Many writers cite early childhood as the period when they were first drawn to books and poetry. What drew you to litera- ture initially? I was born in Baglung in the mid-western part of Nepal. Until the age of five I was under care of my grandparents in a small village, Bihunkot. Later on, I went to live with my parents in some other village of Baglung, where I stayed most my childhood. Both are very remote villages where nature is the only technology to which villagers have access. Daily life of local people is led with simplicity and complete dependence on nature. From the early morning shower in natural spring water till the moon-lightened stone trails at late evening, everything remains shaped by nature and virginally untouched by man. Definitely, the contact with nature during my childhood has enlightened me and awakened my senses for poetry. Many of those experiences are still reflected in my Haiku. 66 67 What are your interests/hobbies outside of literature? What style or genres of literature do you enjoy as a reader? Actually, poetry is my main past time. As a postgraduate student I enjoy reading all types of poetry in general but especially true in Science, my days are fully stressed with assignments and Haiku pieces. Social Sciences and Humanities Japanese scholars have shown diverse interests in this field as we see below. Before 1950 Among less than a dozen Japanese who visited Nepal before 1950, Kawaguchi's work is worth mentioning. Being a Buddhist monk, he became interested in Tibetan Buddhism and visited Nepal in 1899 to 1900 before he went to Tibet and returned again in 1902 and 1905. The travelogues of his trips contain valuable descriptions of Nepal at that time as well as information on Buddhism. (Kawaguchi 1909, 1966) Sanskrit Buddhist manuscripts, sculpture and his other collections are kept in several institutions in Japan and are still being studied.

She argues that every conscious citizen of a country has the responsibility towards the political history of violence. It is natural for citizens to be optimistic about the future. But the author contends that a politically conscious citizen wills justice to the political future when and only when he fulfils his duty towards the political and cultural past. By reminiscing and recalling the disasters and catastrophe of the past the probable mishaps can be averted. Thapa argues that human rights were mostly violated during Maoist insurgency from both side-one from the side of the underground insurgents and the second is the state-sponsored counter insurgency. By being familiar with these gruesome details of the ugly political past, the politically incorrect representation of violence can be amended. The representation of violence generated by underground Maoist insurgency and state-sponsored counter-insurgency appears to be problematical. Manjushree Thapa‘s The Lives We Have Lost is the tilted representation of the political history of Nepal since the rise of the underground Maoist insurgency. There can be different motives of Maoists to launch underground insurgency.
