'Pakistan Is for the Peaceful' presents an even more immersive work, comprised of just three extended tracks and again produced 100% live at the master’s rooftop home in Karachi by Grammy-winner Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Zomba Prison Project, The Good Ones), with musical accompaniment provided by Ustad’s four sons. Ustad Saami is the last living surti master, a precursor of the ancient Islamic devotional music of qawwali. Despite being under constant threat from Islamic fundamentalists, the master has spent his life as a dedicated practitioner of a vanishing art — one that has been passed on from generation to generation since the 13th century. It has just been added to the Unesco list of intangible cultural heritage. Katerina Tsiridou is one of the torch-bearers of the rebetiko. From an early age she learned the classical piano, folk guitar and baglama. For years she is considered to be one of the best singers for rebetiko and traditional Greek songs. Katerinas Tsiridou’s music has a lot of world music influences, experimenting with musicians from all over the world during concerts and seminars of rebetiko and smyrneiko music. For instance she has worked with the bluesman Louisiana Red and Bob Brozmann. She also took part in the documentary about Roza Eskenazy “My sweet canary”. Listen. Rodrigo Costa Felix: Tempo RCDR 2020 / € 9,45 / 8435383670519 / label: Rock-CD Records / format: CD / Portugal – Fado Rodrigo Costa Félix is one of the greatest references of Fado of his generation. Professional for over 20 years, he has a way of performing that is distinguished by elegance, sobriety and maturity. On "Tempo" Rodrigo definitely takes his lyricist side by signing 6 of the 12 original themes. The rest are by contemporary poets such as Tiago Torres da Silva, Vasco Gato or José Fialho Gouveia. Basically based on traditional Fados, it also brings new melodies by Pedro Jóia, Tiago Machado, Luiz Caracol or Rogério Charraz. The vocal and instrumental tradition of the fatalistic, painfully nostalgic fado stretches back to Portugal's days as seafaring power, but it culminated in the mid-20th century with the immensely gifted—and nearly as beloved—Amália Rodrigues. Post-Amália, traditional fado singers sometimes run the risk of being an indulged set of historical reenactors, but the young Félix sidesteps that by focusing on the minute nuances of his song, helped by extremely sympathetic instrumentalists. Ulf Gruvberg’s and Carin Kjellman’s album 'Folk och Rackare' (1976) and 'Rackarspel' (1978), which they released after forming the group Folk & Rackare together with Norwegians Jørn Jensen and Trond Villa. Carin Kjellman and Ulf Gruvberg are legends, both as folk musicians and for their doubly educational efforts as radio hosts and editors on the Swedish Radio. Their cooperation began in Gothenburg in 1970. Soon, they began botanizing and modernizing medieval ballads. Their music also struck a balance between conservation and breaking new ground. Since 2017, Folk & Rackare are reunited, and with this release there are two more Swedish folk music classics available again. Timeless songs in a new format, just as it originally intended. The gestation of this work began months ago and was interrupted and altered by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, past the confinement and the state of alarm, and once in the ‘new normal’, has "hardened" the sound of the album. The pandemic has made the record change completely. At first, he wanted it to be continuous and calm, to make a much slower record. But when they were in the middle of recording, they had to confine themselves and the fact that they were in this situation changed the dynamics of the album. In principle, it had to be a quiet record, yes, but it has ended up being a very powerful album, with accelerated and forceful rhythms. Listen to a track. In addition to leader Jussi Lehtonen, the quartet is completed by pianist Holger Marjamaa, double bassist Heikko Remmel and saxophonist Joonatan Rautio. 'Connection' cements the quartet as one of the best representatives of its genre in the Nordic countries. Based strongly in the jazz tradition, the band gets off to a strong start right from the first track. The name of the album refers to a musical connection that Jussi Lehtonen feels very strong with all the musicians in the quartet. All of them understand and hear things with a certain sensitivity, and are able to react to things quickly. Our annual Holiday Social on December 5 at Cinque Terre in the Old Port, was combined with a 10th anniversary party – an event to mark the milestone in the Sister City relationship between Portland, Maine and Mytilene, Lesvos, Greece. Preceding this event, letters of congratulations were exchanged (with the help of HSoM member Nicos Provatas in Mytilene) between Mayor Michael Brennan and the Mayor of Mytilene, Dimitrios Vounatsos, who also sent gifts of books and copies of Mytilene City medallions to Mayor Brennan and HSoM president, Mary Snell. Personal testimonies and rare archive footage are combined in multimedia video installations that bring visitors face-to-face with the survivors of these traumatic events. Through four themes (history, journey, home and trauma), the exhibition travels from the Greek-Turkish exchange in 1922-24 to the German-Polish forced migration at the end of World War II, the Partition of India and the Cyprus crisis’ in the 1960’s and 1970’s. These personal testimonies reveal a common experience of lost homelands and communities dissolved: the story of people who will always feel ‘Twice a Stranger’. The exhibition has been created by the Greek production company Anemon, with the support of the Culture Programme of the EU. It is co-organized by the University of Oxford, the Benaki Museum, the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, the Istanbul-Bilgi University and the Tolle Idee! The exhibition is supported by ERT, the A.G. Personal testimonies and rare archive footage are combined in multimedia video installations that bring visitors face-to-face with the survivors of these traumatic events. Through four themes (history, journey, home and trauma), the exhibition travels from the Greek-Turkish exchange in 1922-24 to the German-Polish forced migration at the end of World War II, the Partition of India and the Cyprus crisis’ in the 1960’s and 1970’s. These personal testimonies reveal a common experience of lost homelands and communities dissolved: the story of people who will always feel ‘Twice a Stranger’. The exhibition has been created by the Greek production company Anemon, with the support of the Culture Programme of the EU. It is co-organized by the University of Oxford, the Benaki Museum, the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, the Istanbul-Bilgi University and the Tolle Idee! Leventis Foundation, the Goethe Institut, the British Council, the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron), the Greek Council for Refugees and the Centre for Asia Minor Studies (Athens).

La perdita della verginità esclude o emargina. Le giovani donne di fronte a questo problema non hanno altra scelta: per sfuggire alla vergogna e costruire un futuro, ricorrono ad un intervento chirurgico. La imenorrafia, pratica silenziosa e dolorosa, è una procedura chirurgica che consiste nel ricucire l’imene delle fidanzate deflorate per assicurare il sanguinamento durante la prima notte di nozze. Attorno a un caso particolare, testimonianze di giovani ragazze in difficoltà, un vero dibattito nazionale che coinvolge i vari personaggi del film. Cresce in una famiglia modesta, in un piccolo paese nel nord della Tunisia. Dopo il diploma, entra a far parte della facoltà di scienze di Tunisi, dove crea un cineclub. Nel 1990 va a studiare Cinema in Belgio dove si laurea in Tecniche di Cinematografia a l’INRACI prosegue la sua formazione a l’ULB in Analisi e Tecnica della Scrittura Cinematografica. Ha poi lavorato nel settore audiovisivo, pubblicità magazine, video. Gira diversi cortometraggi e nel 1999 crea una sua società di produzione l’ A Bout de Souffle Production.

I argue that it was the ambiguous play between Greek music’s discursive value (its “image”) and the semiotic potential of its sound and music-adjacent practices, that allowed for its double-reception by Euro-Israeli elites and Working-class immigrants from Arab and Muslim countries (Mizrahim). This ambiguity positioned Greek music as a site for bypassing, negotiating, and subverting the dichotomy between Jew and Arab.
