meisterhafte Manier; und aus der Art, wie sie die Ritornelle spielte, konnte ich urteilen, dass sie sehr fertige Finger hätte.“ Im Jahr darauf wurde Marianna Martines als erste Frau in die prestigeträchtige Accademia Filarmonica in Bologna aufgenommen.

Practically everybody knows at least some of Tchaikovsky's music. The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, the violin concerto and the first piano concerto, and good grief, the 1812 Overture! Lord have mercy! And indeed all of these are wonderful pieces, maybe even the 1812. More on that later. Indeed over the years Tchaikovsky's music seems to have suffered something of a fall from grace, possibly as a result of overexposure. One hundred or so years ago it was held in the highest esteem, and enjoyed overwhelming popularity. Some of the "tunes" became almost musical clichés, and perhaps that is part of the problem.

Eine so illustrere Lehrerschar konnte kaum jemand anders in Wien aufweisen als Marianna Martines. Sie hatte das Glück, dass ihr musikalisches Talent früh entdeckt wurde und dass sie besonders von Metastasio gefördert wurde. Dieser war seit Jugend mit Mariannas Vater befreundet und so teilten sich Metastasio und die Familie Martines in Wien ein Haus, in dem auch Nicola Porpora und Joseph Haydn zwischenzeitlich lebten. Seit ihrem zehnten Lebensjahr hatte Marianna Martines bei Haydn Cembalounterricht und erlernte Gesang bei Porpora, der damals der erfolgreichste Gesangslehrer Europas war. Mit siebzehn Jahren wurde ihre erste Komposition – eine Messe – öffentlich aufgeführt. Kaiserin Maria Theresia ließ sie oft an den Hof rufen, um sich an ihrer Musik zu erfreuen. Auch Joseph II. schätzte ihre Konzerte sehr und pflegte ihr dabei die Noten umzublättern, wie Zeitgenossen berichten. Obwohl sie als Frau damals ihre Kompositionen und ihr Talent nicht in dem Maße vermarkten konnte wie ihre männlichen Kollegen, breitete sich dennoch ihr Ruhm bald in ganz Europa aus. Man schätzte ihre der neapolitanischen Schule nahestehenden Werke sehr, weshalb sie als erste Frau in die Accademia Filarmonica von Bologna aufgenommen wurde. Diese Ehre führte dazu, dass einige ihrer Werke von Bibliotheken in ganz Europa angekauft wurden, die dadurch zum Erhalt ihrer Kompositionen beitrugen. Dennoch gelten viele ihrer Cembalowerke als verschollen, was die Erforschung ihres Oeuvres bisher erschwert hat.

Marianna Martines and the Overture in C Major
iii Preface Marianna Martines ( 1744-1812) Marianna Martines, born May 4, 1744 in Vienna, was a composer, harpsichordist and pianist, singer, and teacher. Although christened Anna Katharina, she was called Marianna. She was the daughter of Nicolo and Marla Theresia de Martines, who were of Spanish descent. Many biographical sources spell her last name with "ez" and use the German "von" (equivalent of "de"); however, her letters and autograph scores use the "es" spelling and omit the "von" or "de" designation. Her early education was supervised by Pietro Metastasio, court poet to Kaiser Karl VI and a librettist known for his contributions to Italian opera, who lived with the Martines family until his death in 1782. It was through Metastasio's connections that Martines received the best musical instruction: voice with Nicola Porpora, influential teacher of Italian operatic style; keyboard and composition with twenty-two year old Franz Joseph Haydn, who lived in an attic apartment in the same building as Martines; counterpoint with Giuseppe Bonno; and additional composition lessons with Johann Hasse. Martines was elected to the Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna in 177 3 and later founded a very successful singing school. She held weekly musical parties in her home, which attracted the most notable artists in Vienna. At some of these parties, she and Wolfgang Mozart performed works for four-hand piano. Martines died of tuberculosis on December 13, 1812. Sinfonia in C Major Sinfonia in C Major was composed in 1770 when Martines was 24. An autographed score exists in the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. In addition to the score, there are individual string parts in a different hand, perhaps a copyist.
