Singing the Memory of Sepharad: Traditional Sephardic Song and its Interpretation Katerina Garcia Abstract The transmission and interpretation of Sephardic songs is inextricably linked to Sephardic culture, and to this day represents a powerful marker of identity. It is the aim of this article to first contextualise traditional Sephardic song by outlining a brief introduction into the cultural background of the Sephardic Diaspora. Subsequently, I will introduce the various secular forms and genres of Sephardic traditional song, focusing on the modes of their interpretation by both contemporary Sephardic and non-Sephardic musicians. In doing so, I will propose a typology of performance approaches, with regards to the role that the re-imagining of Sepharad as a mythical land of the past plays in this process. Keywords: Sephardic music, Judeo-Spanish song, interpretation Introduction The Sephardic Jews, or Sephardim1, represent the second largest ethnic division within Judaism, the first one being the Ashkenazim, or German and Eastern-European Jews. In the narrowest sense of the term, Sephardim are the descendants of the Jews expelled from the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the 15th century (Spain, 1492; Portugal, 1496), and those who assimilated culturally to them in the main areas of Sephardic settlement post-1492 The areas of the Sephardic diaspora are indicated in Figure 1: Figure 1 – The Sephardic Diaspora (Sephiha and Weinstock 1997) Ethnomusicology Ireland 5 (2017) Garcia 172 For the present discussion of traditional Sephardic music, only the areas of the Eastern Mediterranean (incl. the present-day state of Israel), the Balkan Peninsula and North Africa (the former Ottoman Empire) are relevant, as it is here that a specific Sephardic language and culture develop. -

DÜNYA presents “Aman Aman !” The Music of the Turkish & Greek Café directed by Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol and George Lernis featuring DÜNYA and Pharos ensembles with Panos Aivazidis, kanun, Beth Bahia Cohen, violin, Burcu Güleç, voice, Vasilis Kostas, laouto, George Lernis, percussion, Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol, voice, ud, saz, and Eirini Tornesaki, voice October 30, 2018, 7:30pm, MIT Bartos Theatre I Our program is designed to take it’s audiences on a musical journey where they will be introduced to the Turkish coffeehouse and the Greek Kafe Aman repertoires. The tittle “Aman Aman !” was thoughtfully chosen since “Aman” is an expression that is commonly used in daily life by Turks and Greeks and can indicate a number of moods/feelings including gratitude, surprise, joy and sorrow. Furthermore, this expression is used by audiences to acknowledge the craftsmanship of musicians during an instrumental or vocal improvisation as well. In fact, particularly among Greek people, a vocal improvisation is called an “Amane”. Our repertoire includes late classical Ottoman/Turkish music, urban folk songs from Turkey, songs representing the Kafe Aman style from mainland Greece as well as early Rembetika songs. Catering to the increasing scholarly and general public interest in the role commercial recordings had on musical traditions from the early twentieth century, that production became a landmark in the revised appreciation of Sephardic music prior to the rapid chain of events leading to the dissolution of the traditional communities that maintained this music. -

VINICIO CAPOSSELA From Tefteri: A Settling of Scores (non- fiction) Translated from the Italian by Elettra Pauletto Athens, March 2012 The word “crisis” comes from the Greek kríno, which means to sep- arate, sort, divide. Crisis is a concept that lends itself well to rebetiko— a type of music born of separation—and to Greece, from which Europe is pulling away, driven by the disdain that lies at the root of all rejection. People often speak of Greece with language that evokes tragedy, which, as a genre, was invented there. The word “tragedy” comes from the Greek tragudi, or song, and at its root is tragos, which means goat. Tragodia, song of the goat. Once the cultural mother of Europe, Greece has become a scapegoat for her sins. Europa, daughter to a king of Crete, seduced by Zeus. Europa of the “wide eyes,” land of the west, ever facing the setting sun. Since ancient times, Greek creations have been permeated with a sense of universality. Taken together, this body of work tells the story of man, the anthropos. And it tells the story of man and destiny, of what is happening to Westerners in this moment of “crisis,” of choices. Let’s travel there, a small tool in hand— a thyrsus, perhaps— and accompanied by music born of catastrophe. Greeks still use the word Katastrofis to describe the Greco- Turkish war of 1922, the destruction of Smyrna, and the exodus of the Greeks from Asia Minor. These million and a half refugees were the ones who, following the treaty of Lausanne, returned destitute to a motherland that no longer wanted them; brought back with them the music and customs of other places; and gathered in suburban neighborhoods, changing the social fabric of 1920s Athens (then dubbed the “Paris of the Eastern Mediterranean” by the young Greek state, which wanted to westernize Greek culture). -

