a monthly newsletter publication of First Presbyter ian Church summer preaching series − david: larger than life...and yet like us!

avid is one biblical character that is definitely larger than life. Michelangelo seemed to D understand that well. His Renaissance masterpiece sculpture of David stands seventeen feet tall and stops you in your tracks demanding your attention as you make that right hand turn in the Accademia Gallery in Florence, Italy. Even a cursory reading of the David narratives in 1 and 2 Samuel does the same. You can’t simply pass by. They stop you in your tracks and seduce you into reading them a second and third time. Upon reading them again and again, one discovers a beautiful musical hero, and yet an overly ambitious and calculating human with a flawed moral character. He is shepherd, musician, warrior, and poet…and yet like us. David is both son of Jesse and king of Israel…and yet like us. He is one who loves God, and yet struggles like us. He is a legend…and yet like us. He is larger than life…and yet like us. The title of this summer’s preaching series is “David: Larger Than Life…and Yet Like Us!” Each Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in the sanctuary during June, July, and August, the sermon will focus on one of the David stories found in 1 and 2 Samuel. Through David’s passions, the trials, and lyrical poetry, we will gain powerful insights into the role of God in our own lives. Each story provides a vivid lesson in everyday faith and spirituality. The texts (on page 3) will be the focus each Sunday. Limited copies of Leap Over a Wall by Eugene Peterson (one of the sources for our summer preaching series) are available in the church office for $11.00 each.

During the months of June, summer July, August, we have the sunday schedule opportunity to join together as one worshiping community.

he Session recently discussed and voted to have one worship service during these summer months. The time of the T service will be a compromise for both those who are accustomed to worshiping at 8:30 a.m. and those who normally worship at 11:00 a.m. Our summer schedule will be as follows: 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. – Sunday School for all ages 9:15 a.m. Summer Choir Rehearsal 9:45 a.m. - Session meets for prayer 9:45 a.m. – Coffee Fellowship in the Welcome Center 10:00 a.m. – Worship in the Sanctuary 11:00 a.m. – Lemonade-on-the-Lawn What a great opportunity to see and worship with some fellow church members that you normally do get to see.
