Court in the Market: The ‘Business’ of a Princely Court in the Burgundian Netherlands, 1467-1503 Jun Hee Cho Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Jun Hee Cho All rights reserved ABSTRACT Court in the Market: The ‘Business’ of a Princely Court in the Burgundian Netherlands, 1467-1503 Jun Hee Cho This dissertation examines the relations between court and commerce in Europe at the onset of the modern era. Focusing on one of the most powerful princely courts of the period, the court of Charles the Bold, duke of Burgundy, which ruled over one of the most advanced economic regions in Europe, the greater Low Countries, it argues that the Burgundian court was, both in its institutional operations and its cultural aspirations, a commercial enterprise. Based primarily on fiscal accounts, corroborated with court correspondence, municipal records, official chronicles, and contemporary literary sources, this dissertation argues that the court was fully engaged in the commercial economy and furthermore that the culture of the court, in enacting the ideals of a largely imaginary feudal past, was also presenting the ideals of a commercial future. It uncovers courtiers who, despite their low rank yet because of their market expertise, were close to the duke and in charge of acquiring and maintaining the material goods that made possible the pageants and ceremonies so central to the self- representation of the Burgundian court. It exposes the wider network of court officials, urban merchants and artisans who, tied by marriage and business relationships, together produced and managed the ducal liveries, jewelries, tapestries and finances that realized the splendor of the court.

  • League of the Public Weal, 1465
League of the Public Weal, 1465 It is not necessary to hope in order to undertake, nor to succeed in order to persevere. —Charles the Bold Dear Delegates, Welcome to WUMUNS 2018! My name is Josh Zucker, and I am excited to be your director for the League of the Public Weal. I am currently a junior studying Systems Engineering and Economics. I have always been interested in history (specifically ancient and medieval history) and politics, so Model UN has been a perfect fit for me. Throughout high school and college, I’ve developed a passion for exciting Model UN weekends, and I can’t wait to share one with you! Louis XI, known as the Universal Spider for his vast reach and ability to weave himself into all affairs, is one of my favorite historical figures. His continual conflicts with Charles the Bold of Burgundy and the rest of France’s nobles are some of the most interesting political struggles of the medieval world. Louis XI, through his tireless work, not only greatly transformed the monarchy but also greatly strengthened France as a kingdom and set it on its way to becoming the united nation we know today. This committee will transport you to France as it reinvents itself after the Hundred Years War. Louis XI, the current king of France, is doing everything in his power to reform and reinvigorate the French monarchy. Many view his reign as tyranny. You, the nobles of France, strive to keep the monarchy weak. For that purpose, you have formed the League of the Public Weal.

  • Appendix for “The Feudal Revolution and Europe's Rise: Political
Appendix for “The Feudal Revolution and Europe’s Rise: Political Divergence of the Christian West and the Muslim World before 1500 CE” August 1, 2012 1 Feudalism and Political Stability To formalize the intuition presented in Section 3.3 using a simple framework, suppose that a perfectly myopic, risk-neutral sovereign imperfectly controls a polity that creates output of size one each period. Denote by γ the amount of land controlled by the military regardless of the actions of the sovereign (this can be interpreted as the percentage of the entire polity controlled by the military). Suppose that there are N perfectly myopic, risk-neutral members of the military (where N is sufficiently large) and that γ is evenly distributed between the members of this class. We consider the parameter value γ exogenously given. A value of γ = 0 corresponds to a perfectly absolutist sovereign (who uses mamluks or mercenaries to staff his military) whereas higher values of γ denote more feudal arrangements. Note that our assumption of perfectly myopic agents allows us to abstract from the potentially important issue of how the sovereign compensates the military (i.e., iqta’ rents versus land grants).1 In addition, we abstract from other important issues in order to focus on the sovereign’s desire to prevent a successful revolt. We do so in order to highlight one mechanism that we believe contributes to the observed increase in ruler duration. The order of play in the game is as follows: after observing γ the sovereign moves first and decides whether to keep the entire amount of output he controls to himself or whether to divide it equally between himself and the military.

