Issue 82 – August 2018 Chairman’S Column
THE TIGER Remembering Pierre Vandenbraambussche, Founder of the Last Post Association, Menin Gate, Ypres, 5th July 2018 THE NEWSLETTER OF THE LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND BRANCH OF THE WESTERN FRONT ASSOCIATION ISSUE 82 – AUGUST 2018 CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN Welcome again, Ladies and Gentlemen, to the latest edition of The Tiger. Any readers who enjoyed the tennis displayed in the recent Wimbledon Championships may be interested in the following piece from the archives of The Times, relating to a match played during the Roehampton Tournament of April 1919: Captain Hope Crisp, lost a leg in battle. He is determined to keep up golf and lawn tennis and is playing in the Gentlemen’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. It was interesting to see how he managed. He is a strong volleyer, and naturally half volleys many balls which a two- legged player would drive. The artificial limb is the right, accordingly service is fairly easy. When there is no hurry, he walks, with very fair speed, approaching a run. At other times he hops. His cheerful temperament makes the game a real pleasure to himself and others. Six years earlier, Crisp had been a Wimbledon Champion, claiming the first ever Mixed Doubles Title with his partner, Agnes Tuckey. This victory was marred by an eye injury to one of their opponents, Ethel Captain Hope Crisp Thomson Larcombe whose subsequent retirement conceded the match to Crisp and Tuckey. In 1914 the defending Champions would reach the semi-final stage before being eliminated. Pre-war, Crisp had been Captain of the Cambridge University tennis team between 1911 and 1913 and at the outbreak of War, joined the Honorable Artillery Company before being commissioned into the 3rd Battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment. -

THE MOSAIC MONTHLY ESSAY • EPISODE 2 June: The Truth of the Capture of Adolf Eichmann 1x 00:00|60:58 Sixty years ago last month, on the evening of May 23, 1960, the Israeli prime minister David Ben-Gurion made a brief but dramatic announcement to a hastily-summoned session of the Knesset in Jerusalem: A short time ago, Israeli security services found one of the greatest of the Nazi war criminals, Adolf Eichmann, who was responsible, together with the Nazi leaders, for what they called “the final solution” of the Jewish question, that is, the extermination of six million of the Jews of Europe. Eichmann is already under arrest in Israel and will shortly be placed on trial in Israel under the terms of the law for the trial of Nazis and their collaborators. In the cabinet meeting immediately preceding this announcement, Ben-Gurion’s ministers had expressed their astonishment and curiosity. -

The mere mention of these places and others like them is a devastating reminder of the ultimate experience in human suffering. These were a few of the many concentration camps -- death camps -- designed to carry out Hitler's Final Solution: to exterminate as many Jews, Slavs, Gypsies, and Homosexuals as possible and create a supreme Aryan' society. Millions upon millions of innocent civilians would suffer miserable deaths before the liberation would come.2 Who were these per- secutors? While the Nazis3 devised "the plan," supplied the materials and man-power to build the camps, and supervised these atrocities, only a few of the death camps were actually located in Germany. The camps were situated in various Slavic countries which had capitulated under Nazi onslaught.' To assist them in their crimes, the Nazis obtained the cooperation of some of the local people and prisoners of war.' Whether their participation was voluntary or not, 1. -

