This material has been redesigned and much of it is accompanied by different illustrations than when it first appeared. Some material is from Roy Thomas’s personal archives. Some was created especially for this book. Approximately one-third of the material in the SLU was found by Danny Fingeroth in June 2010 at the Stan Lee Collection (aka “ The Stan Lee Archives ”) of the American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, and is material that has rarely, if ever, been seen by the general public. The transcriptions—done especially for this book—of audiotapes of 1960s radio programs featuring Stan with other notable personalities, should be of special interest to fans and scholars alike. We will raise public awareness regarding the rise and importance of graphic literature, sequential art, and comics as a literary medium through a one-day comic book convention in honor of Will Eisner. The Will Eisner Memorial Comic Book Convention will feature displays on the history of graphic novels, the educational benefits of the medium, children’s activities, lectures, an illustrator alley and a sequential art workshop taught by Jackie Crofts (illustrator of the comic Nutmeg). Project Narrative A. Organizational Background The Avon-Washington Township Public Library in Avon, Indiana strives to provide open access to resources, services and professional expertise to over 44,000 patrons. Our library provides resources and services for education and personal development as well as recreation and leisure. B. Statement of Need Our community here in the town of Avon is young and diverse. Within Avon there are over 72 spoken languages and the median age of an Avon resident is 35 years.1 This is the average age of many of today’s comic book readers2, although the reading of sequential narratives is still intergenerational. -

Canadian Magazine Illustrators at Home and in the United States, 1880-1960 by Shannon Jaleen Grove Doctor of Philosophy in Art History and Criticism Stony Brook University 2014 This dissertation analyzes nationalisms in the work of Canadian magazine illustrators in Toronto and New York, 1880 to 1960. Using a continentalist approach—rather than the nationalist lens often employed by historians of Canadian art—I show the existence of an integrated, joint North American visual culture. Drawing from primary sources and biography, I document the social, political, corporate, and communication networks that illustrators traded in. I focus on two common visual tropes of the day—that of the pretty girl and that of wilderness imagery. -

This comes with a magnificent account of the year’s exhibitions in Stockbridge and across the nation, educational and community programs, scholarship to advance illustration art, and curatorial achievements. This remarkable Museum does all of this and more, inspired by the values Norman Rockwell depicted in his iconic paintings. His works portray freedom, tolerance, humanity and kindness, integrity, honesty, and authenticity along with a joyfulness and celebration of life. These values inspire our visitors and staff alike. The Museum concluded its fiscal year on June 30, 2012 in a strong position. As noted a year ago, we eliminated our long-term debt. This year we are pleased to report that we have no short-term Norman Rockwell Museum President Anne Morgan borrowing on our balance sheet. Annual attendance at the Museum has generated good revenue, and and Chairman Thomas we saw nationwide interest and attendance grow for our traveling exhibition program as well. L. Pulling. We are especially grateful for the generosity of our members and donors who care so deeply for this national treasure in the Berkshires. -

A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF COMIC-CON THE GOLDEN AGE OF COMIC-CON The 1970s were the formative years of Comic-Con. After finding its home in the El Cortez Hotel in downtown San Diego, the event continued to grow and prosper and build a national following. The basement of the U.S. Grant Hotel, Downtown San Diego Attendance: 100+ Officially known as “San Diego’s Golden State Comic-Minicon” (the hyphen in Minicon comes and goes), this one-day event was held in March to raise funds for the big show in August, and FORREST J ACKERMAN was actually the first-ever West Coast comic convention. Most Comic-Con’s first-ever guest was the popular editor of Famous of those on the organizing com- Monsters of Filmland, the favorite mittee were teenagers, with the movie magazine of many of the major exceptions of Shel Dorf (a fans of that era. He paid his own recent transplant from Detroit way and returned to Comic-Con who had organized the Triple numerous times over the years.
