STS. SIMON & JUDE OUR LADY OF GOOD COUNSEL ST. PETER 105 S. Bates St., PO Box E Colman, SD FLANDREAU, SD 57028 ELKTON, SD 57026 c/o Sts. Simon & Jude

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and The Brown Leather : The history is quite extensive as it covers centuries of history, but this title ‘Our Lady of Mt. Carmel’ refers to the special support of the Virgin Mary that is given to the Carmelite Order. This private was given to St. Simon Stock, who was born in Kent County, England approx. 1165 A.D. His mother had a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Simon began living an extraordinarily holy life from early on. When Simon was 12 years old, he made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and met a group of hermits on Mt. Carmel. These Carmelite hermits claimed to be successors of the Elijah. In the Bible 1 Kings 18, the Lord had sent the prophet Elijah to Mt. Carmel requesting presence of the King of Israel and the Israelites come with the 450 Baal . Elijah was the last of the prophets of at that time, and the Israelites had fallen away from faith in God. On Mt. Carmel was the contest between the God of Elijah and the god of the 450 Baal prophets, whom the Israelites had come to believe. Many of the Israelites were following this false god, but it was on Mt. Carmel that the Israelites came back to worship the God of Israel. The Carmelite Order has always had a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. Simon Stock helped bring back some of the Carmelite hermits to Aylesford, England when the Muslims were attacking Christians in the Holy Land. In England, “the began changing from the complete contemplative order to a mendicant order which goes out among the people. In 1254, St. Simon Stock was elected as the head of the order. Things were not going well, when The Virgin Mary appeared in the Carmelite order with her infant Son in her arms and taking the scapular in her right hand, she gave it to St. Simon Stock saying: “Receive my beloved son, this scapular. Who so ever dies wearing this scapular shall not suffer eternal fire. It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and a pledge of peace. Soon, the order began to flourish. Our Lady assures us that anyone who perseveres living this life devoutly and wearing her scapular will be preserved from eternal damnation. It is important to wear this scapular. Some people might say, if I wear it, then I can live any kind of life I want to live. That is not true! You have to live a devout life as a faithful disciple to the Lord and His Holy Mother in the spirit of prayer and faithfulness in loving God. There are stories of people who were hardened sinners wearing the scapular, who thought they would die with the scapular and receive the promises of our Blessed Mother Mary, however, at the time just before their death some how the scapular got away from them. But if you are faithful and living true to Jesus with our Blessed Mother’s protection you will receive the promises. Jesus said to Mary at the foot of the Cross, ‘behold your son, and to the disciple Jesus Loved, He said behold your mother.’” ... “‘Wear it devoutly and perseveringly, she says to each soul. It is my garment, to be clothed in it means that you are thinking continually of me, and I in turn am always thinking of you and helping you to secure eternal life.’ It is a beautiful thought, that in wearing the scapular, as I(Fr. Andrew) wear the Franciscan garment, try to be an imitator of St. Francis, who is an imitator of Jesus Christ in great Holiness.” ... “Wearing the garb of our Blessed Mother Mary, is to be faithfully serving our Lord Jesus. It is a great reminder to live faithfully and that our Blessed Mother Mary is praying for us to obtain the graces of inspiration and motivation to know what we should do in love.” (Fr. Andrew Apostolie, EWTN) There are some people, who use Christianity as a superstition, hoping that they will get to heaven without having to stop sinning. That does NOT happen. But if we practice our Faith, repenting of the evils of sin, doing good with love, forgiving one another, praying and not being anxious, then these particular devotions of Faith will bring extra gifts of God’s Grace to assist us in our conversion from our love of sin to Love of God.
