For the first time at the Festival, the untold stories of how Sephardic Jews from Algeria, Tunisia, and Greece suffered during the Holocaust are shared during a full day of films, “Sephardim in the Shoah” (Sunday, April 2). “From Ethiopia to Israel” (Tuesday, April 4) explores the challenges of emigration. “An Evening of Empowering Sephardi Women” (Monday, April 3) showcases three films that explore women’s experiences and highlight differences in gender relations and expectations between Ashkenazi and Sephardi communities. ASF’s Young Leadership Board is hosting “Love, Sephardi Style” (Tuesday, April 4) an evening of short films that explore modern romance and relationships from several Sephardi perspectives, including Israeli and Persian. Our annual Holiday Social on December 5 at Cinque Terre in the Old Port, was combined with a 10th anniversary party – an event to mark the milestone in the Sister City relationship between Portland, Maine and Mytilene, Lesvos, Greece. Preceding this event, letters of congratulations were exchanged (with the help of HSoM member Nicos Provatas in Mytilene) between Mayor Michael Brennan and the Mayor of Mytilene, Dimitrios Vounatsos, who also sent gifts of books and copies of Mytilene City medallions to Mayor Brennan and HSoM president, Mary Snell. For the anniversary social we were honored to have as our special guests Mayor Brennan, and Portland City Council members Nick Mavodones and Ed Suslovic, as well as Neale Duffett, a representative of The Archangel Committee for our Russian Sister City. Sister City relationships are an important way for ordinary citizens of a city to come in contact with the people of another country and, through continual engagement, learn about their society, their politics, economics and culture. In questo paese considerato un modello di sviluppo e modernità per tutti i paesi arabi e musulmani, il requisito della verginità della sposa al matrimonio resta purtroppo ancora valido. La perdita della verginità esclude o emargina. Le giovani donne di fronte a questo problema non hanno altra scelta: per sfuggire alla vergogna e costruire un futuro, ricorrono ad un intervento chirurgico. La imenorrafia, pratica silenziosa e dolorosa, è una procedura chirurgica che consiste nel ricucire l’imene delle fidanzate deflorate per assicurare il sanguinamento durante la prima notte di nozze. Attorno a un caso particolare, testimonianze di giovani ragazze in difficoltà, un vero dibattito nazionale che coinvolge i vari personaggi del film. Cresce in una famiglia modesta, in un piccolo paese nel nord della Tunisia. Dopo il diploma, entra a far parte della facoltà di scienze di Tunisi, dove crea un cineclub. Nel 1990 va a studiare Cinema in Belgio dove si laurea in Tecniche di Cinematografia a l’INRACI prosegue la sua formazione a l’ULB in Analisi e Tecnica della Scrittura Cinematografica. Ha poi lavorato nel settore audiovisivo, pubblicità magazine, video. Gira diversi cortometraggi e nel 1999 crea una sua società di produzione l’ A Bout de Souffle Production.

I argue that it was the ambiguous play between Greek music’s discursive value (its “image”) and the semiotic potential of its sound and music-adjacent practices, that allowed for its double-reception by Euro-Israeli elites and Working-class immigrants from Arab and Muslim countries (Mizrahim). This ambiguity positioned Greek music as a site for bypassing, negotiating, and subverting the dichotomy between Jew and Arab. It must have been in the eighties, at a Greek concert in Utrecht, that I first met Stavriana Livadarou and her husband Harry Gen. Stavriana, who knew that I was involved with Greek music, and rebetika in particular, had once told me that her family had been close to the family and friends of Agapios Tomboulis, and that there might be an interesting story here. For the uninitiated: Agapios1 Tomboulis was a famous oud player of Armenian birth, born in Constantinople. At a certain point he moved to Greece, where he subsequently lived for many years, playing an important role in the musical life of the country. With his oud (oriental lute), he mainly accompanied singers. The name Tomboulis suited him well, because “tombul" means "chubby, fat" in Turkish, and Agapios was indeed a chubby guy. Given his surname, this may perhaps have been a family trait. Occasionally Stavriana reminded me that I really needed to talk to her mother, because she could tell me all kind of things about Tomboulis; but, one way or another, the 'Tomboulis project' did not get off the ground at this time. Maybe it was because Tomboulis was not a musician who occupied the limelight. He was known as an accompanist to singers, of which Roza Eskenazi - also from Istanbul – was the most famous. Tomboulis was the man who always took care of a solid melodic - rhythmic base.
