The Holy See ADDRESS OF JOHN PAUL II TO THE PILGRIMS WHO HAD COME FOR THE BEATIFICATION OF EIGHT SERVANTS OF GOD Monday, 5 November 2001 Venerable Brothers in the Episcopate and Priesthood, Dear Men and Women Religious, Brothers and Sisters in Christ! 1. Yesterday, three days after the Solemnity of All Saints, on which we gave thanks to God for the wonderful works he performed in many of our brothers and sisters who have gone before us on the road to holiness, the Church continues to rejoice over the proclamation of eight new Blesseds. At this morning's meeting, we had a chance to learn from the teaching and example of charity that they have given us. All of this has to impel us to find the confidence and courage to continue on the demanding and exalting road to holiness, the "high standard of ordinary Christian living" (Novo millennio ineunte, n. 31). 2. My warm welcome goes firstly to you, dear pilgrims of Slovakia, who rejoice for the Beatification of Pavel Peter Gojdic and Methodius Dominic Trcka. Following the evangelical spirit and the apostolic zeal of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Apostles of the Slavs, these two new Blesseds are extraordinary for their love of Christ, service to their neighbour, and fidelity to the Chair of Peter. For his episcopal ministry, the blessed Pavel Peter Gojdic chose the motto "God is love, let us love him!", which he translated into a strong devotion for the Eucharist and the Sacred Heart. He nourished a deep love for the Mother of God, especially towards the image of Our Lady of Klokov, which he kept in the chapel of his residence.

The Maronite Voice A Publication of the Maronite Eparchies in the USA Volume VIII Issue No. II February 2012 The Massabki Brothers and The Righteous and the Just Today very community in the Middle East has stories about their heroes, and we Maronites have plenty of Eour own. The Massabki Brothers, in fact, are extraordinary heroes for extraordinary times. We can call them patrons of the Maronites and all people of goodwill who struggle throughout the Middle East for peace, justice and the cause of truth, especially today. Francis, Raphael, and Abdel Mo'ti Massabki were businessmen, devoted fathers and brothers, and faithful parish members who were martyred for their faith in the midst of the violence of Damascus in 1860. (See www.beatimassabki.com) At that time, Muslims and Christians alike had been victims of radical ideologies. The Syria of 1860 can be compared to the Syria of today with oppression from above and sectarian violence from below. The Massabki brothers were well respected in their day and, over the years, have long been held with esteem by laity and clergy alike. They are worthy and much needed intercessors for what is called the "Arab Spring" sweeping the Middle East. Christians in some parts of the world are praying for their very survival. It is sad to say this, but it is true. Radical Islam cannot tolerate anyone different from them - neither Christian nor Jew. This is not true of the majority of Muslims, but it is true of all who are radical. Ironically, Christians were part of the Middle East and the Arabic speaking world almost 700 years before the dawn of Islam.

  • Benin Prepares to Welcome the Pope Vatican City, 15 Nov
BENIN PREPARES TO WELCOME THE POPE VATICAN CITY, 15 NOV 2011 (VIS) - A press conference was held yesterday in the Holy See Press Office to present the visit of Benedict XVI to Benin, which is due to begin on Friday 18 November and to come to an end on Sunday 20 November, Solemnity of Christ the King. Holy See Press Office Director Fr. Federico Lombardi S.J. outlined the most important reasons for the Pope's return to Africa following his 2009 trip to Angola and Cameroon, first among them the signing of the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation of the Second Special Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops. The signing ceremony is due to take place in the presence of thirty-five presidents of national episcopal conferences, and the seven heads of the continent's regional conferences. Secondly Benin , a small African county of scarcely nine million inhabitants, has always been a place of great spiritual importance for the Church. It was, in fact, from Benin that, 150 years ago, the great work of evangelisation spread into neighbouring countries, from Togo to Ghana and Niger . Thus, Fr. Lombardi explained, the Pope's visit has raised great expectations. "It will certainly arouse an atmosphere of hope for the African Church , and be an encouragement to the continent of Africa as a whole. Naturally, it will emphasise existing problems, but from a positive perspective, underlining commitment to reconciliation, justice and peace, and the announcement of the Gospel as part of man's integral development. In other words, the trip seeks to be extremely constructive".