The House on Garibaldi Street by Isser Harel, 1912-2003 Published: 1975 J J J J J I I I I I Table of Contents Introduction by Shlomo J. Shpiro, 1997 Dramatis Personae & Chapter 1 … thru … Chapter 30 Index J J J J J I I I I I Introduction by Shlomo J. Shpiro THE PUBLIC trial in Israel of Adolf Eichmann, the man who directed the Third Reich’s ‘Final Solution’, was held in 1961 under an unprecedented publicity coverage. The trial, which took place in Jerusalem, attracted hundreds of reporters and media crews from all over the world. For the first time since the end of the Second World War the horrific crimes of the Nazi regime against the Jewish people were exposed in all their brutality by one of their leading perpetrators. Eichmann stood at the top of the Gestapo pyramid dedicated to the destruction of Europe’s Jewry, and was personally responsible not only for policy decisions but for the everyday running of this unparalleled genocide. His trial and subsequent execution brought to millions of homes around the world the untold story of the Holocaust from its chief administrator. (I-1) The Eichmann trial had a profound influence in particular on the young generation of Israeli citizens, born after the end of the Second World War. This generation, born into a country which had built itself as a national home for the Jewish people in order to prevent such persecution in the future, swore as it joined the army ‘never again’ to let Jewish people be led to their death unresisting. -
Englanti olikin koko purjelaivakauden 1800-luvulle asti riippuvainen laivanrakennuksessaan Itämeren tuonnista. 1600-luvun lopullajohtavaksi merivallaksi noussut Englanti lähetti Suuren pohjan sodan aikana jokaisena kulkukautena 1715-1721 laivastonsa Itämerelle turvaamaan merenkulun häiriöttömän jatkumisen. Britannian avomerilaivaston paikalla 010 esti Venäjän tsaarin rannikoilla ylivoimaisen kaleerilaivaston saavuttamasta meren herruutta, jollainen tilanne olisi aiheuttanut RUQtsille rauhansopimuksessa määrättyjäkin suuremmat menetykset. It mirrored the situation of governments involved in the limited interventions during the last In the conference paper “The 1918-20 International Intervention in the Baltic twenty years. Region. This first part about the background, discourse and experience of the first four months of Britain’s effort has been prepared to be read as an independent contribution. However, it is also an early version of the first chapters of the book.1 It is important to note – especially for Baltic readers – that the book is not meant to give a balanced description of what we now know happened. -
The Lavon Affair
Israel Military Intelligence: The Lavon Affair jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/History/lavon.html Best choice for browsing Browse from Czech Republic Browse from France Browse from Sweden Browse from Canada (Summer 1954) Military Intelligence: Table of Contents | The Mossad | Targeted Assassinations The Lavon Affair is a spy story in Israel's early years that left a nasty mark on the young state, with reverberations for the following 20 years. It's name derived from Israeli Defense Minister Pinhas Lavon, though it is also referred to as " Esek HaBish" or "The Mishap". Revolving around nearly a dozen young Egyptian Jews who agreed to spy for Israel against their home country, the affair taps into a story of idealism and self-sacrifice as well as abandonment and an unwillingness to take responsibility. Due to strict censorship in Israel in the early 1950's, few knew that in the year 1954 Israeli underground cells that had been operating in Egypt were uncovered by the Egyptian police. A number of young Jews were arrested and forced to undergo a show trial. Two of them - Yosef Carmon and Max Binnet - committed suicide in prison due to the brutal interrogation methods of the Egyptian police. Two more - Dr. Moshe Marzouk of Cairo and Shmuel Azar of Alexandria - were sentenced to death and hanged in a Cairo prison. Israel glorified them as martyrs. Their memory was sanctified. Neighborhoods and gardens were named after them in Israel, as were dozens of children born in the year 1955. At the same time it was not publicly conceded that they died in the service of Israel. -

Diving in From the rugged west coast, with its dramatic drop-off and unique ecosystems, to majestic wrecks—perfectly preserved over the centu- World-classSweden diving in a challenging environment ries—and crystal clear lakes, Sweden has everything. Compiled and edited by Millis Keegan and Peter Symes Text by Millis Keegan Photos by Jonas Dahm From a marine archeology and sci- entific standpoint, the Baltic Sea is a paradise. There could be as many as 100,000 shipwrecks dating back cen- turies in this dark and mysterious sea— Viking ships, trading ships and war- ships to name a few. No other place in the world is comparable to the Baltic Sea. The wrecks, and structures found in the sea are veritable time capsules lying in wait for us to explore and expand our understanding of the past. It is also a comparatively quite shallow sea. The average depth is only 55 meters deep, so with modern technology, it is not too complicated to find many of our lost histories. These histories belong to the countries sur- rounding the Baltic Sea. Granted, diving in the far North is not for the weak-minded, nor for the inexperienced, but it’s not as bad as it sounds. Scandinavian divers are known around the world for being able to cope with rather tough div- ing conditions because this is where we grew up and learned to dive. Anyone who goes through entry level training in murky waters with a visibil- ity of 2-4 m (6-12 ft) at best, a water temperature averaging 8°C to 2°C in the winter to 20°C in the summer, and comes out with a smile, will be ready to face anything else. -

The Holocaust on Trial: Shaping an Awareness Through the Triumph and Tragedy of Adolf Eichmann's Capture
The Holocaust on Trial: Shaping an Awareness Through the Triumph and Tragedy of Adolf Eichmann's Capture Zoe Fishman Junior Division Paper Word Count: 2500 [email protected] “We could only hang him once, we couldn’t hang him six million times.” -Mickey Goldman1 Thesis Adolf Eichmann was one of the most pivotal actors in the implementation of the “Final Solution.” Charged with managing and facilitating the mass deportation of Jews to ghettos and killing centers in Germany, he was among the major organizers of the Holocaust. His 1961 trial in Jerusalem, Israel, sparked international interest and heightened public awareness of the Holocaust.2 The capture and high-profile trial of Adolf Eichmann, which was due to his role in the persecution and tragic deaths of over six million Jews, was a triumph of justice and would inevitably introduce the Holocaust into historical, educational, legal, and cultural discourse. Furthermore, it would help to shape an awareness of the Holocaust in Israeli and world public opinion.3 Isser Harel and The Mossad In 1957, following World War II, Isser Harel, a spymaster of the intelligence and the security services of Israel and the Director of the Mossad,4 received a message from Frankfurt, Germany, regarding a Dr. Fritz Bauer, attorney general of Hesse, requesting to convey information to the Mossad.5 Harel soon learned that Eichmann was alive, and hiding in Argentina. 1 "THE HOLOCAUST ON TRIAL: Considering the Impact and Legacy of a Global Media Event."
