  • New Exhibition the American Muse Debuts at the Nmai
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 2, 2013 Contact: Eric Brocklehurst Tel: (401) 851-8949 ext. 18 Email: [email protected] Website: www.americanillustration.org NEW EXHIBITION ‘THE AMERICAN MUSE’ DEBUTS AT THE NMAI NEWPORT, RI- Friday, May 24, the NMAI officially debuts its new exhibition, The American Muse. The exhibition is in homage to American women of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and the illustrators who accurately portrayed the quintessential yet distinctly American feminine beauty that these women embodied. The American illustrators highlighted include Charles Dana Gibson, Harrison Fisher, and others of the greatest illustrators of the period, such as: Philip Boileau, MacClelland Barclay, Howard Chandler Christy, James Montgomery Flagg, Henry Hutt, Walter Granville Smith, Paul Stahr, and Albert Beck Wenzell. Each of these illustrators created their own prototypical image of ‘The American Woman.’ The public gave these illustrators’ artworks generic names as part of their respective oeuvre; The Gibson Girl and The Fisher Girl stand out as the most popular of all. These renditions of the illustrators’ ideal woman captured the increasingly independent spirit of American women. The illustrations both shaped and reflected American society and its notions of female beauty. Compared to women of previous eras, these women relished more freedoms, enjoyed greater opportunities in sports and education, and were at the vanguard of a time when women effected change through social and political movements on an unprecedented scale in Western culture. Also showing at the NMAI are Maxfield Parrish: The Retrospective, which has been extended due to popular demand through Fall 2013, and Howard Pyle & His Brandywine Students, showcasing the works of Howard Pyle, N.C.

WORLD WAR I POSTERS AND THE FEMALE FORM: ASSERTING OWNERSHIP OF THE AMERICAN WOMAN LAURA M. ROTHER Bachelor of Arts in English John Carroll University January, 2003 submitted in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree MASTERS OF ARTS IN HISTORY at the CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY May, 2008 This thesis has been approved for the Department of ART HISTORY and the College of Graduate Studies by ___________________________________________ Thesis Chairperson, Dr. Samantha Baskind _________________________ Department & Date ____________________________________________ Dr. Marian Bleeke ________________________ Department & Date _____________________________________________ Dr. Elizabeth Lehfeldt ___________________________ Department & Date WORLD WAR I POSTERS AND THE FEMALE FORM: ASSERTING OWNERSHIP OF THE AMERICAN WOMAN LAURA M. ROTHER ABSTRACT Like Britain and continental Europe, the United States would utilize the poster to garner both funding and public support during World War I. While war has historically been considered a masculine endeavor, a relatively large number of these posters depict the female form. Although the use of women in American World War I visual propaganda may not initially seem problematic, upon further inspection it becomes clear that her presence often served to promote racial and national pretentiousness. Based on the works of popular pre-war illustrators like Howard Chandler Christy and Charles Dana Gibson, the American woman was the most attractive woman in the in the world. Her outstanding wit, beauty and intelligence made her the only suitable mate for the supposed racially superior American man. With the onset of war, however, the once entertaining romantic scenarios in popular monthlies and weeklies now represented what America stood to lose, and the “American Girl” would make the transition from magazine illustrations to war poster with minimal alterations.

Canadian Magazine Illustrators at Home and in the United States, 1880-1960 by Shannon Jaleen Grove Doctor of Philosophy in Art History and Criticism Stony Brook University 2014 This dissertation analyzes nationalisms in the work of Canadian magazine illustrators in Toronto and New York, 1880 to 1960. Using a continentalist approach—rather than the nationalist lens often employed by historians of Canadian art—I show the existence of an integrated, joint North American visual culture. Drawing from primary sources and biography, I document the social, political, corporate, and communication networks that illustrators traded in. I focus on two common visual tropes of the day—that of the pretty girl and that of wilderness imagery.

  • Brothers Grimm's Fairy Tales︰ Re-Oriented in Maurice Sendak's
Brothers Grimm’s Fairy Tales: Re-oriented in Maurice Sendak’s Illustration Chi-Min Chang Intergrams 19.1-19.2(2019): http://benz.nchu.edu.tw/~intergrams/intergrams/191-192/191-192-chang.pdf ISSN: 1683-4186 ABSTRACT Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales have been not merely the popular read for children but a significant inspiration for writers and illustrators. The revision of the fairy tales has been constant ever since the first version in 1810 by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm and so have the re-illustrations. The re-illustrations enrich the meanings of the stories and enhance the intricate relations between the texts and the illustrations. Maurice Sendak, a prominent illustrator and writer for children’s stories, was noted for illustrating Grimms’ fairy tales. He ever said that his intention in illustrating Grimms’ fairy tales is to have the readers who think the stories are simple reread them again. Yet, what is significant about the re-reading? Obvious is Sendak’s intention to re- orient the story-reading and foreground the impact of the illustrations upon textual reading. Sendak’s illustration of Grimms’ tales is mainly presented in the book titled The Juniper Tree and Other Tales from Grimm, in which he has one full-page picture for each story. What is compelling in his illustration rests on the unexpected but captivating images which radically transform the reader’s idea of the stories such as “Snow White,” “Hansel and Gretel,” and “Rapunzel,” etc. But the questions are: How did Sendak renew the images for these stories? How do these images re-interpret these well-known stories? The exploration of Sendak’s illustration of the well-known stories in The Juniper Tree and Other Tales from Grimm focuses on how Sendak re-orients the reading of Brothers Grimm’s tales with the reconfigured text-image relation.

  • The Art of Jerry Pinkney Teacher Resource
Witness: The Art of Jerry Pinkney Teacher Resource WEB SECTION #1: Introduction to Jerry Pinkney “I’ve found it interesting to trace how the chapters of my life have knitted themselves into my art.” —Jerry Pinkney In its purest sense, the act of artistic creation is a bit like looking at oneself in the mirror and leaving one’s reflection behind. All that an artist is, all that he believes, and all the many things he has witnessed in his time, become one with his art. Across his fifty-year journey as an illustrator, Jerry Pinkney has cast a warm, curious eye on our world to create transcendent images that reflect his passion for life, his love of family and community, and his deep and abiding engagement with the rich complexities of history. Born in Philadelphia in 1939, Pinkney studied at the Philadelphia College of Art. He began his career as a graphic designer in 1960 and has been illustrating children’s books since 1964. His art has appeared in more than one hundred books, garnering Pinkney well-deserved acclaim as the recipient of a Caldecott Medal and multiple Caldecott Honor Medals and Coretta Scott King Awards. In addition to his work in children’s books, Pinkney has created illustrations for a wide variety of clients, including the U.S. Postal Service, National Park Service, and National Geographic. Whether recreating history or breathing new life into classic tales, this master watercolorist is always about much more than just the appearance of things. The exhibition explores this gifted creator’s legacy through powerful images that offer insights into where we have been, who we are, and who we might become.