  • Around the World
PORTUGAL GASTRONOMY • Portuguese food is distinctive and varied, featuring many regional specialities that have evolved from local traditions and ingredients. • Much of Portuguese cooking is spice based, thanks largely to Vasco da Gama and the other navigators of his time. He and his seafaring countrymen traversed the globe collecting pepper, cloves, curry, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a range of savoury foods which serve as the base of many dishes today. Fish is a mainstay of Portuguese cuisine, particularly sardines and the ever-present dried codfish. Portuguese meat is both tasty and safe to eat, particularly pork which for centuries has been an important livestock in the country's rural economy. The annual slaughter between December and Easter is still a major event in the winter calendar of most farms and villages. In the Bairrada region north of Coimbra, many restaurants specialise in roast sucking pig. Some parts of the pig in feijoada, a bean stew made with black pudding and pork knuckle. PORTUGAL LEISURE • Despite its size, Portugal offers a great variety of terrain, with a wide range of sports and leisure activities to match. Golf and tennis facilities have been well established for many years, and in the south the mild climate means that both sports can be enjoyed all year round. In the Algarve, most of the courts in tourist complexes are hard-surfaced, although elsewhere many are clay. The larger resorts in the Algarve, Madeira and the Estoril Coast & Sintra region offer tennis coaching holidays. • Portugal’s resorts are also famous for their golf courses, which include some of Europe’s finest.

As the kingdom of France consolidated and royal authority was extended, political power became centered in the person of the king and his bureaucratic advisers. One consequence was the decline or once powerful members of the feudal aristocracy and the queen. In the time of the early Capetians, the queen had been a true partner in power with the king, traveling with him and sharing the same household. But by 1500, she was excluded from power and participation in government, and her intimacy with the ld.ng was undermined by the formation of a separate household. By the thirteenth century the governmental functions of the queen were ceremonial, decorative, or sym bolic. Thus it was only under extraordinary circumstances that a queen could gain independent political power, and such was the fate of Isabeau of Bavaria. When she married Charles VI, ld.ng or France, in 1385, he was under a regency controlled by four dukes, but in three years Charles asserted his sole authority by releasing them.

A History of the Counts of Brienne (950 – 1210) Dana Celest Asmoui Ismail Royal Holloway University of London 2013 A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Dana Celest Asmoui Ismail, Department of History, Royal Holloway, University of London Declaration of Authorship I, Dana Celest Asmoui Ismail hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed:__________________________________________ Date: __________________________________________ A History of the Counts of Brienne (950 – 1210) Abstract This thesis is a study of the counts of Brienne from the first count (950) until the departure from France of John of Brienne to claim the throne of Jerusalem (1210). The Brienne dynasty has never been subjected to an in - depth study; heretofore, the dynasty has been mentioned only in passing in both contemporary sources and more recent works. This comprehensive study of the counts of Brienne and their origins serves as an original work of scholarship on a dynasty that produced several crusaders, a champion of papal reform in Italy, a martyr at the siege of Acre and perhaps more importantly, a king of Jerusalem. The Brienne dynasty’s roots in the ideology of holy war extended back to the era of the Reconquest of Spain, which took place over twenty years before the start of the First Crusade. This thesis will use this participation in the Reconquest of Spain, the first foray into the holy warrior ethos, to establish the Brienne’s familial connections to one of the oldest and most prominent families of northern France, the Roucy.

It depends upon the line of approach, and the scenes which one stops to contemplate. One could easily bore the general reader to tears by leaning too heavily upon the Methuen Treaty or taking too much trouble to define the precise points at issue between the Chartists and the Septembrists. On the other hand, the history of the fortunes of that House of Braganza which, until the other day, controlled— or, at least, tried and affected to control—the destinies of Portugal, is sometimes diverting, and sometimes dramatic. And that whether one sees the picture as one of good men struggling with ad- versity or one of incompetent men aghast at the demand that they should accept the consequences of their incapacity and retire into private life.
