May we always keep in mind that this parish exists to give glory to God in all we do and for each one of us to be sanctified in our lives. St. Francis of Assisi, pray for us.

The Holy Family experienced many of the same joys and trials that all parents and children experience today. And, so, we can look to this Family for help in our own family lives and see in them a model of stewardship in family life.

The Gospel passage from Luke starts by telling us something about ’ parents: “Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover, and when he was twelve years old, they went up according to festival custom.” This Family took seriously the stewardship of their time. The “Holy Couple” carefully observed the traditions and practice of their Jewish faith and brought up their Son to do the same. They worshiped as a family, and with their faith community. And they did so faithfully.

We can take their example to heart by making Sunday Mass attendance a priority for our families, by making prayer with our family a priority every day, by making sure that we regularly celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and by observing in our family life the feasts and fasts appropriate to the liturgical calendar. When we, as families, prioritize our Time with God and worship of Him we will be imitating the Holy Family.

On this Feast of the Holy Family, let us reclaim the beauty and importance of family life. Let’s commit to steward our families well in 2019, making time spent with God and practicing our faith the most important appointments on our family calendars.

As we continue to celebrate the great Octave of Christmas, I pray that the joy of this season is filling your heart. Remember for us as Catholics, Christmas is not just one day – we celebrate until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, January 13! With all the festivities we have had, I want to say thank you to each and every one who helped make the Advent/Christmas Seasons so wonderful! There are too many to list by name, but it takes each family member coming together to make things happen. Whether it was all the folks who worked on Advent activities and preparations, the many hands that cleaned the church in preparation for Christmas, all the liturgical and music ministers and so many more, please know how great it was to have you participate. I am grateful for all the gifts and greetings that so many sent to the rectory to help brighten the staff’s day. So again, thank you for all you did to make our Parish celebration of Christmas so wonderful!

Have you ever heard the term “First Friday” thrown around in Catholic circles, without knowing why there was something special about this particular day at the start of each month? The is a reparatory devotion in the Catholic Church that arose from a private . This devotion is associated with the of Jesus, and one of the most popular devotions. The devotion involves receiving Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays of the month. You can think of it almost like a which is prayed on consecutive days for a particular intention, but instead, these devotions are performed on consecutive months for the particular intention of reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This devotion calls on the faithful to “stand in the gap” by doing penance for sinners, and it gives a special promise of Divine assistance at the hour of death, that is, the promise of dying in a state of grace and therefore obtaining heaven.

St. received visions of our Lord and His Sacred Heart from 1673-1675. During these apparitions to St. Margaret Mary, our Lord made promises that are the basis for the First Friday devotions we celebrate to this day. Our Lord promised these blessings to those who practice devotion to his Sacred Heart: 1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life. 2. I will give peace in their families. 3. I will console them in all their troubles. 4. I will be their refuge in life and especially in death. 5. I will abundantly bless all their undertakings. 6. Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and Infinite Ocean of mercy. 7. Tepid souls shall become fervent. 8. Fervent souls shall rise speedily to great perfection. 9. I will bless those places wherein the image of My Sacred Heart shall be exposed and venerated. 10. I will give to priests the power to touch the most hardened hearts. 11. Persons who propagate this devotion shall have their names eternally written in my Heart. 12. In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive. Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.

The last promise has given rise to the pious practice of making an effort to attend Mass and receive Communion on the first Friday of each month. Beginning in January 2019, the SFA Adult Faith Formation Team will display a framed image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the vestibule on the Sunday before the First Friday as a reminder of the First Friday devotion.

How to complete the First Friday’s Devotion:  Receive Holy Communion on each First Friday,  The nine Fridays must be consecutive  They must be made in honor and in reparation to His Sacred Heart.

During Eucharistic Adoration, we remain in His Presence and open ourselves to His Graces. To join Eucharistic Adoration for a set time each week or just to try it out, contact Judy at 314-346-7009.

PARTICIPATE IN THE FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTION The First Friday devotion is associated with the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and one of the most popular devotions. The devotion involves receiving Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays of the month. Read more about this devotion and how to participate on page 6 of this bulletin.

ATTEND DAILY MASS If you are already attending a daily Mass once or twice a week, try attending one more. If you are not attending a daily Mass, try once a week or even once a month. Daily Mass is offered at St. Francis of Assisi Monday through Friday at 6:00 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. and on Saturdays at 7:45 a.m.

BRING A FRIEND TO SUNDAY MASS An important part of being Catholic is evangelization. Helping someone to see the beauty of the Catholic faith can help ignite/ reignite their faith and reignite your own faith and remind you of why you are Catholic. Whether the person is a former Catholic, a Catholic who has strayed, or someone who has never been to Catholic Mass or any church service whatsoever, inviting them might be the best thing you do in the New Year. Who knows what can come of it.
