Christmas Message from UCBC Spiritual Director – Eparchy of Saskatoon

God is for you!

ХРИСТОС РАЖДАЄТЬСЯ! Christmas is a time to celebrate that God loves you! СЛАВІТЕ ЙОГО! The entire reason for Christmas is the love of God. God loves us so much that he came to earth as a human so we could get to know him and learn to trust him and CHRIST IS BORN! love him back. God became one of us, a human being, LET US GRORIFY HIM! so we could understand what he is really like.

On the occasion of the Birth of Jesus Christ, we wish you

Rev. Fr. Janko Kolosnjaji a joyful and blessing Christmas and happy and prosper New Year. Although the Extraordinary Jubilee Year has concluded, we are still living in a “time of Mercy”. That was the Fr. Janko Kolosnjaji, message of Pope Francis in a lengthy Apostolic letter, Spiritual Director for the UCBC – Saskatoon Eparchy entitled Misericordia et Misere, (Mercy and Misery) issued on Monday following the close of the Year of Mercy.

Though the Jubilee is closed, Pope Francis said, “The door of mercy of our heart continues to remain wide open”. He called on the faithful to continue to practice new works of mercy, and to find new ways too give expression to the traditional works.

During our Phylipivka fast, Pope Francis encouraging us to enlarged the horizons of our hearts, to be surprized by the life that is presented each day with its newness.

To celebrate Christmas, the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, we should not just buy a big and expensive present for each other, but be filled with the biggest present – Jesus Christ himself.

His name shall be called Messenger of the great wisdom of God, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Master and Prince of Peace. We will not be walking in the darkness, because we expect to see a great light.

In today world it is very hard to accept peace, that Jesus L-R: Past President UCBC National, Bro. Glen Tymiak, KSV, receives is bringing. It is very hard to respect human dignity, his winning cheque from UCBC Eparchial Raffle Chairman, Bro. that Jesus brings to us as a child. Mike Kaminski, KSV. Photo courtesy of Bro. Mike Kaminski, KSV.

What is than the meaning of Christmas?

God loves you! God is with you!

The Parish was founded in 1916 when the first few Ukrainian families who settled in Dauphin, got together to celebrate a Divine Liturgy in one of the pioneer homes. Father N. Kryzhanowsky celebrated that first Liturgy. When more families arrived, the pioneers purchased an Anglican Church, remodeled it to the Eastern Rite and made it a home for their Parish.

As the membership grew so did the need for a more accommodating church and in 1936 the new Prairie Cathedral, designed by the renowned architect Father Philip Ruh, was opened on the same site as the first church. Through the years the church became overcrowded and lacked the amenities necessary for its near 600 members. It remained in operation until 1991 when the present church on Jackson Street was officially consecrated and a first Divine Liturgy celebrated on October 6 of that year. The 100 year anniversary of the parish began with a procession with the Honour Guard of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Clergy, Children, Altar Servers and banner and flag bearers proceeding to the main entrance. The Head of all Ukrainian Catholics in Canada, His Grace Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak was greeted with the traditional Ukrainian greeting of bread and salt; which were presented to His Grace by Shirley Novalkowsi, President of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League, and Bro. Ed Smaluk, KSV, President of the Ukrainian Catholic Brotherhood. The procession then proceeded to the Altar while the choir sang an appropriate hymn.
