A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, DICK PIPPEN, [email protected]

Greetings Orchid Lovers—Wow! What a great turn out for our April regular meeting. 105 people and lots and lots of very nice brought in for the Table “friendly competition,” as well as lots of delectable “goodies” to entice our appetites on the refreshment table. (Thanks to all you people who faithfully keep our refreshment table full of tasty tidbits!!) Everyone was prepared to hear Axel Cahiz from Amazonia Orchids, Homestead, FL, talk about some of his favorite orchids, but the birth of his and his wife’s first baby precluded his coming to our meeting. So, fortunately, we have Bill Overton who was willing to step in with literally a moment’s notice, and deliver an excellent presentation on some of his favorite orchids, the New Guinea (Latouria) and Hairy Dendrobs! Thanks Bill!! We really appreciate your willingness to step in where and when needed. Also, I need to give special thanks to Lanelle Bishop and Sheila Demkovitch who labored relentlessly throughout the meeting (as they do most meetings) to take care of our Plant Table. Tabulating all the votes, putting the ribbons on the winning plants, sacrificing hearing the speaker is a major effort, especially at our April meeting when so many plants were displayed. They could really use some help if anyone would like to volunteer to help. “You don’t know enough you say”—well volunteering is a great way to learn . I am very pleased to announce that, once again, we are able to support two interns from Dr. Larry Zettler’s Orchid Recovery Program (Illinois College) to continue their on-going study of the Ghost Orchid in the Fakahatachee Strand and the Panther Preserve this summer. And not only the two interns - we are also able to help fund Dr. Ernesto Mujica and his associate, Dr. Elaine Gonzalez from Cuba (assuming they are able to obtain visas.) The Board of Directors agreed to fund $4000 for this project and Bill Overton agreed to add the additional $1000 needed. Thanks again to Bill!!! Hopefully we will be able to hear all about the progress being made on this project at our July meeting. Speaking of meetings—our May meeting, May 4th will feature John Budree who was supposed to be our March speaker, but was unable to come. He will be telling us all about Phalaenopsis. Then for June—a special treat—Mark Reinke from Marble Branch Farms in South Carolina will be our featured speaker. Mark is an excellent hybridizer of orchids and I am sure will be a very interesting speaker and have some interesting plants to sell. HOWEVER—Mark cannot make it on the first Thursday of June, so for this year only, our June meeting will be on the SECOND Thursday of June, June 8. Please mark that in your calendars. Until then—keep your orchids happy. …….. Dick

NOTES FROM YOUR AOS REP. AND THE ORCHID DOCTOR Bill Overton

It was really very special to get the opportunity to speak before the club last month! Over the last ten years or so, Dendrobiums have had an expanded role in my own personal orchid collection. For the simple fact that so many of the Latouria and Nigro-hirstue types bloom again and again from the same canes make them doubly rewarding. These orchids are easy to grow provided you meet their basic needs. Remember to use a fairly fine orchid media, not open with coarse chunks or large pieces. They possess fairly thin roots and demand more water than most orchids. Also keep it in mind that they do not like to be ‘over-potted.’ Make sure the pot size is appropriate to the size of the viable root system. Do not allow for two years future growth like you might with a . Dendrobiums grow bulbs fairly close together along their rhizome, thus they never really fill up a pot that is too large. Lastly give these orchids good air movement, regular waterings and a couple hours of sunshine each day. Morning sunshine is always the best. For the remainder of the day just give them bright light. Mine are growing under 50% shade cloth. The other thing I wanted to mention is to remind everyone of the upcoming Redlands Orchid Festival at the Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead, Florida. It is a spectacular event featuring dozens of vendors with plants, supplies and specialty items all orchid related. This is the one event you do not want to miss. It is a three day festival on the weekend of May 19-21, 2017. I am going over on Friday and hope to see a few of our club members there! …………….. Bill

BE ON THE ALERT FOR PESTS ON YOUR ORCHIDS!!!

With the warm dry weather we have been experiencing watch out for thrips and mites. Thrips are tiny insects, 1/32” long, & feed on flowers, buds and leaves, sucking out the juices. If you suspect thrips try shaking the bud/flower over a white sheet of paper and watch for tiny black specks. The most effective treatments are systemic – Orthene (Acephate) can be sprayed directly on to flowers. If you do not want to use the systemic chemicals you may use alcohol or Neem oil but will need to use more frequently as these are only topical. Be sure to spray in early morning or late in day. Mites cause similar damage and require a miticide. Make sure you are using correct pesticide before treating any pests. FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS!

An Orchid Vignette—Jamaica Red Brandi

Cattleytonia Brandi and Cattleytonia Jamaica Red are two vibrant red Cattleytonias. Cattleytonias are traditionally a combination of a species of Broughtonia (usually Bro. sanguinea) and a species of Cattleya. But these, Ctna. Brandi and Ctna. Jamaica Red, are more complex hybrids.

Cattleytonia Brandi resulted from crossing two different Cattleytonias: Ctna. Rosy Jewel x Ctna. Keith Roth. It was created by Richella Orchids in Honolulu, Hawaii and registered by them in 1982. It has received one AOS award, an AM in 1993 to the cultivar ‘O.C.’ The flowers are purplish red with a darker reddish lip, and like its parent, Ctna. Rosy Jewel, it has that has yellow striations in the lip. Ctna. Brandi has been used as a parent in at least 42 registered crosses! I love some of the names of the offspring, “take-offs” on the Brandi theme: Swill of Brandy, Sniff of Brandy, Dash of Brandy, Nip of Brandy, Double Brandy, Chocolate Brandy and many more. You can get drunk on just the names! Because Ctna. Rosy Jewel is now a Guaritonia, that makes Brandi a Guaricattonia. Go figure! Cattleytonia Jamaica Red was created by backcrossing Cattleytonia Keith Roth with Broughtonia sanguinea. It was created by W.W.G Moir of Hawaii (Moir was the pioneer in making hybrids using Broughtonia) and registered by him in 1972 (thus it a “much older” grex than Ctna. Brandi). Ctna Jamaica Red has been a very popular and successful grex. It has earned 24 AOS awards and has been a parent in 37 crosses, with about 190 “grandkids!” The flowers are a very vibrant red- lavender color with just a little yellow striping in the throat, An advantage of Cattleytonias is that they are “smallish” plants, less than a foot high with clusters of 5-7 flowers held high above the foliage on 6-8 inch stalks. That makes them much easier to see since the flowers themselves are small, usually only about 2 inches across and “flattish,” reminding me of pansies in shape, not colors. For people in “the North” these are good windowsill plants, but for us here in SW Florida, they grow well in pool cages or shade houses and do not take up a lot of space. Many Cattleytonias, including these two, flower more than once a year. Cattleytonias prefer bright light, high humidity, lots of water in the growing season and less in the dry season. I grow my plants in a pool cage where they receive bright filtered light. I am growing most of my plants now in a bark mix (bark, charcoal, sponge rock). I fertilize weakly about once a week. I really like Cattleytonias and I think you will, too. Give them a try. Contributed by Dick Pippen
