Clergy Corner In the month of June the Church commemorates the of Jesus. The ancient devotion to the Sa- cred Heart is with us in prayers catalogued for recitation and in beautiful statuary, as is the case in our own church of Saint Mary. The question may arise as to why a particular month for such designation? We are all aware of other months dedicated to Mary and Joseph; for all souls, etc. Some of us older Catholics, especial- ly from my generation, are aware of novenas and how popular they were. I recall them being a major part of parish life in the 1950’s and 60’s. I also realize this period of time was right after the Second World War, the worst, most life destroying conflagration in modern times. And while so many families had emigrated from Europe, so many of their sons and daughters also enlisted to assist and Þght to end the war, so they experi- enced the war from both sides. Perhaps this added to the desire for a deeper faith life, especially in commu- nal faith settings. While the Church still encourages the practice of novenas to this day, it has largely fallen into a private devotion. But what is the need to dedicate this month of June for the Sacred Heart? Well, it started with St. receiving a private from our Lord to start the prac- tice on June 16th, 1675, which eventually, like so many other private , took on popular public piety. The message she received from our Lord was his desire to spread the influence of his Divine Love upon those who honor it and cause it to be honored. Our church, blessedly identiÞes such days months and years, such as the current year devoted to Saint Joseph, to help us concentrate our minds and hearts to bring us closer to our God. But the Church also gives us prayer for set hours of the day; they are called the Liturgy of the Hours. It is called the universal prayer of the Church; all Catholics are called to join in the discipline of saying it. In particular, clergy, who are Diocesan based, promise their bishop on the day of their diaconal ordination, that they will say the Divine OfÞce at least in the morning (Lauds) and in the evening (Vespers). For clergy who belong to religious orders, the practice may start even earlier within their religious formation. We are so blessed my brothers and sisters in Christ, that our Lord’s Church provides us with what we need to remain close to him. May we also all grow closer to His Sacred Heart, not only in the remaining days of this month, but throughout all the years of our lives. Deacon Lu Del Gaudio Our Parish Welcome to our Ushers Needed! What is a Mass Intention? To request a Mass Intention, The Catholic Church has a long tradition of offering please contact the parish ofÞce. Masses for special intentions and for the repose of the souls of the faithful departed. Whenever a priest celebrates Mass, he has at least two speciÞc intentions: the Þrst is to offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of the Church; the second is to apply the grace of that Mass toward a speciÞc need or intention. These second intentions are often requested by the lay faithful for things like the repose of the soul of a loved one, those who are ill, someone celebrating a birthday or anniversary, or in thanksgiving of something. When a person requests a Mass, a small stipend is usually given, but the priest will offer a Mass for an intention even if someone doesn’t have the money for it. “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” Mark 5:36b If you would like to request a Mass Intention here at St. Mary’s, please contact the parish ofÞce.
