Name _____________________________ Class _________________ Date __________________ Life at the Turn of the 20th Century Biography Thomas Nast 1840–1902 WHY HE MADE HISTORY Thomas Nast has been called the father of modern American political cartooning. He is best known for his cartoons exposing the corruption of Boss Tweed’s political machine. As you read the biography below, think about how Thomas Nast influenced public opinion. How did he use images to communicate? CORBIS © By the late 1800s the governments of most major cities were run by political machines. These informal groups of professional politicians controlled local government. Often these politicians were corrupt and abused the public trust. Thomas Nast, a political cartoonist, exposed the corruption of one of the biggest political machines of his day. His drawings led to the downfall of Boss Tweed’s Tammany Hall political machine. Thomas Nast was born in Germany in 1840, the son of a musician. His family immigrated to the U.S. and settled in New York City when he was six years old. Nast studied art at the National Academy of Design. At the age of 15, he was hired as a staff artist for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper. By the time he was 18, Nast was a freelance artist for Harper’s Weekly and the New York Illustrated News. In 1862 Harper’s Weekly hired Nast to draw images of the Civil War. His editors hoped he would draw realistic battle scenes. Instead, Nast drew images that supported the Union and opposed slavery. Nast distorted and exaggerated the physical traits of his subjects to convey strong social and political messages. -

An illustrator for various magazines including St. Nicholas Magazine, Judge and Life, Flagg's portrait paintings were exhibited at the Paris Salon and the National Academy of Design. He prepared patriotic posters during both World Wars. His writings include the books: Yankee Girls Abroad, Why They Married, City People and the autobiographical H Roses and Buckshot. Flagg died on May 27, 1960. || Flagg's poster is one of many varied items in the So- M ciety's latest gallery and corridor exhibition entitled, "Con- [§] flict: Men, Events and Artists." New Exhibition the American Muse Debuts at the Nmai

The exhibition is in homage to American women of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the illustrators who accurately portrayed the quintessential yet distinctly American feminine beauty that these women embodied. The American illustrators highlighted include Charles Dana Gibson, Harrison Fisher, and others of the greatest illustrators of the period, such as: Philip Boileau, MacClelland Barclay, Howard Chandler Christy, James Montgomery Flagg, Henry Hutt, Walter Granville Smith, Paul Stahr, and Albert Beck Wenzell. Each of these illustrators created their own prototypical image of ‘The American Woman.’ The public gave these illustrators’ artworks generic names as part of their respective oeuvre; The Gibson Girl and The Fisher Girl stand out as the most popular of all. These renditions of the illustrators’ ideal woman captured the increasingly independent spirit of American women. The illustrations both shaped and reflected American society and its notions of female beauty. Compared to women of previous eras, these women relished more freedoms, enjoyed greater opportunities in sports and education, and were at the vanguard of a time when women effected change through social and political movements on an unprecedented scale in Western culture. Also showing at the NMAI are Maxfield Parrish: The Retrospective, which has been extended due to popular demand through Fall 2013, and Howard Pyle & His Brandywine Students, showcasing the works of Howard Pyle, N.C. -

CHAPTER 8 Bohemians Greenwich Village and The Masses Joanna Levin Ever since Rodolphe, Henri Murger's prototypical struggling writer, stood before the grave of Mimi, his lost love and partner in the romance of bohemia, crying, "Oh my youth, it is you that is being buried," la vie boheme has represented a fabled transitional period between youth and mature adulthood in many an individual life, memoir, and Bildungsroman (Seigel 45). Similarly, ever since its inception in the wake of the 1830 Rev olution in France, bohemianism - as a larger subcultural movement has flourished during periods of historical transition. It was in the tumultuous lead-up to the Civil War that la vie boheme first took root in the United States (in a basement beer hall beneath the sidewalks of Broadway and Bleecker and on the pages of the New York Saturday Press), but it was dur ing the 1910s, the decade known for ushering in a host of radical and mod ernist movements, that bohemia assumed its most famous American form in New York City's Greenwich Village. -

The Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division collection of Thomas Nast images is the largest online resource for Nast’s work and related materials. This archive was invaluable in providing high resolution primary source illustrations for all sections of our exhibit. It also includes some contemporary cartoons inspired by Nast’s work. Thomas Nast Papers. Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. The Nast material available at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum Reading Room includes all of Nast’s Harper’s Weekly illustrations from 1871, the height of the campaign against the Tweed Ring, as well as contemporary takes on his work such as a play on “Who Stole the People’s Money?” created by Jim Borgman during the Carter Administration. Thomas Nast Papers, 1860-1902. Gilded Age Collection, Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, Fremont, Ohio. This collection includes correspondence, photographs, personal journals from Nast’s travel in Europe, the Nast family scrapbook of newspaper clippings, and published works from various magazines as well as numerous original sketches. Of particular interest were the sketches in which Nast seemed to be developing ideas for famous cartoons such as “The ‘Brains.’” Books: Paine, Albert Bigelow. Thomas Nast, His Period and His Pictures. 1904. Broomall: Chelsea, 1997. Print. Paine’s biography, based on interviews with Nast and originally published shortly after Nast’s death, is an essential resource. It provided a wealth of information about Nast’s life and work as well as a number of useful quotes illustrating Nast’s influence and legacy. -

ROTHER ABSTRACT Like Britain and continental Europe, the United States would utilize the poster to garner both funding and public support during World War I. While war has historically been considered a masculine endeavor, a relatively large number of these posters depict the female form. Although the use of women in American World War I visual propaganda may not initially seem problematic, upon further inspection it becomes clear that her presence often served to promote racial and national pretentiousness. Based on the works of popular pre-war illustrators like Howard Chandler Christy and Charles Dana Gibson, the American woman was the most attractive woman in the in the world. Her outstanding wit, beauty and intelligence made her the only suitable mate for the supposed racially superior American man. With the onset of war, however, the once entertaining romantic scenarios in popular monthlies and weeklies now represented what America stood to lose, and the “American Girl” would make the transition from magazine illustrations to war poster with minimal alterations. -

This year’s theme is “Be a Star in Someone’s Life.” The “Kick-Off” is the launching point of the campaign, designed to motivate staff members to begin thinking about contributing to their favorite organizations, or to consider new charities that reach out and help others. A Navy Color Guard will open the event with pomp and presentation of the colors in a glitzy Hollywood setting, in keeping with the “be-a-star” theme. The Library has invited as a motivational speaker Tom Morris Jr., a segment producer for “America’s Most Wanted,” a FOX television network crime show. With a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Norfolk State University (1980), Morris has worked as a print and broadcast journalist, a communications strategist for the Prince Georges County Economic Development Corporation, and as an antiterrorist security specialist for an Embassy Task Group. The Librarian of Congress, who serves as the campaign chairman, has appointed Bill Ayers, special assistant to the Exhibition “Cartoon director of Human Resources Services, as this year’s vice- chairman and director of the overall campaign.
