336 Book Reviews GILDART,KEITH. Images of England through Popular Music. Class, Youth and Rock ’n’ Roll, 1955–1976. Palgrave MacMillan, Basingstoke [etc.] 2013. ix, 209 pp. £55.00; $85.00. doi:10.1017/S0020859014000273 Keith Gildart’s Images of England places popular music centre-stage in its exploration of class, youth, and social change between the mid-1950s and mid-1970s. Popular music is defined as American rock and roll and rhythm and blues because these soundscapes most profoundly influenced the collective and personal identities of young people. They per- meated the everyday lives of individuals like the ‘‘Lemon Drop Kid’’, a young Lancashire miner from Wigan, whose vivid memories as a performer and consumer of rock and roll preface the book and whose photograph, playing in a band in Bolton in the early 1960s, is on its front cover. Gildart evokes popular music as both a personal escape for the likes of the ‘‘Lemon Drop Kid’’ and a signpost of new social and cultural directions, which in affirming a sense of locality and class identity also contests the ‘‘myth’’ of classless youth and the notion that postwar affluence weakened class-consciousness. Popular and theoretical accounts tend to dominate studies of popular music in the postwar period and Images of England is a welcome addition to a small but growing literature by social historians. It aims to historicize theoretical approaches pioneered by the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS), whose emphases on culture and music as sites of working-class struggle and resistance inform the book’s detailed empirical studies.

  • Georgie Fame
Georgie Fame Born on 26th June 1943 in the industrial town of Leigh, Lancashire, his interest in music grew from family entertainment “sessions” at home and musical evenings in the church hall across the street, where his father played in an amateur dance band. Although he took piano lessons for a short time at the age of seven, it wasn’t until the advent of rock’n’roll on radio during the mid-fifties that young Georgie began to take the family piano seriously. Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard were among his catalysts. Upon leaving school, shortly after his fifteenth birthday, he followed the family tradition and took a job as an apprentice cotton weaver in one of the many local mills. Leisure time, however, was spent playing piano in various pubs and with a local group, “The Dominoes”. In July 1959, at a summer holiday camp, Georgie was spotted by Rory Blackwell, the resident rock’n’roll bandleader, who offered the young singer/pianist a full time job. Goodbye, weaving shed. Rory and the Blackjacks departed for London, their hometown, when the summer season ended prematurely and Georgie went with them. The promised glamorous work did not materialise and the band broke up, but the determined young man from Leigh eventually took up a solo residency at The Essex Arms pub in London’s Dockland, where the kindly landlord provided a room to sleep in. In October of that year, the Marty Wilde Show was performing at the Lewisham Gaumont and Rory Blackwell arranged for Georgie to audition “live” for impressario Larry Parnes.

  • A Later Version of This Essay Appeared As 'Chris Blackwell and 'My Boy
(A later version of this essay appeared as ‘Chris Blackwell and ‘My Boy Lollipop’: Ska, Race and British Popular Music’ in Journal of Popular Music Studies, vol 22, no 4, 2010, pp. 436-465.) Chris Blackwell and “My Boy Lollipop”: Ska, Race and British Popular Music Ska evolved in Jamaica around 1960. I shall talk a little more about its development later. In 1964 there were three hits in the British top ten that utilized a ska beat. On March 14 Millie reached number 2 with “My Boy Lollipop.” A week later, the Migil 5’s ska version of “Mockin’ Bird Hill” reached number 10, its highest position. In December, Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames got to number 1 with the jazz track, “Yeh Yeh,” to which they gave a soft ska influence. Discussions of ska, and reggae, have tended to focus on the music’s Jamaican origins and have emphasized its qualities as black music. In this article my interest is in the relationship between ska and British popular music of the early 1960s. How did ska enter white Britons’ musical consciousness such that, by the late 1960s there were numerous ska hits and, by the late 1970s, there was a ska revival with groups such as Madness and the Two Tone groups including the Specials and Selector having chart hits? To this end I shall concentrate on the most popular of the three 1964 ska hits, Millie’s “My Boy Lollipop.” This song was first recorded as a rhythm and blues song in New York by Barbie Gaye about whom little is known other than that she was not black.

THE TIMELESS EXCELLENCE OF GEORGIE FAME by Eric Myers _____________________________________________________________ Georgie Fame & The Thrill Seekers The Basement Sydney Morning Herald, November 18, 1980 _____________________________________________________________ n Sunday night at The Basement, 37-year-old Georgie Fame convincingly demonstrated why he is often considered the best rhythm- O and-blues singer to have come out of England. With superb intonation and jazz-oriented phrasing, Mr Fame's voice resembles a finely honed musical instrument, rather than a conventional vocal sound. He has been singing like this for more than 20 years, yet his style is as timeless and contemporary as ever. Georgie Fame: his style is as timeless and contemporary as ever… PHOTO CREDIT JANE MARCH 1 He was backed by the Thrill Seekers, a group of top Sydney jazz musicians specially assembled for his Australian tour. They included Keith Stirling (trumpet), Col Loughnan (saxophones and flute), Herb Cannon (trombone), Steve Murphy (guitar), Greg Lyon (bass) and Willie Qua (drums). The Australian backing group The Thrill Seekers included guitarist Steve Murphy (above) and electric bassist Greg Lyon (below)… "Backed" is probably a misnomer, for these fine Australian musicians, given generous solo space throughout the evening, were as much part of the performance as Georgie Fame himself. The Thrill Seekers were, in my view, far 2 superior to Mr Fame's English band, The Blue Flames, whom I saw in London in 1978. Georgie Fame's approach to music is full of delightful subtleties and arcane references. He sang an exquisite version of a song which was never actually I'm In The Mood For Love, but a classic James Moody saxophone solo on the tune, to which words have been set.

Great trombone player, British jazz and blues giant Chris Barber, has unearthed, after many years of forgetfulness, these legendary recordings done in 1958 and 1964, for the joy and happiness of music fans.
