GREAT YARMOUTH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB Chairman’s Report What a strange season we have had, and what strange circumstances to return to. We would like to welcome the Management, players and committee from Sheringham FC for the Norfolk Senior Cup tie today, but it is tinged with sadness there wont be any of their colorful supporters to join ours in watching the match today. In what has been a testing season of football, I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to all the Committee, volunteers, management and players throughout the club for all their efforts so far and for all to come. A club is more than the 11 that get selected on a weekend and we have a fantastic team off the pitch throughout this great club. During lockdowns we have been incredibly busy with so much positive stuff going on behind the scenes, which we will be sharing with everyone in the coming weeks. As a taster there are exciting developments with in the links to the Youth Strand of the club, new teams coming on board including a New Ladies side for the 21-22 season, Council developments with a new Ground lease agreement in the pipeline, including developments to the Wellesley stadium to follow. On the Football front. New management teams for 21-22 are taking shape and I would like to welcome all the new Coaches/Managers to the club. I know planning is already well under way by all the management teams to improve squads for next season so plenty to look forward to. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of our wonderful sponsors for this troubled season. We have exciting news to come your way in due course regarding plans for the 2021- 22 season. We truly value your investment financially and emotionally with us and we look forward to continue working with you all in the future. We are proud of our community links and will be launching our new club values in the coming weeks which will further align our aims both on and off the pitch - and have some fantastic Charity ideas coming through for the next year as we build towards our 125th year celebrations in 2022-23—But more about those another time. GOLD BLOCK COMPANIES We are delighted to work with the listed companies to promote their business. We thank all companies for their support of the Bloaters this season.

6 www.greatyarmouthtownfc.org.uk THE MANAGERS MESSAGE WITH….

ROB McCOMBE

We find ourselves back at The Wellesley once again after what seems an eternity away from the game following the National Lockdown. We last played 118 days ago vs March in a fantastic day for the club, where we ran out deserving 3-1 winners against one of the favourites for the title this year. It was a back to back win following the earlier success vs Sudbury and we looked set to end the year on a high. Our injury problems appeared to be ending and we were looking forward to a bumper boxing day crowd with a near full strength side vs CBS. Fast forward to this weekend and unfortunately we still find ourselves in a Covid reality—no supporters, no bar and a sense of what we are missing still remains. A 3 month break and no pre season has seen significant injuries on the rise across Norfolk and I hope we can avoid anything like that with this rushed return. Out thoughts and best wishes go out to Adam Plumstead at Mulbarton who suffered a particularly bad injury this week. All the best Plummy and good luck to Mulbarton (and ) in the Vase competition this weekend.

We welcome Sheringham to the Welly today, with “ we have a fantastic crop of some familiar faces with ex players Milligan / Bobby / Wenn in their squad. We last played young players coming through at before xmas when we were thumped 6-1 on the club and we look forward to possibly the worst single performance of my time at the club. That night we were decimated what they can offer” by injuries and simply didn't turn up –individual errors killed us and we will hope for better today—albeit with several injuries hanging over us. We have not had a great run this year on the injury front, and that luck has followed us into this return to action, but I have been really impressed with young players who have come and answered the call this year. We have a fantastic crop of young players coming through at the club and look forward to what they can offer in the future for us. No more so than Wes Belston who suffered an ankle break in the Sudbury game and has now returned to training, and also to Kieran, my son who broke into the side this year and turned in some terrific performances including Motm performances vs Wisbech & March. I look forward to seeing the next wave of young lads coming through over the coming months. Lets hope we can welcome fans back to the ground soon to see them!

