Ingenuity is at work. But suddenly you touch my heart, you do me good. I am happy and I say : ‘This is beautiful.’ That is architecture. Art enters in.” Vers une architecture, Le Corbusier, ed. G. Crès, 1923 High in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland, a few kilometers east of France, is perched the small town of La Chaux-de-Fonds — for centuries the wellspring of an almost divine congruence of genius. Among those born here : Le Corbusier (born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret), one of the greatest names in modern architecture and design; pioneering automaker Louis Chevrolet; and poet/novelist Blaise Cendrars. The aesthetic movement L’Art nouveau was refined in La Chaux-de-Fonds — as the old village gave way to a modern city beginning of the 20th century, a regional Art nouveau variant, the “Style Sapin”, emerged here, exclusive to the burgeoning industrial watchmaking centre. And the grace of its architecture and ingenuity of its urban plan have led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site. 6 7 The genius inherent to La Chaux-de-Fonds is today best exemplified by the watchmakers of Girard-Perregaux, who - in cooperation with Foundation Le Corbusier - are employing gold, sapphire crystal, steel and even concrete to reinterpret the work of the great Modernist in a series of exceptional new timepieces. This sublime project is the apotheosis of more than a century of communal history between the Jeanneret and Girard-Perregaux families. Mere happenstance? Hardly. It is, rather, serendipity at its most poignant — the seemingly inevitable result when genius takes up residence in close proximity to genius. The very essence, in other words, of La Chaux-de-Fonds. Le Corbusier’s life took him well beyond the shadow of the Jura, of course; he traveled the world designing buildings — and, in some cases, entire cities. Fittingly, he was part of the multinational team of architects that designed the headquarters of the United Nations Secretariat Building in Manhattan — a metaphor, in glass, reinforced concrete and steel, for his own global citizenship. The Girard-Perregaux Le Corbusier Trilogy, however, reflects the three places that most embodied the concept of home to the man himself, who once observed that “the home should be the treasure chest of living” : La Chaux-de-Fonds, Paris and Marseille. The model selected by Girard-Perregaux for the basis of the Le Corbusier Trilogy is the Vintage 1945, the year Le Corbusier published one of his most famous works, Les Trois Etablissements Humains (The Three Human Establishments) and devised his anthropometric scale of proportions the Modulor. © FLC - ProLitteris 8 9 110 11 Vintage 1945 LE CORBUSIER LA CHAUX-DE-FONDS CASE Material : Pink gold In a marvelous coincidence, Charles-Edouard Jeanneret’s hometown, Dimensions : 36.20 x 35.25 mm La Chaux-de-Fonds, happens to be the world capital of watchmaking. • Exposition : Le Corbusier Et La Question Du Brutalisme

  • The Architecture of Le Corbusier and Herzog and De Meuron
Traveling Studio Proposal - Spring 2018 Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning PARALLEL FACADES _ The Architecture of Le Corbusier and Herzog and De Meuron Instructor: Viola Ago Course Brief_ This travel course will take students through a trace of significant Architecture work by Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, known as Le Corbusier, and the duo Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron of Herzog and De Meuron (from now on HDM). This course will travel through three countries where most of the work in concentrated, Germany, Switzerland, and France. The curated list of buildings and sites has been constructed based on the utility of the façade in architecture. Both of these practices have been powerful influencers of architectural style. Le Corbusier was elementary to the emergence of Modernism and the removal of decorative arts in architecture. HDM were equally as fundamental in the evolution of Contemporary style and aesthetics in Architecture. Both contributors have used the Architectural Façade to express their aesthetic convictions and ideologies. This traveling studio will examine the Architectural Façade of Modern and Contemporary Architecture as it relates to three areas of investigation: art, technology, and agency. The visits to the sites, buildings, and collection based museums, will guide the students to collect information and knowledge on this critical part of history. The students will use the reading list as a guide to understand the current conditions of the Architectural Façade, and as a framework to inform the way in which to study the buildings that they will visit during this trip. Activity_ Traveling to sites, visiting buildings, visiting galleries, photography/sketching, taking notes, workshop participation.

  • Vernacular Serbia Traced by Jeanneret, Yugoslav Modern Figured À La Corbusier
DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/LC2015.2015.565 Vernacular Serbia Traced by Jeanneret, Yugoslav Modern Figured à la Corbusier Lj. Blagojević University of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture Abstract: The paper examines correlations of architectural culture in Serbia with modern ideas of the twentieth century that were engendered through engagement with concepts originated by Le Corbusier. Based on analysis of primary sources, the paper examines the dichotomy vernacular – modern as a critical point of this correlation. For instance, what was the significance of vernacular or folklore heritage, that Charles-Édouard Jeanneret traced in Serbia in 1911, and how did its value became part of the foundational discourse of the modern movement? What kind of relation to Le Corbusier’s doctrines were forged by modern architects in Serbia of the interwar years, and which lessons learned in his Parisian atelier by collaborators from the late 1930s had been transmitted far and wide in socialist Yugoslavia’s urban planning? This paper focuses on comparative analysis of direct material evidence of sources on the one side and interpretations on the other, with the aim to show more clearly a two-way working of sources, reception and selective transmission through architectural thinking and design process. In sum, the argumentation will aim to elucidate the processes of acknowledgment, emulation, idealization, analytical probing, dogmatization, critique and annihilation of Le Corbusier’s ideas in the long march of modernism’s emancipation and decline in Serbia over the course of the twentieth century.
