David Jackson DEPARTMENT OF SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE <[email protected]> Cell 203-809-7422 Taught in English, readings in translation Description and Overview of Course Online course that is an introduction and study of contemporary Brazilian fiction. We will read seven short novels from Clarice Lispector to the present, touching on the condition of workers and women, memory, identity, and family life, Brazil’s diverse cities and regions and social values. Prerequisite: None. One credit. HU, WR. Session B, July 12- Aug 11. Course Check-In Each student should check in with me during the first week of the course via Zoom. This will give me an opportunity to meet you. We will arrange a time prior to the first meeting. Daily assignments. Please complete the readings in advance for each week This course meets MW 1-4:15pm. Please leave your camera on and be prepared to participate. Requirements -Class participation (20%). -Weekly 1-2 pp. written analyses based of the novel to be discussed, due before class (30%). -Written developed description of proposed paper topic plus outline (end of third week) (10%). -Final paper (10-12 pages) (40%) due last day of class. The final paper draws on secondary sources to support your main idea. 2 Format: Classes will consist of mini-presentations by the instructor followed by discussion and questions.
