Worldwide IP Suppliers

The D&R web portal is dedicated to Intellectual Property typically integrated into electronic systems.

Which products from which providers are displayed on D&R web site?

D&R website’s goal is to display the key components required for designing a System on Chip (SoC) or electronic subsystem, focusing on the Intellectual Property whether it is proprietary or externally acquired from a third party. The types of products displayed include Silicon IPs, Verification IP, Software IP, as well as Design Platform, Prototyping Platforms, and EDA tools especially those aimed at IP based chip design.

This report focuses, in priority, on the Silicon IP sector.

The providers whose IPs are listed in the D&R catalogs can be segmented into several categories:

· Providers of licensable IP whose core business is the licensing of a set of IP blocks often dedicated to a specific market segment.

· EDA vendors which sell design tool flows (design and/or qualification) and for which an IP (Silicon IP or verification IP) portfolio (the successor to high level libraries) is mandatory to support these design flows.

· Design centers whose core business or mission is to provide design services or turnkey solutions to the market .These services are partially based on certain high value IPs that are licensed “individually” as stand alone blocks. In other words a design center may at a given point decide to license a high value design block, to a broad customer base, thereby triggering a large amount of design activity

· Fabless IP providers who may be interested in licensing a design block, not only for direct or immediate income, but also for building an industry standard around this strategic block, and taking a leadership position for its fabless business as the market grows. In this fabless category, FPGA vendors play a very special role as they offer a near-complete solution, providing devices, design tools, and all levels of libraries including IP portfolios. The FPGA vendors have build strong third-party IP partner programs in order to make their offering more attractive

· IDM or ASIC vendors which may publicize a technology based design platform by emphasizing their proprietary IP portfolio. D&R decided very early on to report about these offerings, as they make an important contribution to defining ‘de facto’ standards for basic macro block libraries which are provided when launching a SoC design. These companies may also partner with third party IP providers to increase the attractiveness of their design platform to their customers. Thus it is important to cover IP design platforms and technology captive IP portfolios when analyzing the IP provider market.

The diagram below (figure 4) shows the layers of the players promoting IP for Electronic Design. The size of each layer is linked to the business size. In other words the supply base ranges from a (relatively) large number of small players down to a small number of much larger providers.

The chart below shows that on D&R website today, 28% of the IPs published are licensable IP products from vendors which fully dedicate their activity to licensable IP sales. Meanwhile, 46% are high level design centers using the IP based design paradigm as a differentiator with respect to competitors.

The Fabless chip vendors, emphasizing their IP portfolio, are the next largest category of providers, closely followed by EDA vendors.

Finally, the group of ASIC, ASSP, IDMs promoting their IP based approach as a sales catalyst, grows slowly, but is a trend to watch. As said above, their IPs are technology dependent and are a powerful successor to macro libraries.

Hottest Provider classified according to core business

This section shows some classification of the providers according to the number of views they receive over the last 4 months. These numbers can be high for several reasons:

¨ the interest in the market; ¨ the publishing effort, technique or skill of the providers; ¨ the portfolio size may play a role. In order to identify providers with a focused scope and ‘very hot’ IPs, the size of the portfolio is completed by a “success ratio” per product; ¨ Specific promotion techniques such a “free download” to trigger the attention of a particular market segment

· Top Licensable IP Providers

Looking at the list of the providers whose core business is the licensing of IPs, we find on top of the list 5 providers illustrating perfectly well the diversity of the actors in this sector. We find, far ahead on top, a recognized analog library oriented provider namely Chipidea that could be classified as a medium sized provider. The three next ones are very close in terms of attractiveness .The first is a small but established provider, CAST, with a broad portfolio. Next is the Star processor IP provider ARM followed by Imaginations technologies which could be considered as the star IP blocks provider for multimedia and communications IPs.

· Chipidea combines the first three reasons cited above: the company provides a strong offer in a hot area, namely the analog field. It should especially be noted that this company makes a huge effort when publishing its IPs, publishing for each the technical claims associated to an implementation on a specific technology. This, of course, gives them a high visibility · CAST has built its audience by initially selecting a free Download strategy for its 8051 core. This popular core is of high interest to newcomers in the IP business, to academics, and to many product designers who need just such a core. But Cast now provides additional products such as H.264, MPEG-4 and JPEG 2000 multimedia functions plus AES and DES encryption for security- conscious systems, standard interfaces like USB, PCI, I2C, and MAC; peripheral controllers; and other serial communications cores. · ARM, the worldwide leader of IPs has changed its image and visibility profile since its acquisition of Artisan. This means that in addition to promoting the Star ARM processors and the associated AMBA bus standard, ARM needs to make the market aware, almost daily, of its latest library offering for the full picture of ARM’s range. Thus the access to ARM products on the D&R website is ramping up very quickly, and this will certainly lead to a broad audience,

© Design And Reuse S.A. Page8 8 Bulletin 27 February 2006

especially in Asia, which always wants to know quickly and immediately. · Imagination Technology Group has the strongest attraction per IP. This means that this provider has a small portfolio of highly valued blocks. We will see later on in this report that several of their blocks are the most attractive products in the field targeted by this provider

2- Design centers The successful design centres, which are currently also very well known IP providers, are listed below. The companies at the top of the list represent all three continents. It is gratifying to see a European player, namely sci-worx, on top of the list. sci- worx publishes a restricted portfolio of highly valued IPs and gets the highest number of views per IP. Faraday is directly connected to a Taiwanese Foundry and is more a broad library provider. Qualcore has also a broad portfolio and, like Chipidea, demonstrates high quality publishing efforts especially in the analog area. Next in the list is a French provider Dolphin Integration known for its offer in the memory area analog and mixed signal IPs but also its configurable processor; Silicon and Software Systems has a restricted portfolio of highly valued blocks in the mixed signal sector such ADCs, DACs, PLLs and LVDS transmitters Finally Eureka succeeds to capture a hot attention in the IP native sector namely the interface and peripheral fields

3- EDA Vendors providing IP (Silicon IP, Verification IP) portfolio

It is not surprising to see the three top EDA vendors worldwide appear at the top of the list. has gone aggressively back on the top position far ahead of the competitors due to some new hot IPs (Wireless USB, etc…) as well as a good position in several areas (VIP, interface, etc..) Cadence gets the best exposure due to its on going design service efforts leveraging the ex-Tality design center. follows these market leaders though some way behind.