GYTFC RESERVES UPDATE

April 2021 NEW LOOK BLOATERS

The Decision to Curtail the season for the 2020-21 season came as a bitter disappointment to the Bloaters Reserves, sitting in a strong position of second spot (3rd on a PPG basis). A promotion charge was the aim and we were well on track. The lockdown we have just come out off took another casualty in Travis Manning deciding to step away from the role to focus on playing with his mates at newly formed Yarmouth United FC. We wish Trav all the best with this new venture. Having earlier taken a break from football (again covid/lockdown linked), Daniel Nolan has returned to join Paul Blissett in the managers hotseat for the remainder of this season and ready to build into next year. The Reserves are still in the Junior Cup following a good win vs Hempnall last week and now face in the next round next Sat 24th April. They are also in the Norfolk FA / Offside Trust Junior Knockout competition, and started that with a 1-1 draw against local rivals . Further games against Belton and AC Mill Lane will give the new management team a little time to review their player options as they look to build for the 21-22 season. In addition to Travis leaving—a number of players have also left to follow Trav to Yarmouth United and we wish them all the best and hope it gives them what they are looking for—but Paul/Dan have been quick to act bringing back some familiar faces from their U18s time together and look set top build a fantastic young squad with significant future potential. In the 20-21 season 9 of this and last season u18s have been selected to play within the 1st Team set up through the year. 4 Reserves players are in the squad for todays game vs Sheringham following impres- sive recent performances. The pathway we are trying to create is real and there are a number of players within their squad ex- pected to make 1st team appearances in the 21-22 season for sure. As for the reserves, it remains to be seen which league they will be in. While football was curtailed, there is to be movement from Step 7 to 6 (Ang Comb to Thurlow Nunn) which will mean Promotion oppor- tunities for the lower Anglian combination leagues - Depending on the local movement there is an outside chance the Reserves may be promoted on a PPG basis into Division 2—but it remains to be seen what is decided in the coming months—whatever happens next season looks very exciting for this group of play- ers and the future of the club.

BLOATERS DENT HARES PROMOTION CHARGE

The lockdown has been kind to the Bloaters with many of the squad returning after injury. Howell , Barnes, George and Smith returned to the side to join recent new recruits Kyle Baker, Aaron Attree and Connor Delaney. However the injury list was still active with Ager, Forbes, Belsten and Jordan Attree all unavailable for this game, against a side that have only lost once all season to a strong Lakenheath side. March Town were missing a few familiar faces themselves and came to the game knowing a win would see them climb to the top of the table. This was the return of the first fixture of the season where a late penalty by the hosts saw them grab all three points in a competitive encoun- ter.

The game began with the visitors showing some early intent as they took the game to the Bloaters in an early spell of possession. After a barrage of corners Warren fired over from twenty yards and Gillies had the ball in the net, but was ruled out for offside in the seventh minute. The home side were frus- trated by the well-drilled offside trap and were guilty of getting caught offside more than they should, as their swift attacks were brought to an untimely end by the assistant’s flag. In the fourteenth minute a claim for a penalty was ignored by referee Amsiejus and George launched the ball into the visitors’ half. Sensing an opportunity, Kyle Baker pressurised the defender into heading the ball straight up in the air and with one deft touch had taken the ball behind the visitors defence and then cut inside be- fore firing an unstoppable shot past Congreve to give the hosts the lead with a well-taken finish on his home debut. The home side could have doubled their lead moments later when Baker’s shot was deflected over for a corner. A couple of minutes later they did double the lead. McCombe’s corner was returned to the youngster and his deep cross was misjudged by Congreve and found the head of Cameron Barnes who headed home from close range, although he didn’t appear to know much about it, as the hosts took a two goal lead after eighteen minutes against their high-flying opponents.

The lead was reduced in the twenty sixth minute as first Putnins made a great save from a free-kick and then Howell blocked the ball on the line but Short was on hand to bundle the ball home from close-range to give the visitors a much-needed boost. A couple of over-zealous challenges from the visitors earned yellow cards and a nasty injury to full-back Atkins who had to leave the pitch, to be replaced by Josh Ford. Urry reverted to right back and Ford took his place alongside Howell at centre back. Gillies fired in a shot that Putnins saved well as the visitors looked to get on level terms just be- fore half-time, but the scoreline remained.

HT Great Yarmouth Town 2 March Town United 1

The visitors had the first chance of the second half as the lively Warren sent in a dangerous cross that missed everyone in the penalty area

10 www.greatyarmouthtownfc.org.uk

The visitors desperate for the three points were relying on a high line to keep the hosts at bay to some good effect. That was until Attree and McCombe foiled a Hares attack and young McCombe side -stepped a couple of challenges before sliding in an excellent ball behind the defensive line, into Jamie Smith who kept his composure to stay onside and fire a shot past Congreve to put the home side 3-1 up on fifty one minutes.

