It is a highly disorderly genus because of the great number of species as well as a multitude of features occurring in many combinations. Both the number of species assigned to this genus, and the infrageneric classifications of Maxillaria, are not clearly resolved yet. In this paper, a phylogenetic study based on Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) sequences is presented. The results show the monophyletic character of the subtribe Maxillariinae and the paraphyletic character of Maxillaria. Within these genera, difficulties occur when assigning names to plants using traditional morphological techniques. Many herbarium specimens are in bad condition and some descriptions are incomplete. To date, infrageneric classifications have been based on very few diagnostic characters. Here, three approaches have been evaluated: A systematic analysis of the morphology, an examination of two regions of DMA sequence and an analysis of the chemical composition of the floral fragrances. Morphological analysis showed that Lycaste is not monophyletic. There was a clear division between species currently ascribed to sect. Fimbriatae and the other species of the genus.

Lipińska & Agnieszka K. Kowalkowska Summary: The genus Maxillaria s. l. constitutes the core of the subtribe Maxillariinae Benth. It is estimated that ca 56% of the Maxillaria species attract pollinators by 'empty promises'. Among the rest, there are three types of reward: nectar, pseudopollen and wax-like substances. In this paper we present the results of the investigation of lip epidermis of 20 species from 11 sections and one complex. For the study, we used scanning electron microscope (SEM). In all studied species, the presence of the papillae in various shapes has been demonstrated. Obpyriform papillae seem to be the most common and their presence has been noticed on the labellar surface of 15 species from all investigated sections. Conical papillae have been found on the lip surface of 10 species from 8 sections, villiform – in 10 species from 9 sections, clavate papillae – only in 4 species, each from different sections and elliptic papillae have been noticed only in a single species. Trichomes are limited to 7 species. Pseudopollen has been recorded only in species from the Grandiflora-complex.

    Orchid Research Newsletter No. 71 January 2018 "All science is either physics or stamp collecting." This statement, attributed to Ernest Rutherford, is perhaps my favourite example of the either-or fallacy. Science is either physics or stamp collecting. Rather condescending towards a field like biology, isn't it? Perhaps we should be grateful that 'stamp collecting' is still allowed to hide under the Science umbrella. But nonsense is nonsense, whatever the reputation of the person who said it. For what we have here is a false dilemma. It's not a matter of either-or. 'Physics' and 'stamp collecting' are more like two extremes of a continuum (and I would suggest that pure mathematics rather than physics occupies one extremity). All science is a mixture of observation, classification, induction and deduction, in various proportions. Even Rutherford's own field of particle physics has an element of stamp collecting in it. Is there so much difference between classifying and describing subatomic particles and classifying and describing orchids? It seems to me that the main difference lies in the difficulty of making observations. It can be enormously complicated and expensive to observe an elementary particle, whereas observing an orchid requires at most a decent microscope (admittedly, finding the orchid in the first place can be challenging). Nor is it the case that the physicist's particles are embedded in a theory and the species of the biologist are not. I would argue that species are theoretical constructs almost as much as electrons and Higgs bosons are. Species exist in space and time; we can never observe them directly in all their aspects.

D., Associate Dean, Graduate School May, 2010 i ABSTRACT Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) is a water-conserving mode of photosynthesis present in approximately 7% of vascular plant species worldwide. CAM photosynthesis minimizes water loss by limiting CO2 uptake from the atmosphere at night, improving the ability to acquire carbon in water and CO2-limited environments. In neotropical orchids, the CAM pathway can be found in up to 50% of species. To better understand the role of CAM in species radiations and the molecular mechanisms of CAM evolution in orchids, we performed carbon stable isotopic composition of leaf samples from 1,102 species native to Panama and Costa Rica, and character state reconstruction and phylogenetic trait analysis of CAM and epiphytism. When ancestral state reconstruction of CAM is overlain onto a phylogeny of orchids, the distribution of photosynthetic pathways shows that C3 photosynthesis is the ancestral state and that CAM has evolved independently several times within the Orchidaceae.
