Official Publication of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia VOL. 77 - No. 11 MAY 29, 2016 ENGLISH VERSION Day of Vocations in Cherry Hill, NJ Pentecost Sunday, May 15, 2016 was designated as a Day of Vocations for the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia. Fr. Paul Makar, Director of Vocations at the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia, and rector of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Cherry Hill, NJ, spoke about vocations during the Divine Liturgy in Cherry Hill, NJ. Fr. Makar said how it was good that the Day of Vocations fell on Pentecost Sunday because the Holy Spirit descends upon us and communicates with us. Fr. Makar urged everyone For more information on Vocations please visit the to open their hearts to His Vocations Website at www.ukrainiancatholicvocations.com call. The relocation of Archeparchy offices has begun. The goal is to more efficiently use our existing buildings thereby freeing the excess space for realizing rental income to help pay increasing costs of the Archeparchy. There have been no increases levied on the parishes to cover increasing costs in the past twelve years. Additional income is needed to cover rising costs of programs to avoid adding additional burdens on parishes. The Cathedral Rectory has already relocated into the former convent next to the Cathedral. Some needed renovation work has been done, and central air conditioning is to be installed The “Treasury of Faith” Museum will be relocated to the shortly. Large rooms are being Cathedral Basement. Fr. Roman Sverdan shows Mother built in the Cathedral basement Evhenia, MSMG and Sr. Timothea, MSMG the area in the to accommodate the ‘Treasury of basement where the museum will be located. (Photo: Teresa Faith’ Museum and the Chancery Siwak) Library. The space is ideal for these uses. It is anticipated that the museum and library will move into the new location in June. Some cosmetic work will be done in the existing school building where the museum was previously located. A telephone and internet service also needs to be installed. Then, the Chancery offices will move into the former school building on the Cathedral grounds. A major cost will be the installation of an elevator to be located between the former convent and school, thus enabling it to serve both buildings and allowing for required handicapped access. We are presently preparing for construction anticipated to begin in August. The former Cathedral rectory has been prepared for rental, and the present Chancery facilities will be ready before winter. A realtor has been engaged to begin to advertise and search for suitable renters for the entire Chancery and Rectory facility located across from the Cathedral. The Residence for the Archbishop will remain as is. To date, approximately 20% of what is needed to cover costs has been donated by generous benefactors. We need your help to achieve that which we feel is necessary to meet increasing costs. We simply will (continued on next page) MAY 29, 2016 2 RELOCATION OF ARCHEPARCHY FACILITIES HAS BEGUN (continued from previous page) use less to accomplish the same tasks, and become more efficient. Our heartfelt gratitude is offered to all who have generously responded to date to enable this transition. God bless you for your generosity and for your encouragement! Thank you! Museum Chancery Library MAY 29, 2016 3 CHRIST – THE LOVER OF MANKIND Is not “The Lover of Mankind” (philantropos in Greek) the best phrase to describe Christ our Lord in the Eastern Liturgies? This descriptive phrase resounds in the Armenian, Ethiopian, Greek, Malabar, and Maronite, Melkite, Ukrainian, Ruthenian, and Russian Liturgies. We find this phrase in the liturgical books of the Eastern Churches, both Catholic and Orthodox. In how many different traditions, we encounter this phrase in the ancient books and in various translations (languages). The phrases “Lover of Mankind,” “Friend of the People,” “Benevolent God,” “Loving Lord,” “Merciful God and Lover of Mankind,” and others are but individual similar expressions of the same thought in the present- day translations of liturgical books and prayer books. Even though we hear this thought expressed every time during the Divine Liturgy of the Eastern Churches, we often encounter this too in the West. In the Latin-rite, for example, they are expressed in the Lenten prayer of the Liturgy for the unity of Christians, in the breviary, and several other places. Thus, this expression is a part of the general heritage of the East, and thereby one of its gifts to the West. Translation of https://issuu.com/mykolaslotvinskyy/docs/_ During the Divine Liturgy, the priest prays: “For You are a good and loving God (the Lover of Mankind)” and again: “For You are a merciful and loving God (Lover of Mankind). After the consecration of the gifts, the priest prays: “That our loving God (God the Lover of Mankind) Who has received them (the precious Gifts) as a spiritual fragrance upon His holy, heavenly, and mystical altar, may send down upon us in return His divine grace and gift of the Holy Spirit, let us pray.” During the month of June, our Ukrainian Catholic Church has special prayers to Christ, the Lover of Mankind. In the Akafist prayer service, we call Jesus by various titles: O most sweet Jesus, You are the praise of the Patriarchs, O most wondrous Jesus, You are the strength for the martyrs. O most serene Jesus, You are the joy for the monks. O most sweet Jesus, You are a pleasure for the pious. O Eternal Jesus, You are salvation for sinners. Truly we Ukrainian Catholics pray and praise the Lord God as the Lover of Mankind. - Rev. D. MAY 29, 2016 7 Children’s Liturgy in Maizeville On Sunday, May 8, Mother’s Day, St John’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Maizeville, celebrated a Children Liturgy, where Rev. Roman Pitula offered the homily for the children of the parish. A CHILDREN’S LITURGY IN EVERY PARISH DURING MAY During the recent conference of clergy of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia, our clergy favorably embraced the proposal of each priest offering a homily directed at children in every parish at least once during the month of May, 2016. The priest is to offer the homily regardless of the number of children which might be present. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to ensure the presence of their children, who will gather around the priest as he speaks with them offering his reflection and teaching. We are hopeful that such children’s liturgies would become a regular occurrence within all of our parishes. Please assist and support your pastor in this endeavor. This is to occur in every parish. We are grateful for the willingness of our Rev. Roman Pitula in pastors to reach out to the youngest amidst us.
