One recommended way to determine the composition and quantity of fumes and • gases to which workers are exposed is to take an air sample in the workers' breathing zone. See ANSI/AWS Fl.l available from the American Welding Society, P. 0. Box 351040, Miami, FL 33135. SPECIFIC HEALTH HAZARDS OF CHEMICALS Ammonium Chloride - Prolonged breathing of fumes may cause irritation of respiratory passages. Hydrogen Chloride - Causes eye and skin burns. Ingestion causes severe burns of mouth, esophagus and stomach. Vapor extremely irritating.

Methanol - Ingestion may cause blindness; 100-250 ml may be fatal. Symptoms of overexposure include dizziness, visual impairment, nausea, respiratory failure, muscular incoordination and narcosis. Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis, erythmea, scaling, and possibly systemic effects.

Petrolatum - May cause skin irritation upon continual use.

Zinc Chloride - Fume or dust can cause dermatitis, and conjunctivitis. May cause rashes, boils, corneal burn, epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, shock (internal). ^ Potassium Chloride - Dust may be irritating to the mucous membranes. Sodium Chloride - 40-60 grams intake of NaCL daily will elevate blood pressure. Lithium Chloride - May be irritating to eyes and slightly irritating to skin, nose and throat.

Ipopropyl Alcohol - May be irritating to skin, eyes and mucous membranes.

Ammonium Fluoborate - Chronic fluoride absorption can result in osseous fluorosis, increased radiographic density of the bones and mottling of the teeth.

Aminoethylethanolamine - If inhaled, can cause irritation to the respiratory system.

Triethanolamine - If inhaled, can cause irritation to the respiratory system.

Tin - Tin fume may cause metal fume fever, characterized by fever, body ache, and chills. Zinc - Zinc fume may causemetal fume fever, characterized by fever, body ache, and chills. Zinc fume may also be an irritant to the skin and eyes. Zinc Oxide - Causes skin and eye burns. Harmful if inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Chronic effects are coughing, CNS effects, erythmea, and nausea.

Adipic Acid - May cause dermatitis, chemical burns, irritation to the respiratory system, or if swallowed, chemical burns to the digestive system.

Dimethylformamide - May cause liver or skin damage. It may also result in systemic toxicity. Chronic effects are liver, kidney, bone marrow effects, andCNS effects. SECTION 3 - PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL DATA

STAY-CLEAN LIQUID AND PASTEFLUX AND STAY-CLEAN HI-TEMP LIQUID FLUX Flux is stable material in closed containers at room temperature under normal storage and handling conditions. This material can be considered a weak acid. It canbe mildly corrosive to some metals, especially when hot. Incompatible with cyanides; may release HC1 gas when mixed with Zinc Chloride. If combined with sulfides, the liquid flux may release H2S gas.

STAY-CLEAN ALUMINUM AND ROSIN FLUX Stable, avoid heat, sparks, open flame. _ Incompatibility - Avoid concentrated acids and oxidizers. Hazardous polymerization - will not occur. Hazardous decomposition products - carbon monoxide and/or dioxide.

SECTION 7 - SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

Contain spill, absorb, sweep-up, dispose, flush area with water to chemical sewer. Dispose of in accordance with all federal, state, andlocal regulations.

SECTION 8 AND 9 - SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION AND PRECAUTIONS

Read and understand the manufacturer's instructions andthe precautionary label on the product. See"American National Standard Z49.1, Safety in Welding anr~% Cutting published by the American Welding Society, PO Box 351040, Miami, FL 33135 and OSHA Publication 2206 (29CFR1910), U. S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402 for moredetails on many of the following.

VENTILATION - Use enough ventilation to keep the fumes and gases below TLV's in theworkers' breathing zone and the general area. Train the employee to keep his head out of the fumes. See ANSI/ASC Z49.1 Section 5.

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION - Use respirable fume respirator or air supplied respirator when brazing in confined space or where local exhaust or ventilation does not keep exposure below TLV. EYE PROTECTION - Wear safety glasses, goggles or use face shield with filter lensof appropriate shade number (see ANSI/ASC Z49.1-Section 4.2). Provide protection-screens and flash goggles, if necessary,to shield others. Wear face shield if splashing is probable.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING - Wear head and body protection which help to prevent injury from splashing, sparks, and flame. See ANSI Z49.1. At a minimum this includes gloves and a protective face shield, and may include arm protectors, aprons, hats,- shoulder protection, as well as dark substantial clothing.