4- IP based ASSP/IDM vendors In this category we can see some innovative companies emphasizing their technology and their IC design through their IP library. LSI Logic has been the pioneer for several years and boasts a broad IP portfolio (Coreware) linked to its design platform while actively supporting third party suppliers. LSI Logic ensures high quality publishing by putting in place direct data import from their design data base to the catalog; Note that at the same time, it offers licensable IPs in the DSP field. Conexant is a surprising active newcomer following its acquisition of Amphion and Paxonet. But it raises the question of whether it will continue to license these cores. For and Hitachi, technology captive IPs are publicized for promoting their technology platform ad well as their strengths in fast an reliable design Attention for the Robert Bosch licensable cores dedicated to the automotive market remains stable.

5- Fabless IC vendors As mentioned above, among the Fabless Providers, the FPGA vendors have to be treated separately as they have distinct differences compared with any other players in the IP field.

5.1- Fabless programmable Chip Vendors

The FPGA vendors are strong IP promoters and offer, together with their design flows, very good IP portfolios to their clients. Note that they are very active in establishing third party vendor programs .The number of views including those of their third party alliances is not included in the table below. has taken a strong top leading position for the first time due to very accurate and comprehensive product publishing. Direct data import process from their design center data to D&R catalogs has been put in place and a significant result in terms of visibility has been achieved Actel continues to attract a significant activity, possibly due to the fact that it is working actively on expanding its share of the FPGA market for space and military applications which generates a reasonable portion of the visitors for D&R website It has been observed on the D&R website that there is huge demand worldwide for centralized information about FPGA IPs. D&R has opened a special “DSP on FPGA” corner on its website which is very popular. Thus D&R will follow actively the FPGA track in the next few years. The views in the” FPGA DSP corner” will be reported in a future issue.

5.2-Other Fabless Chip Vendors

This is a category that D&R considers as one of the most promising in terms of impact and dissemination of the IP concept. It comprises large companies which commonly have some patented ”jewel block” that they are willing to license to other chip vendors. The best of them typically establish a de facto worldwide standard (such as the SATA blocks of Silicon Image) Nordic Semiconductor is the most remarkable representatives in this category for the last 4 months Note the hot attention given to the first very active IP provider from China namely Shanga Fullhan Microelectronics who got the absolute record over the whole web site about the number of views per product

Worldwide IP Offers and market attractiveness

1- Silicon IP Offerings

An impressive number of 5300 IPs have been displayed the 4 last months on D&R web portal coming from 345 providers, and these have been classified in a number of major categories .The table below shows the number of suppliers for the most significant categories

Category Number of Suppliers Physical Library 29 Analog & Mixed Signal 69 Arithmetic & Mathematic Functions 17 Bus Interfaces 106 Digital Signal Processing 66 Peripheral Cores 89 Memory Element 29 Security / Error Corr. Det. / Modulation 90 Video / Image / Audio 54 Processors & Microcontrollers 85 Wireless Communications 40 Wireline Communications 76 Platform Level IP 31

Table 8: Number of Suppliers in each product category

The distribution of these 5300 Silicon IPs (see table below) across these application fields shows a heavy skew towards Analog & Mixed Signal. This is primarily due to the granularity of the definition of this field. Most of the providers adopt description styles featuring various instances of parameterized blocks, for instance, on various technologies. This category has therefore to be considered somewhat separately.

Among the other categories, bus interfaces and peripherals are still the main target of Silicon IPs followed by wireless and more recently by security IPs.

2- Other IP offerings

Verification IPs from 42 providers are associated with specific Silicon IPs, for testing them either as standalone blocks, or more often once integrated in a system. This group is therefore limited and comes mainly from the major EDA vendors or highly specialized providers.

The 247 Verification IPs are distributed in key areas namely bus interface, core interconnect, and memory interface. This is understandable as the blocks are related to standards-based IP, and they facilitate formal or assertion based verification.

Software IPs from 84 providers increasingly play a key role in the IP arena and the D&R web portal is consequently giving more attention to this category of IPs. The 340 Software IPs are primarily application-oriented software blocks, followed by communication stacks. Other categories, such as operating systems and device drivers, are not yet very active

3- IP based Design Platforms offerings

As said earlier D&R pays special attention to IP based platforms for which the concept of IP is key.

D&R has listed 86 well known Design platforms. The most popular category addresses Technology Centric platforms. The providers are chip vendors and their technology / process are leveraged by their IP portfolio. Again the FPGA vendors play a very special role as they have been active very early to provide design platforms to support their broad customer base.

The Core Centric platforms should be merged with the Interconnect Centric platforms. Such platforms were initially related to established cores, they progressively shifted to bus centric platforms such as the AMBA platforms and additionally deal with some bus standard proposals such as OCPIP platforms.

Finally the EDA centric platforms are EDA design tool flow platforms. Recently some interconnect or “integration standard” centric platforms have emerged, following the latest standards initiative, Spirit, which is rapidly gaining ground.
