Jan 11, 2013 08:23 UTC Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award launches reading guides for works by recipients Today, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) launches reading guides for twelve works by ten previous recipients. The reading guides are written by members of the jury who are experts of children’s and young adult literature. – The Astrid Lindgren Memorial is not just an award focusing on a specific writer, illustrator or organisation when the award is presented, it is an ongoing reading promotion project, says director Helen Sigeland. We are promoting the best books in the world for young people in as many ways as possible. Hopefully these reading guides will inspire teachers and librarians to include these books in curriculums, reading clubs and workshops. And maybe they can give publishing houses ideas for translations! The reading guides contain an introduction of the author, description of the contents, a suggested interpretation and topics for discussions. The guides are based on the following books: Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, Maikäfer, flieg! (Fly Away Home) by Christine Nöstlinger, O Meu Amigo Pintor (My Friend the Painter) by Lygia Bojunga, Northen Lights by Philip Pullman, Basu ni Notte by Ryôji Arai, The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson, The Ghost’s Child by Sonya Hartnett, The Devil Latch by Sonya Hartnett, Alors? by Kitty Crowther, Lénfant Racine by Kitty Crowther, The Arrival by Shaun Tan and Het Boek Van Alle Dingen(The Book of Everything) by Guus Kuijer. The award, which amounts to SEK 5 million, is given annually to a single recipient or to several. Authors, illustrators, oral storytellers and those active in reading promotion may be rewarded. The award is designed to promote interest in children's and young adult literature and to strengthen children's rights globally. An expert jury selects the winners from candidates nominated by institutions and organisations worldwide. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award was founded by the Swedish government in 2002 and is administrated by the Swedish Arts Council. Oct 02, 2017 12:06 UTC Nominees for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2018 to be announced on October 12 The candidates for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2018 will be presented on October 12 at the Frankfurt Book Fair. So far, seventeen laureates have received the Award, the latest recipient is the German illustrator Wolf Erlbruch. The award amounts to SEK 5 million (approx. EUR 570 000), making it the world's largest award for children's and young adult literature. The list of nominated candidates is a gold mine for anyone interested in international children’s and young adult literature – and would not be possible without the work of more than a hundred nominating bodies from all over the world. NEWSLETTER No 39 November, 2018 President’s Letter Dear IBBY Australia members and supporters, I am very honoured to take on the role of President of IBBY Australia, having served as Vice-President to Robin Morrow’s presidency for some time, and having just returned from a lengthy and inspiring European trip in association with attending the 36th IBBY International Congress (30/08/18, 31/08/18, and 1/9/18) in Athens. My involvement with IBBY began in 1983 when I attended a regional IBBY congress in Sydney, Changing Faces: Story and Children in an Electronic Age, organised by the indefatigable founding national president, Ena Noël. Aidan Chambers’s speech there regarding the influence of media on writing seeped into a lot of my subsequent writing and research, and was even more perspicacious than we realised at the time. In 1985, another conference was held in Perth –a combined IBBY/Loughborough Conference Brave New World: International Understanding Through Books. I recall that Ken Methold spoke of his concern that popular fiction was being ignored as a category in Australian children’s publishing, but in that same year Paul Jennings appeared on our radar with his first book, Unreal! I then attended my first international IBBY Congress in Tokyo in 1986, with 75 Australian delegates including Robin Morrow (whom I met there for the first time), Albert Ullin, Julie Vivas, Maurice Saxby and many others.

When & Where: Tuesday March 27 at 12:45pm CEST, Bio Victor/ Filmhuset, Borgvägen 1-4 in Stockholm. The 2018 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) Laureate will be announced in Stockholm, Sweden on March 27 by Jury Chairman Boel Westin in connection with the jury’s final meeting. Opening speakers are Ulrika Stuart Hamilton, Chair at the Swedish Arts Council, and Alice Bah Kuhnke, Swedish Minister for Culture and Democracy. The announcemnet will be followed by a presentation of the laureate by jury member Katarina Kieri. Last year’s laureate was the German illustrator Wolf Erlbruch. Previous laureates include Meg Rosoff (2016), Philip Pullman (2005), Kitty Crowther (2010), Barbro Lindgren (2014) and Shaun Tan (2011).
