Your financial help is needed to progress!

The relocation of Archeparchy offices has begun. The goal is to more efficiently use our existing buildings thereby freeing the excess space for realizing rental income to help pay increasing costs of the Archeparchy. There have been no increases levied on the parishes to cover increasing costs in the past twelve years. Additional income is needed to cover rising costs of programs to avoid adding additional burdens on parishes.

The Cathedral Rectory has already relocated into the former convent next to the Cathedral. Some needed renovation work has been done, and central air conditioning is to be installed The “Treasury of Faith” Museum will be relocated to the shortly. Large rooms are being Cathedral Basement. Fr. Roman Sverdan shows Mother built in the Cathedral basement Evhenia, MSMG and Sr. Timothea, MSMG the area in the to accommodate the ‘Treasury of basement where the museum will be located. (Photo: Teresa Faith’ Museum and the Chancery Siwak) Library. The space is ideal for these uses. It is anticipated that the museum and library will move into the new location in June. Some cosmetic work will be done in the existing school building where the museum was previously located. A telephone and internet service also needs to be installed. Then, the Chancery offices will move into the former school building on the Cathedral grounds.

A major cost will be the installation of an elevator to be located between the former convent and school, thus enabling it to serve both buildings and allowing for required handicapped access. We are presently preparing for construction anticipated to begin in August.

The former Cathedral rectory has been prepared for rental, and the present Chancery facilities will be ready before winter. A realtor has been engaged to begin to advertise and search for suitable renters for the entire Chancery and Rectory facility located across from the Cathedral. The Residence for the Archbishop will remain as is.

To date, approximately 20% of what is needed to cover costs has been donated by generous benefactors. We need your help to achieve that which we feel is necessary to meet increasing costs. We simply will

Our heartfelt gratitude is offered to all who have generously responded to date to enable this transition. God bless you for your generosity and for your encouragement! Thank you!

Is not “The Lover of Mankind” (philantropos in Greek) the best phrase to describe Christ our Lord in the Eastern Liturgies? This descriptive phrase resounds in the Armenian, Ethiopian, Greek, Malabar, and Maronite, Melkite, Ukrainian, Ruthenian, and Russian Liturgies. We find this phrase in the liturgical books of the Eastern Churches, both Catholic and Orthodox. In how many different traditions, we encounter this phrase in the ancient books and in various translations (languages).

The phrases “Lover of Mankind,” “Friend of the People,” “Benevolent God,” “Loving Lord,” “Merciful God and Lover of Mankind,” and others are but individual similar expressions of the same thought in the present- day translations of liturgical books and prayer books. Even though we hear this thought expressed every time during the Divine Liturgy of the Eastern Churches, we often encounter this too in the West. In the Latin-rite, for example, they are expressed in the Lenten prayer of the Liturgy for the unity of Christians, in the breviary, and several other places. Thus, this expression is a part of the general heritage of the East, and thereby one of its gifts to the West.

Translation of https://issuu.com/mykolaslotvinskyy/docs/_

During the Divine Liturgy, the priest prays: “For You are a good and loving God (the Lover of Mankind)” and again: “For You are a merciful and loving God (Lover of Mankind). After the consecration of the gifts, the priest prays: “That our loving God (God the Lover of Mankind) Who has received them (the precious Gifts) as a spiritual fragrance upon His holy, heavenly, and mystical altar, may send down upon us in return His divine grace and gift of the Holy Spirit, let us pray.”

During the month of June, our Ukrainian Catholic Church has special prayers to Christ, the Lover of Mankind. In the Akafist prayer service, we call Jesus by various titles: O most sweet Jesus, You are the praise of the Patriarchs, O most wondrous Jesus, You are the strength for the martyrs. O most serene Jesus, You are the joy for the monks. O most sweet Jesus, You are a pleasure for the pious. O Eternal Jesus, You are salvation for sinners.

Truly we Ukrainian Catholics pray and praise the Lord God as the Lover of Mankind.

- Rev. D. George Worschak

MAY 29, 2016 7 Children’s Liturgy in Maizeville

On Sunday, May 8, Mother’s Day, St John’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Maizeville, celebrated a Children Liturgy, where Rev. Roman Pitula offered the homily for the children of the parish.

