March 7, 2021 Third Sunday in Lent A Note from Fr. Sean, Magical Thinking, Part 2: Bargaining With

The Scriptures are full of stories of people arguing with God, even bargaining with Him. We see negotiating for the lives of the people of Sodom. Moses had to intervene constantly on behalf of Israel because of their transgressions in the wilderness. Most of the tried very hard to get out of the very job that God had asked them to do. In the New Testament, we see people asking Jesus for a for themselves or a loved one. This sort of intervention fits into the category of intercession, and is a part of our tradition: we ask God for things we think we need, especially when it comes to the alleviation of pain and suffering.

While bargaining with God has its place in our faith life, it can easily become an attempt to control God. There is a fine line between humbly asking and manipulating. What does this look like, and how does it fit into the category of magical thinking? Recall that magical thinking is the belief that you can influence the outcome of an event by doing something that has no bearing on the circumstances.

Asking God to do so something with the belief that He must grant your request is a form of magical thinking, because it depends on the belief that you have the power to control the outcome of an event without consideration for the actual circumstances for said event, and it also assumes that God does not have an opinion on the matter, making him an indifferent party to the circumstances rather than being, you know, God.

I see this most often connected with various private . Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is largely influenced by the private revelations offered to St. . The twelfth promise reads, “To all those who receive Communion on the First Friday of the month, for nine consecutive months, I will grant the grace of final repentance.” When we start to think that making the is necessary for salvation, or that some request may go unanswered if we miss a Friday, then we have fallen into magical thinking, especially since the only promise made is about final repentance, not something else.

We must also remember that this is a promise given through private and is neither scriptural nor magisterial. While devotions based on private revelations are allowed by the of the Church, we must remember that it isn’t an endorsement, and that public revelation, what we know from Scripture, Tradition and Magisterium is the only revealed truth.

We also have to look at what the promise is promising: grace, something which Christ offers to all who ask. There is nothing magical about making this devotion; it is a means to grow closer to Christ. Some people seem to think that Jesus is asking us to satisfy a list of demands in order to receive His grace. This is of course not the case, but it is easy to fall into this line of thinking.

In order to have a healthy relationship with , we need to have a sturdy knowledge of public revelation, meaning the Scriptures, Sacred Tradition (that’s “Big T” Tradition, folks), and Magisterium (the teaching authority of the Church). Public revelation teaches of a God who is indulgent with His grace, not stingy. The state of our soul depends upon the work we do to be better disciples, not checking off a list of tasks.

Yours in Christ, Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church Cicero, Indiana Sacred Heart Pastorate Consecration to St. Joseph On December 8, 2020, Pope Francis announced a “Year of St. Joseph” to run through December 8, 2021 and mark the 150Th anniversary of St. Joseph being named the Patron of the Universal Church. Join the Sacred Heart Pastorate in a community consecration to St. Joseph using Fr. Don- ald Calloway’s book “Consecration to St. Joseph: The Wisdom of Our Spiritual Father.” What is a spiritual consecration? In this instance, it’s entrusting ourselves to the paternal care of St. Joseph, the adopted father of Christ, so that he can lovingly guide us to holi- ness! You can have many different consecrations (Marian, Sacred Heart) as each purpose is to gain virtue and holiness. What better way to get to heaven than to have the Holy Family as our guide? Our first gathering will be Wednesday, March 24, following evening Mass in-person in the Church and by zoom at the same time. This will be an introductory session. The con- secration will then begin March 30, Holy Tuesday, and end on May 1st, the feast of St. Joseph the Worker. No gathering on Holy Tuesday. All remaining sessions through the month of April will be in-person on Tuesday morning after 8:30 AM Mass and on zoom Tuesday evenings at 7:00 PM. Books may be purchased online through any book retailer or by contacting Annie Aker in the Parish Office. For more information or to RSVP, contact Annie Aker.