Connor Delaney came on for his debut to replace Attree and showed a couple of neat touches to regain possession for the Bloaters. The visitors responded by sending on a couple of substitutes notably striker Jack Friend who always seems to score against the Bloaters, although looking at his goalscoring record it looks he seems to score against everyone. The visitors were now looking men- acing with three strikers on the pitch ably supplied by the impressive McQuaid and Gibson. The visitors were now in the ascendency, but the back four of Urry, McAvoy, Howell and Ford stood up . well to the challenge. When the visitors did find space for an attempt on goal they found home keeper Putnins in fine form. With the visitors committing numbers forwards it left the inevitable spaces in defence and good play by Delany sent Smith through on goal and he thought he had ex- tended the lead when he broke through, but his shot past Congreve drifted narrowly past the post to deny the big striker a fourth for the Bloaters. Dan Pinheiro came onto replace Barnes who had put in a good shift for his side. Putnins made a terrific save from Friend and a flurry of corners were repelled by a determined home defence. Smith then had another chance to score as the hosts counter-attacked again, but once again the ball went agonisingly past the upright.

With the clock ticking down Putnins pulled off two fine saves as the visitors piled forwards. Howev- er this was the Bloaters day as they managed the game out to a conclusion to avenge the 2-1 de- feat in Cambridgeshire on the opening fixture of the season, and put a sizeable dent in the Hares’ promotion challenge. In this topsy-turvy season there are lots of games left and there are several good teams challenging at the top of the division, all of whom will be thinking they are in with a good shout for promotion. It was only two games ago the Bloaters suffered a humiliating 6-0 de- feat at Downham, but with players back from injury and new signings coming in, this looks like a turning point in the Bloaters’ season and hopefully a return to their early-season form.

A delighted Bloaters manager Rob McCombe concluded “Really pleased with the lads today both on and off the ball. Their attitude and application was spot on, and executed the game plan perfect- ly. Our response in the last two games has been fantastic and shows the group what they are capa- ble of.” ATT 102 2 1 Elvijs Putnins (c) 5 4 2 Harry Atkins 3 Will George 7 3 4 Kyle Howell 6 5 Ray Urry 6 Cam Barnes 11 10 7 Aaron Attree 8 4 8 Kieran McCombe 9 Kyle Baker 9 10 Dec McAcvoy 11 Will George 12 Dan Pinheiro 14 Connor Delaney 11 Www.greatyarmouthtownfc.org.uk MARCH HOME- In picture...

@The_Bloaters 15 THE BLOATERS LONG HISTORY IN BRIEF

Great Yarmouth Town Football Club was formed in 1897 with most of the players being drawn from two very successful local clubs, Yarmouth Fearnoughts and Yarmouth Royal Artillery, who between them had won the Norfolk Senior Cup for the previous four years. The players' experience obviously told as the new Town club won this trophy in its very first year, defeating Lynn Town 4-3 in a replay after a 0-0 draw. Then, between 1902 and 1906, Yarmouth were to prove invincible in the same competition, again beat- ing Lynn on each occasion! In total, Yarmouth have won the Senior Cup thirteen times and have been runners-up a further fifteen times. Founder-members of the Norfolk & League, Yarmouth won this championship in 1914, 1927 and 1928 before joining the newly formed Eastern Counties League in 1935; they have been ever-present members since, and are now the only club to hold this distinction following Lowes- toft Town's elevation to the Ryman League. During this period Gordon South was smashing in the goals accumulating 298 in a 28 year spell. He is still the all-time highest scorer today. After the Second World War, the Bloaters - now with semi-professional status - gained national recognition for their FA Cup exploits, reaching the second-round proper twice! The first-round proper was reached for the first time in 1947 when they lost at home to Shrewsbury Town in front of 4160 spectators. Then in 1952 a Wellesley crowd of 3889 witnessed a first-round proper 1-0 win over Guildford City, but a 1-4 home defeat to Wrexham in the second round (crowd 6963, a new record) dealt that season's exit; in 1953 the Bloaters' finest hour saw them defeat League side Crystal Palace 1-0 in the first-round proper in front of a still-record crowd of 8944! Second-round exit came at then-League club Barrow, 2-4. Other cup exploits over the years include eight appearances in the first round proper of the old Amateur Cup, and one in the second round. In 1952 the East Anglian Cup was won for the only time, and - on what we night term the "domestic front' - the Eastern Counties League Cup has been won three times to date, in 1938, 1975 and 1981. The late fifties saw a return to strictly amateur status but it was not long before a revival of fortunes saw paid players return and with them, finally, the ECL title in season 1968-69; however, this remains the sole occasion so far. Ex-Norwich, Newcastle and Sheffield United winger Bill Punton then took the reigns for what proved to be a 21-year spell, mak- ing him the longest-serving manager of the club. This was also one of the club's most successful periods: although the league title proved elusive Punton led the Bloaters to two runners-up spots, four Senior Cup triumphs, the two League Cup wins of '75 and '81, and to within one goal of Wembley in the FA Vase in 1983. Then, as the first ECL club to get that far, Yarmouth lost on aggregate to eventual winners VS Rugby in the semi-final, despite a phenomenal goal by prolific striker Neil Hart - a Yarmouth legend - to set up a tense extra-time period in the second leg at the Wellesley in front of another, but now rare, 4000plus gate, the first since those heady days of the fifties. It was in the It was in the last season of Punton's tenure that he introduced a young Paul Tong to his managerial team but 1990 was a year of change with both Punton and Tong moving on to Diss Town and long-serving club official Jack Pegg retiring.