A CHILDREN’S LITURGY IN EVERY PARISH DURING MAY

During the recent conference of clergy of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia, our clergy favorably embraced the proposal of each priest offering a homily directed at children in every parish at least once during the month of May, 2016. The priest is to offer the homily regardless of the number of children which might be present. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to ensure the presence of their children, who will gather around the priest as he speaks with them offering his reflection and teaching. We are hopeful that such children’s liturgies would become a regular occurrence within all of our parishes. Please assist and support your pastor in this endeavor. This is to occur in every parish. We are grateful for the willingness of our Rev. Roman Pitula in pastors to reach out to the youngest amidst us. Maizeville, PA.

Pentecost Sunday was celebrated at Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church in Nanticoke, PA on Sunday, May 15, 2016.

Pentecost commemorates the visible descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of “parted tongues of fire” upon the Apostles as they were instructed to preach the Gospel to all nations. Pentecost is also known as “Green Holyday” of “Zeleni Sviata.” The tradition of adorning the church both inside and out with tender green leaves honors the birth of the life-giving church.

Father Volodymyr Popyk explained the relevance Father Volodymyr Popyk and importance of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives. “Tsaryu Nebesniy” was sung by the choir during the Divine Liturgy. Petitions to the Mother of God concluded the service. Myrovania followed.

MAY 29, 2016 10 St. Michael religious teacher retires after 34 years

BY JOHN E. USALIS May 16, 2016

SHENANDOAH - Parishioner Alice Breznik, has been educating children in their Catholic faith at St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church, Shenandoah, PA for the past 34 years, but has decided to step down to allow others to take on the important role in future years.

Religion class students receiving first confession: Kyla Elizabeth Carado, Sean Foley, Gianna Danielle Perri- Detore and Destiny Ray Green lined up in front of the iconostasis — icon wall — for photos with Monsignor Myron Grabowsky, pastor, and while there, Grabowsky announced the retirement of Breznik, who was brought to tears when he thanked her for the work she did educating the children in the faith. Grabowsky called her up and presented Breznik with a bouquet of red roses and asked her to stay for photos with her last religion class.

“She has been a help to the parish, especially to the children,” Grabowsky said. “She helped give them a love for God that they need, and especially bring to them the awareness of who they are in Christ. That really is the basic thing that she taught untiringly. If it wasn’t for her, how many children would not have been instructed, and that is something that she dedicated her life to instructing the children and bringing them closer to the Lord. Her love of the Lord is manifested to the children.”

On May 15th, thirteen children received their Sacrament of First Holy Penance and their Solemn Communion at St. Nicholas Ukrainian CatholicChurch, Passaic, NJ. It was a joy to all of us to welcome them fully in these sacraments and be part of their celebration. We congratulate them and their families. May Jesus bless each and every one of them, always protecting, guiding and helping them to form their hearts as His.

On May 5th, St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic School Students and staff had a May crowing procession. This year’s May crowing was a little different. SNUCS Students crowned the Blessed Mother with hearts. On theses hearts they wrote or drew something that would represent the desires of their hearts, prayers of gratitude, offerings and petitions. It was a very prayerful moment of procession.

On May 5th, three girls from 3rd Grade were blessed as Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We congratulate them and pray asking the Blessed Mother to bless them and their families. MAY 29, 2016 12 Emma Pace Served as May Queen at Scranton’s St. Vladimir Church

On Sunday, May 8, 2016, Emma Rose Pace, daughter of Steven and Donna Trach Pace, was selected as May Queen and given the honor of placing a bouquet of flowers at the Icon of Our Blessed Mother. She made the presentation immediately before the 10:30am Divine Liturgy which coincided with Mother’s Day. Father Myron Myronyuk is pastor and currently her religious education teacher is Dr. Helen “Olenka” Chandoha. Emma has been attending Religious Education classes at St. Vladimir’s for the past three years.

Emma’s maternal great grandparents, Harry and Mary Trach, were founders of the parish and gifted the “new” church in 1932, which replaced the original outgrown edifice, with a magnificent stained glass window depicting the Annunciation.

Emma and her parents appreciate very deeply their Greek Catholic faith and their Ukrainian heritage as passed down by their ancestors.

Deacon Paul Makar receives Master of Arts degree in Pastoral Ministry

Ten years ago Deacon Paul Makar of Assumption Church in Perth Amboy, NJ began studies at the Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ for a Masters degree in Pastoral Ministry. Unfortunately, his studies were interrupted as he was diagnosed with a condition and for several years he had problems walking. However, two years ago just before retiring he decided to visit the Seminary and see how many courses that... he would need to meet the 49 credits required to complete the program. He needed five course plus one unit of CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education).

