HIS BEATITUDE LUBOMYR HUSAR HAS DIED ПОМЕР БЛАЖЕННІШИЙ ЛЮБОМИР His Beatitude Lubomyr Husar reposed in the Lord today, May 31, 2017 at 10:30 AM Winnipeg time. He was a highly respected Priest, Bishop and Cardinal, as well as teacher, pastor and monk and, for the last while in a troubled country – a voice of reason and vision for countless people throughout Ukraine. He was born in Lviv, Ukraine in 1933 and died near Kyiv, Ukraine in the village Knyazhychi May 31, 2017. In between those years his life took an extraordinary path. In 1944 he fled with his family to Austria then to the United States. In the US he eventually discerned a vocation to the priesthood and after years of study, was ordained a priest by then Bishop of Stamford Ambrose Senyshyn in 1958. After years of pastoral work and teaching, he chose to enter the Monastery of the Studite Monks in 1973. He gained the trust of the Confessor of the Faith, Patriarch Josyf Slipyj who secretly consecrated him a Bishop in 1976 that, when the time would come, he might serve the Church in the underground of Soviet-occupied Ukraine. From at least 1996 his episcopal status was openly recognized and he served as a plenipoteniary auxiliary to the head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church Cardinal Myroslav-Ivan Lubachivsky whose health was preventing him from fully leading the Church. After Cardinal Lubachewsky died in 2000, He served a short while as Administrator until the Ukrainian Catholic Synod of Bishops elected him as the head of the Church on January 25, 2001. The following day, January 26th, it was confirmed that he was named Cardinal-priest by Pope St. John Paul II. He served for a decade as the Head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church travelling to all the eparchies around the world – including Winnipeg. When he felt that his health and especially his loss of sight hampered him in his duties, he requested resignation which was accepted February 10, 2011, necessitating an extraordinary Synod of Bishops that was convened to choose his successor. His Beatitude Sviatoslav (Shevchuk) was chosen to succeed Lubomyr and his election was confirmed March 25, 2011. Cardinal Husar’s popularity never waned in Ukraine and his opinion was sought by many on many issues. He saw the country through two revolutions – the “Orange” in 2004 and that of “Dignity” in 2014. It was in his time that the See of the Major Archbishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Church returned to the capital city of Kyiv and that the construction of the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Resurrection began there. He will be missed and his memory honoured by many. The funeral services will be announced shortly. Вічная Пам’ять Eternal Memory PARISH BUILT ON WELCOMING SPIRIT CHERYL GIRARDO -Article reprinted from Winnipeg Free Press May, 20, 2017 PERHAPS you have passed by and wondered at the grand building at 1001 Grant Ave. It certainly stands out from the other buildings surrounding it. The striking contemporary looking Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church was built in 1963. Its priest has only been here a short while, but the parish history dates back to 1932. Father |John Mostivsky, 60, who started at the parish last year, was born in Ukraine and speaks 10 languages. He has been a priest for 32 years, he says, and served for 18 years at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in St. Boniface before moving to Holy Family. “There are about 160 families in this parish with lots of children and young families,” Mostivisky says. The church welcomes all nationalities. “We are not all Ukrainian. We are inviting all people who are looking for finding meaning and purpose here on Earth and where we are going after our physical death. Jesus Christ is love and He will show you everything.” Many Ukrainian families settled in the Fort Rouge neighbourhood in the early 1900s. But there was no Ukrainian Catholic church nearby and few families owned cars. After holding services in the Kobzar Hall on Lilac Street and Lorette Avenue from 1932 to 1935, and after much fundraising, a wooden-frame church with three domes was built on property near the hall in 1935. By 1960, the parish was in need of a larger church and a new fundraising campaign began. Radoslav Zuk was the architect hired to come up with a modern design that would appeal to young families. The beautiful and contemporary building with the three large arched towers was the result. Walter Dubowec, a parishioner who had been a member since childhood, recalled at the church’s 75th anniversary that “all agreed the design was unique and absolutely stunning.” The new church would seat more than 300. Today, people come to Holy Family from all around Winnipeg, Mostivsky says. Looking outward the three modernistic blue and gold mosaics in the altar area created by Winnipeg artist Roman Kowal. One is of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one of the Holy Family and one is of the Resurrection, he explains. “Church is people,” Mostivsky says. “Without people, it’s only a building. It is a hospital for spiritual and emotional healing. We come here to heal our internal wounds. We have excellent dresses, cars, etc, but what is going on inside? Church helps us to balance our lives, internally and externally.” SUNDAY’S COLLECTION 9:00 AM DIVINE LITURGY Мау 28, 2017 June 4 June 11 Marianne Sunday Envelopes (52) $1,325 Rosary Paulette Terrick Derkach Loose Cash $33.25 Alice Evelyn Melnyk Visitors $37 Greeters Michalczuk Stella Hyska Candle Offering $11.50 Marie Stefanik Nicholas Epistle Sasha Tataryn Щиро Вам дякуємо!
