Also, the article tries to throw a little more light on this notion, through a multidisciplinary view on the part of the population that has been named Vlachs in the past or present. The goal is to create an image of what they really are, and what they have never been, through a specific chronological historical overview of data related to the Vlachs. Thus, it allows the reader to understand, through the facts presented here, the misconceptions that are related to this term in the historiographic literature. Key words: Vlachs, Morlachs, Serbs, Slavs, Wallachia, Moldavia, Romanian Orthodox Church The terms »Vlach«1, or later, »Morlach«2, does not represent the nationality, that is, they have never represented it throughout the history, because both of this terms exclusively refer to the members of Serbian nation, in the Serbian ethnic area. –––––––––––– [email protected] 1 Serbian (Cyrillic script): влах. »Now in answer to all these frivolous assertions, it is sufficient to observe, that our Morlacchi are called Vlassi, that is, noble or potent, for the same reason that the body of the nation is called Slavi, which means glorious; that the word Vlah has nothing

Our annual Holiday Social on December 5 at Cinque Terre in the Old Port, was combined with a 10th anniversary party – an event to mark the milestone in the Sister City relationship between Portland, Maine and Mytilene, Lesvos, Greece. Preceding this event, letters of congratulations were exchanged (with the help of HSoM member Nicos Provatas in Mytilene) between Mayor Michael Brennan and the Mayor of Mytilene, Dimitrios Vounatsos, who also sent gifts of books and copies of Mytilene City medallions to Mayor Brennan and HSoM president, Mary Snell. • 2016 Greece Country Report | SGI Sustainable Governance Indicators
Greece Report Dimitri A. Sotiropoulos, Kevin Featherstone, Roy Karadag (Coordinator) m o c . a i l o t o F – Sustainable Governance g i n n a v Indicators 2016 o j © Sustainable Governance SGI Indicators SGI 2016 | 2 Greece Report Executive Summary In the period under review, the progress which Greece had made up until mid- 2014 – fiscal consolidation and structural reforms – gave way to government volatility. This instability began with the parliamentary elections of January 2015, but was exacerbated by the 5 July 2015 national referendum, on the European Commission’s second-to-last proposal of reforms for Greece, called by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, leader of the new governing party Syriza. Just two months later (September 2015), political stability was further shaken when Tsipras was forced to call snap parliamentary elections as the radical left-wing faction of his left-wing party broke away, leaving the government coalition (between Syriza and the nationalist right-wing party ANEL) in danger of collapse. Prolonged negotiations between the Syriza-ANEL coalition government and the country’s creditors in the first half of 2015, combined with the previously mentioned political turmoil, brought economic activity to a standstill. As a consequence, the country’s economy, which had started growing in 2014, albeit by less than 1%, fell into depression. Capital controls were imposed on the banks when the government announced the aforementioned referendum. The Greek banking system was in dire need of recapitalization to a larger extent than previously understood. Even so, Greece’s democracy has been able to withstand long-term economic deterioration and acute political conflict.

New Agriculture for a New Generation: Recharging Greek Youth to Revitalize the Agriculture and Food Sector of the Greek Economy Viticulture, Table & Wine Grapes Varieties Coordinator: Dr. Christos Vasilikiotis, Assistant Professor Project Leader: Konstantinos Zoukidis, Adjunct Lecturer & Researcher Team members: Dr. Eleni Topalidou, Lecturer & Researcher Michalis Genitsariotis, Adjunct Lecturer & Researcher Dr. Ilias Kalfas, Researcher Executive summary Greece is experiencing the consequences of the hardest financial crisis of its history. The economic crisis in Greece, have a great impact on unemployment and as a result companies are out of business and many people especially young ones are unemployed. In addition, economic crisis, from one hand leads more and more people, special young people with many skills to leave from Greece to other countries and from the other hand, turns young unemployed people to the agricultural sector. The current project’s aim is to determine the potential of viticulture, table and grape varieties in Greece could be an answer for recharging youth and if this sector could improve the national economy and reverse this negative trend. Grape cultivation and wine making have a distinguished place in the history of Western civilization. The ancient Greeks gave an importance to wine, which greatly exceeded its role as a beverage. The production of wine and table grape has been an important part of Greek culture for many centuries. Nowadays Greece holds the 13th place on vineyard surface area. It is one of the first table grape producing (4th) countries in Europe, first producer of currants (Black Corinth) of the world production and eighth exported country in dried grapes worldwide.
