THAT LIBERTY SHALL NOT PERISH: AMERICAN PROPAGANDA AND THE POLITICS OF FEAR, 1914-1919 by ZACHARY CHARLES SMITH (Under the Direction of John H. Morrow, Jr.) ABSTRACT This dissertation attempts to provide an understanding of the widespread anxiety, vigilantism, suppression of dissent, and violation of civil liberties that took place in the United States from 1917 to 1919 and argues that it can be found in some Americans‟ understanding of and reaction to racially-charged propaganda. As the United States inched toward war with Germany in 1915 and after declaring war in April 1917, many propagandists began referencing the allegedly inherent characteristics of Germans as evidence of German American disloyalty and the existence of a vast “Pan-German” plot to undercut or even destroy American democracy. The imagined conspiracy grew to encompass most of the fears that had plagued the Anglo Saxon middle-class since the 1870s – immigrant radicalism, race suicide, the capability of “racially inferior” immigrants to assimilate and self-govern, and the continued deference of African Americans. To many anxious Americans, Germany and German Americans became a very real entity to which these long-held fears could be transferred. American propaganda produced during the First World War, though, was not a cynical ploy to fool the American people into supporting intervention on the side of the Allies. Leading Americans – politicians, editors, and social elites – were convinced that a global German conspiracy threatened the security of the United States and hoped to enlist the American people in staving off the existential threat they believed racially degenerate Germany allegedly posed. -

An illustrator for various magazines including St. Nicholas Magazine, Judge and Life, Flagg's portrait paintings were exhibited at the Paris Salon and the National Academy of Design. He prepared patriotic posters during both World Wars. His writings include the books: Yankee Girls Abroad, Why They Married, City People and the autobiographical H Roses and Buckshot. Flagg died on May 27, 1960. || Flagg's poster is one of many varied items in the So- M ciety's latest gallery and corridor exhibition entitled, "Con- [§] flict: Men, Events and Artists." The exhibition is in homage to American women of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the illustrators who accurately portrayed the quintessential yet distinctly American feminine beauty that these women embodied. The American illustrators highlighted include Charles Dana Gibson, Harrison Fisher, and others of the greatest illustrators of the period, such as: Philip Boileau, MacClelland Barclay, Howard Chandler Christy, James Montgomery Flagg, Henry Hutt, Walter Granville Smith, Paul Stahr, and Albert Beck Wenzell. Each of these illustrators created their own prototypical image of ‘The American Woman.’ The public gave these illustrators’ artworks generic names as part of their respective oeuvre; The Gibson Girl and The Fisher Girl stand out as the most popular of all. These renditions of the illustrators’ ideal woman captured the increasingly independent spirit of American women. The illustrations both shaped and reflected American society and its notions of female beauty. Compared to women of previous eras, these women relished more freedoms, enjoyed greater opportunities in sports and education, and were at the vanguard of a time when women effected change through social and political movements on an unprecedented scale in Western culture. In fact, they promote elements of early American life such as racism, misogyny and anti-radicalism, and make negative statements about the aspects of society that did not conform to conservative White Anglo-Saxon Protestantism. [j Acknowledgements First of all, I would like to thank my thesis advisors, Professors Anita Chari, Alison Gash, and Casey Shoop. Professor Chari is a wonderful instructor, whose class on radical political theory motivated me to continually think critically about the world. Professor Gash teaches in a captivating way that drove me to question the status quo from a legal perspective. Forum Gallery Opens a Group Exhibition of American Social Realism
The First Art Newspaper on the Net Established in 1996 Wednesday, May 26, 2021 Forum Gallery opens a group exhibition of American social realism Isabel Bishop, Manhattan Street, 1929. Oil on canvas, 10 x 12 1/4 inches. NEW YORK, NY.- Forum Gallery is presenting a group exhibition of American social realism featuring paintings, drawings, and sculpture dating from the first half of the Twentieth Century to today. Artists working in the years between the world wars and well known for their contributions are shown side by side with contemporary American Artists whose work continues the humanist legacy of social realism. American social realism took shape in the 1920s in the centers of commerce also home to artistic communities, like New York and Chicago. The cultural shift in the United States seen in the art of the social realists bridges the high modernist ideals of Europe and the struggle and very human drama evoked by the Great Depression and the political upheavals of the 1920s and 30s. Works in the current exhibition reflect and record the Nation’s fragile optimism of this time period. Highly emotional figuration, strong political content, and frank depiction of the common activities of daily life characterize the art of the social realists, demonstrated in this exhibition by masterworks in oil by Raphael Soyer, In The City Park, c. 1934, and Jack Levine, 1932 (In Memory of George Grosz), painted in 1959. The earliest paintings on view, dating from the 1920s, by Isabel Bishop and James H. Daugherty are joined by evocative works in oil by Philip Evergood, Wood Gaylor, William Gropper, Robert Gwathmey, Joseph Hirsch, Reginald Marsh, and Ben Shahn.
