Associate Director/Planning and Administration Search Committee Convened: The Associate Director/Planning and Administration search committee met on June 30 to discuss Director Carol Diedrichs’ charge and the next step in the search process. The committee is reviewing materials from the pool of applicants and expects to make recommendations to Carol by mid-July.

Additional Appointment to Combined ADs Search Committee: Judy Cerqua has been added to the Combined Search Committee for the three associate director positions currently being recruited. In announcing the appointment, Libraries Director Carol Diedrichs said Judy’s addition to the committee would provide representation for the Libraries’ CCS staff. Carol said that she had not been aware when the earlier appointments were made that there were no CCS staff included. Updates on the work of the committees will be included in future issues of NewsNotes.

Executive Committee Notes: Executive Committee did not meet this week. The next meeting will be July 6.

2 Summer Workshops in Special Collections and Archives:

 “What’s New: Recent Additions to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum’s Collections,” Lucy Caswell, Curator, Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, Wednesday, July 14, 3-4:30 p.m., 023L Wexner [seminar room adjacent to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum’s lower level entrance] This workshop will acquaint participants with the resources available in the Cartoon Library, especially those which might be of interest to generalists and undergraduates. Lucy Shelton Caswell, the founding curator, will provide a brief overview of the unit’s development since it was established in 1977, as well as a look at plans for its future in the renovated Sullivant Hall. She will provide a demonstration of the library’s Web- based resources, including the Opper Project. Workshop participants will then move to the library’s reading room for a gallery talk about “What’s New: Recent Additions to the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum’s Collections.”

 “Sharing Library Collections through Digitization,”Amy McCrory, Digital Imaging Specialist, OSUL Preservation Department / Digital Imaging Division, Tuesday, July 20, 3-4:30 p.m., Ackerman Tech Center, Room 5826: This workshop will focus on how digitization supports the traditional work of librarians, as well as opening up new opportunities. Examples from digitization projects done in OSU Libraries will be given, with discussion of how these support teaching, learning, research, and the sharing of our library’s unique collections.

Curt Bonk, a well-known authority on emerging technologies for learning, spoke to an audience of 120 at a June 29 program at the Thompson Library. Bonk led a second presentation on the heroes, gurus, and revolutionaries of the shared internet.

The programs were jointly sponsored by OSUL and Franklin University. Bonk was offering three additional programs at Franklin on June 30.

4 CMS Training Schedule for Summer Quarter: Please use our sign up form to register for Content Management System training sessions. Registration is required for ALL classes. Space is limited to 14 participants per session.

 Introduction to the CMS: covers how to use the CMS to create pages and a short portion on the navigational structure. Each session includes significant hands-on practice time. This class is REQUIRED in order to create pages using the CMS. Located in Thompson 149. o Wednesday, July 21, 10am-12pm o Thursday, August 12, 10am -12pm

 Carmen Library Link and Subject Pages: covers the Carmen Library Link (CLL) editor and the connection from that system to the CMS for the creation of Subject pages using Carmen Library Link widgets. This session will also cover the changes to the CLL editor, so even those using it for a while are encouraged to attend. Located in SEL 390 o Wednesday, July 21, 2-4pm o Thursday, July 29, 10am-12pm

 Open Lab: Come with your questions and/or work with helpers standing by, it’s up to you. If you have a particular , please share it on the registration form so we can be prepared to answer it. Digital Storytelling Sessions Generate 12 Stories: Libraries Director Carol Diedrichs took time to enjoy the 12 stories created by Libraries’ staff participating in the Digital Storytelling Workshop held in June. The leaders of the sessions—Karen Diaz, Nancy Courtney and Anne Fields, with help from Cindy Gray from the Digital Union— congratulated the participants for their hard work, creativity, and perseverance on getting their stories told. Plans are being made for an appropriate forum in which to share the stories with our colleagues in the libraries.

Participants were Kevlin Haire, Michelle Drobik, Melanie McGurr, Beth Black, Lisa Iacobellis, Henry Griffy, Maureen Walsh, Beth Kattelman, Danny Dotson, Maureen Donovan, Miriam Conteh- Morgan, Pam McClung, Tschera Connell and Corey Riley (student at Music & Dance Library).

Carol Diedrichs has been elected as a Delegate to the OCLC Global Council. The Global Council’s recommendations shape specific and encompassing OCLC policies and services, from operational details (such as pricing strategies and contribution requirements) to service enhancement issues (including policy on content-enriched monograph and serials table of contents records). Carol’s three-year term on the Council begins July 1, 2010.

Maureen Donovan has been selected to facilitate the Mid-Career & Senior Faculty Program of The Ohio State Teaching Enhancement Programs. The program was designed to provide tenured faculty with the opportunity to reflect on their teaching, explore new ideas, meet regularly with a group of peers, and implement changes. As part of this program, Maureen will develop and implement a personalized teaching enhancement plan, and will receive a $1,000 professional development grant.

Sandra Howe, Facilities Services Assistant, has been hired into the position on a permanent basis. Sandra was initially hired into the job when it was a six-month temporary position. The Facilities Services Assistant position was recently made permanent.

A thank you: My family and I would like to express our appreciation for the notes and flowers following the recent death of my father. The flowers were just beautiful.