16 www.greatyarmouthtownfc.org.uk The club experienced a dip in fortunes in the early nineties until Paul Chick and Donny Pye were appointed, but after two moderately successful seasons this pair also moved to Diss when Punton retired from management. Ironically, Tong then returned to the Wellesley as first team boss and stayed seven years, making him the second-longest serving manager after Punton. In this period the club revived its Youth U18 side and this has been, and continues to be, a successful breeding ground for new talent. During this first managerial spell at Yarmouth for Tong, the club won the ECL Millennium Trophy, one year after being runner-up, and reached three consecutive Senior Cup finals though disappoint- ingly losing all three. After Tong left for a second time, the club suf- fered relegation to the First Division in 2005 and a period of short- lived appointments concluded with appearance record-breaking goalkeeper Nick Banham who formed a unique partnership at the club with his wife Julia as Chairperson.

With the club then heading for financial meltdown in late 2008, an appeal for help in the local media resulted in local businessman Stephen Brierley assisting in the resurrection. When Banham resigned as first team manager, Yarmouth stalwart Kevin Cruickshank stepped up to the plate and was then joined by the returning Paul Tong, and the pair set about rebuilding the team side of affairs at the Wellesley. After a difference of opinion, the pairing broke up and Tong remained as sole manager, taking the club back to the Premier Division as Ridgeon's Division One 2009-2010 champions and achieve a first-ever promotion for the Bloaters. And happily, with relations now restored, Cruickshank returned to the Wellesley as Reserve team manager. However the fortunes were short lived with the side relegated in 2010-11 which is where they stayed for 5 years. The brighter side of 2010 also saw the club awarded Charter Club status by the FA, and expansion of the youth programme saw the club running a number of youth sides. This has grown in statue and the club now boast at least 10 youth sides of both boys and girls. In 2011-12 due to poor committee management the club again hit severe financial problems, which almost ruined the club to extinction but recent times have seen a dramatic change in fortunes. In 2014-15 Yarmouth almost gained promotion back to the Premier league but just fell short in 4th and in the same season where runners up in the ECL 1st Division cup, beaten by Sudbury and Woodbridge. 2015-16 with the outgoing manager leaving for fierce rivals and neighbours Gorleston and taking half of his successful squad with him Great Yarmouth Town appointed 2 young managers in Adam Mason & Martyn Sinclair on the back of their local football success. The pair gained promotion in that season at the first time of asking to return the club to the Eastern Counties Premier League (step 5). In a very positive new era for the club there have also been off the field improvements. Chairman Kevin Cruickshank who has had over 25 years associa- tion with the club in various roles along with Ben Stone as new vice chairman were appointed in February 2017 in a restructure of the management committee. In 2019 It was all change with Jack Jay Coming into a new look committee as Chairman, following Adam Mason and Martyn Sinclair stepping down as Managers, replaced by Rob McCombe. ‘Mase’ and ‘Sinny’ subsequently taking important positions on the Committee with Adam Mason taking on an ‘Operations Director’ Role, and Martyn Sinclair coming in as the clubs Vice Chair- man. The new committee fully committed to securing the long term sustainable future of the club, aligned to its core values and philosophy.

In last weekends Draw the AWAY SHIRT SPONSORSHIP was won by a group of local supporters under the banner of The Yarmouth Yellows "Yarmouth Yellows" are an informal group of football supporters that have been together for getting on 30 years. Originally formed as a group of Norwich City fans based in the Great Yarmouth area, in recent years they have been regular attendees at the Wellesley to also support their home town team. They try not to take life too seriously and reflect this when attending matches, in fact while everyone enjoys a good win on the pitch, their motto is "don't let the football spoil the day". When attending on match days you can usually find them at the bar, keenly contributing to club funds. 30 2020/21 FIRST TEAM STATS
