Giovanni Agusta, nato a Parma nel 1879, nel 1907 progetta e realizza il suo primo velivolo, l'AG-1, un aliante biplano che compie il primo volo sulla piazza d'armi di Capua al traino di un'automobile. Nel 1913 Giovanni Agusta entra alla Caproni di Vizzola Ticino, che lascia dopo la Prima Guerra Mondiale per fondare la Costruzioni Aeronautiche Giovanni Agusta, con officine a Tripoli, Bengasi e Foggia. Nel 1923, con la moglie Giuseppina e i figli Domenico, Vincenzo e Mario, Giovanni si trasferisce a Cascina Costa, sul campo di volo Gaspare Bolla, e avvia l'attività di riparazione e revisione dei trimotori Caproni. Nel 1927 Giovanni muore prematuramente e la ditta passa sotto la guida della moglie e del primogenito Domenico. A Cascina Costa l'Agusta amplia la propria attività soprattutto dopo lo scoppio della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, con aerei costruiti su licenza e modifiche su aerei FIAT BREDA SIAI. Alla fine della guerra l'Agusta si trova in una fase di stallo a causa del divieto imposto dagli alleati alla produzione aeronautica. Approfittando del boom del settore motociclistico e delle proprie conoscenze nel settore meccanico, Domenico Agusta fonda una società per la produzione e la vendita di motoveicoli. Nasce, nel 1945, la Meccanica Verghera, che produrrà oltre trenta modelli di grande successo.
