I deeply thank my supervisor, Professor Heitor Capuzzo; my cosupervisor, Giannalberto Bendazzi; and Professor Vibeke Sorensen, chair of the School of Art, Design and Media at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore for showing sincere compassion and offering unwavering moral support during a personally difficult stage of this Ph.D. I am also grateful for all their suggestions, critiques and observations that guided me in this research project, as well as their dedication and patience. • 2017 Abstracts
Abstracts for the Annual SECAC Meeting in Columbus, Ohio October 25th-28th, 2017 Conference Chair, Aaron Petten, Columbus College of Art & Design Emma Abercrombie, SCAD Savannah The Millennial and the Millennial Female: Amalia Ulman and ORLAN This paper focuses on Amalia Ulman’s digital performance Excellences and Perfections and places it within the theoretical framework of ORLAN’s surgical performance series The Reincarnation of Saint Orlan. Ulman’s performance occurred over a twenty-one week period on the artist’s Instagram page. She posted a total of 184 photographs over twenty-one weeks. When viewed in their entirety and in relation to one another, the photographs reveal a narrative that can be separated into three distinct episodes in which Ulman performs three different female Instagram archetypes through the use of selfies and common Instagram image tropes. This paper pushes beyond the casual connection that has been suggested, but not explored, by art historians between the two artists and takes the comparison to task. Issues of postmodern identity are explored as they relate to the Internet culture of the 1990s when ORLAN began her surgery series and within the digital landscape of the Web 2.0 age that Ulman works in, where Instagram is the site of her performance and the selfie is a medium of choice. Abercrombie situates Ulman’s “image-body” performance within the critical framework of feminist performance practice, using the postmodern performance of ORLAN as a point of departure. J. Bradley Adams, Berry College Controlled Nature Focused on gardens, Adams’s work takes a range of forms and operates on different scales.

At the same time, we explore the works of artists who did not retain the renown they enjoyed during their lifetimes and who fell into obscurity. But obscurity is not necessarily forever, and as cycles of taste have changed, these once-forgotten artists and their largely unknown works have re-surfaced to startle us today.

SCMS 2011 MEDIA CITIZENSHIP • Conference Program and Screening Synopses The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans • March 10–13, 2011 • SCMS 2011 Letter from the President Welcome to New Orleans and the fabulous Ritz-Carlton Hotel! On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our members, professional staff, and volunteers who have put enormous time and energy into making this conference a reality. This is my final conference as SCMS President, a position I have held for the past four years. Prior to my presidency, I served two years as President-Elect, and before that, three years as Treasurer. As I look forward to my new role as Past-President, I have begun to reflect on my near decade-long involvement with the administration of the Society. Needless to say, these years have been challenging, inspiring, and expansive. We have traveled to and met in numerous cities, including Atlanta, London, Minneapolis, Vancouver, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. We celebrated our 50th anniversary as a scholarly association. We planned but unfortunately were unable to hold our 2009 conference at Josai University in Tokyo. We mourned the untimely death of our colleague and President-Elect Anne Friedberg while honoring her distinguished contributions to our field. We planned, developed, and launched our new website and have undertaken an ambitious and wide-ranging strategic planning process so as to better position SCMS to serve its members and our discipline today and in the future. At one of our first strategic planning sessions, Justin Wyatt, our gifted and hardworking consultant, asked me to explain to the Board why I had become involved with the work of the Society in the first place.

  • Celebrating Andrew Wyeth the American Artist’S Centennial Is Being Honored with Two Major Retrospectives of His Work
along the way Celebrating Andrew Wyeth The American artist’s centennial is being honored with two major retrospectives of his work. Andrew Wyeth may have been a favorite of U.S. presidents. In 1963, he became the first painter to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom when John F. Kennedy bestowed the honor. Richard Nixon once sponsored a White House exhibition of works by the Pennsylvania- and Maine- based artist, and both Bushes honored Wyeth, with the Congressional Gold Medal in 1990 and the National Medal of the Arts in 2007. At the other end of the spectrum, comic- strip character Snoopy owned a Wyeth that he displayed prominently in his doghouse. In between, the artist was alternately lauded and dismissed by critics but remained a perennial commercial favorite. This year marks the centennial of Wyeth’s birth, and two major museum retrospectives have been assembled NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF ART, RALEIGH ART, OF MUSEUM CAROLINA NORTH ©ANDREW WYETH/ARTISTS RIGHTS SOCIETY (ARS), RIGHTS WYETH/ARTISTS ©ANDREW for the occasion.