On May 12th graduation ceremonies were held at the Archdiocese of Newark’s Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and Deacon Paul received a Master of Arts degree in Pastoral Ministry. This is Deacon Paul’s third Masters Degree. He has a MA in Dogmatic Theology, MBA in Marketing, and now MAPM.

Deacon Paul is very grateful for the graces that he received from our Lord God Savior Jesus Christ and guidance from the Holy Spirit during his scholastic journey. Also, for the support and encouragement that he received from his wife Anna, pastor Fr. Ivan Turyk, and oldest son Fr. Paul J. Makar enabled him to follow his dream and to make it come true. What’s next? He recently began volunteering as a Hospice chaplain.

Fr. Turyk, Deacon Markar, and Fr. Makar Congratulations Deacon Paul! Your accomplishment is well deserved! MAY 29, 2016 13

Pope greets Ukrainian children at Wednesday audience

May 18, 2016

(Vatican Radio) During this week’s general audience, Pope Francis extended a special greeting to a group of children from Ukraine, who had been brought to the Vatican by the international initiative Children for peace all over the world.

“I greet with special affection the children of Ukraine, orphans and refugees as a result of the armed conflict which still continues in the East of the country,” the Pope told the 80 children who were in St. Peter’s Square for the occasion.

“For the intercession of Mary Most Holy, I renew my prayer that we may strive for enduring peace, in order that it may relieve the so exhausted population, and offer a serene future for new generations.”

The Children for peace all over the world project aims to promote peace in the world – with a particular emphasis on Ukraine – through the use of maps which are then decorated with paper “world peace” doves, on which children write their wishes. The initiative was launched in Ukraine December 1, 2015, and was initiated by the Embassy of Hungary in Ukraine and the Honorary Consulate of Hungary in the Ivano-Frankivsk region.

Since its beginning in November, 2013, the conflict in Ukraine has forced more than a million into displacement, with hundreds of thousands of those affected being children.

In April, Pope Francis issued an appeal for peace in Ukraine, calling European churches to take up a collection for those affected by the conflict. Ukrainian religious leaders stand for independent and just judicial system

18 May 2016

The Ukrainian Council of Churches and religious organizations expressed readiness for dialogue and cooperation with the leaders and all the panel of judges of Ukraine for justice in the state based on the rule of law.

Religious leaders issued a joint appeal on establishment of justice in Ukraine at the meeting of the All- Ukraine Council of Churches, held on 17 May under the chairmanship of Senior Bishop Leonid Padun of the Ukrainian Christian Evangelical Church, the Institute of Religious Freedom reports.

“We urge Ukrainian judges to seek more justice in the norms of law, taking into account not only the letter but also the spirit of the law based on justice and r find more courage to separate from dishonest colleagues – from the persons whose action or inaction is incompatible with high position of a judge,” the AUCCRO statement goes. (continued from previous page) Meanwhile, Council of Churches denounced the radical actions of some leaders who “incite hatred and contempt of court, inciting people to commit openly illegal, and sometimes criminal, violent acts against judges.” According to religious leaders, such actions destroy the authority of the court and respect thereto, destroy faith in righteousness and justice which is the obstacle to judicial reform.

Before considering of the appeal, the meeting heard a judge of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Petro Stetsiuk who described the stages of the judicial system of Ukraine, the century-long history of modern Ukrainian judiciary, challenges and features of judicial reform.

Head of the UGCC Supreme Archbishop stressed the importance of consolidating efforts of the AUCCRO as one of the largest institutions of civil society in promoting dialogue and cooperation with the leadership of the judiciary and the judiciary as a whole to promote judicial reform, strengthening judicial independence and fair judiciary in Ukraine.

Assistant Chief Rabbi of Kyiv and Ukraine, Doctor of Law Gennady Bilorytskyy stressed the important role of judges in society, which is assigned to them in the Scriptures. “God’s will in this world is realized through justice, in consequence of which people say there is God in this world,” he stressed.

During the meeting, religious leaders also planned international events for this year. In particular, to strengthen the friendly Polish-Ukrainian relations, it was decided to carry out in the near future visit of the official delegation of the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations in the Republic of Poland to strengthen good neighborly relations and mutually beneficial relations between civil societies of Ukraine and Poland.

According to the Regulations, the AUCCRO presidency in the next six-month period has passed to the head of Evangelical Baptist Union of Ukraine Valery Antoniuk. http://risu.org.ua/en/index/all_news/state/legislation/63437