Sa curiosité le pousse à travailler avec des musiciens de tous horizons, comme la famille de percussions iraniennes Chemirani, le chanteur breton Erik Marchand, le joueur de sarangui indien Dhruba Ghosh ou les musiciens chamanes de la république de Tuva Huun Huur Tuu. En 2004, il fut le directeur artistique du programme culturel des jeux olympiques à Heraklion. -

Greek dance and everyday nationalism in contemporary Greece - Kalogeropoulou 55 Greek dance and everyday nationalism in contemporary Greece Sofia Kalogeropoulou The University of Otago ABSTRACT In this article I explore how dance as an everyday lived experience during community events contributes to constructing national identities. As a researcher living in New Zealand where issues of hybridity and fluidity of identities in relation to dance are currently a strong focus for discussion, I was inspired to examine dance in my homeland, Greece. In a combination of ethnography and autobiography I examine dance as an embodied practice that physically and culturally manifests the possession of a distinct national identity that can also be used as a means of differentiation. I also draw on the concept of banal nationalism by Michael Billig (1995), which looks at the mundane use of national symbols and its consequences. I argue that while folk dance acts as a uniting device amongst members of national communities, its practice of everyday nationalism can also be transformed into a political ritual that accentuates differences and projects chauvinism and extreme nationalism with a potential for conflict. INTRODUCTION A few years ago when I was still living in Greece I was invited to my cousin’s farewell party before he went to do his national service. This is a significant rite of passage for a Greek male marking his transition from childhood to manhood and also fulfilling his obligations towards his country and the state. This dance event celebrates the freedom of the civilian life and marks the beginning of a twelve-month period of military training in the Greek army. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE THE AMERICAN SEPHARDI FEDERATION PRESENTS THE 20th ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF THE NEW YORK SEPHARDIC JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE HISTORY AND TRAVEL THROUGH TIME FROM BAGHDAD TO GREECE, ETHIOPIA TO SWITZERLAND, AND ISRAEL TO IRAN, MARCH 30 – APRIL 6, 2017 (NEW YORK, NY) February 27, 2017 – In its 20th Anniversary Edition, the American Sephardi Federation (ASF) today announced the programs for its weeklong celebration of diverse stories and rich histories portrayed in film at the New York Sephardic Jewish Film Festival (NYSJFF). The Festival features a different themed program each day. Select nights are dedicated to the Moroccan, Iraqi, Greek, and Yemenite Jewish communities. For the first time at the Festival, the untold stories of how Sephardic Jews from Algeria, Tunisia, and Greece suffered during the Holocaust are shared during a full day of films, “Sephardim in the Shoah” (Sunday, April 2). “From Ethiopia to Israel” (Tuesday, April 4) explores the challenges of emigration. “An Evening of Empowering Sephardi Women” (Monday, April 3) showcases three films that explore women’s experiences and highlight differences in gender relations and expectations between Ashkenazi and Sephardi communities. ASF’s Young Leadership Board is hosting “Love, Sephardi Style” (Tuesday, April 4) an evening of short films that explore modern romance and relationships from several Sephardi perspectives, including Israeli and Persian. An interactive discussion will follow with an award-winning Jewish Iranian-American filmmaker. “For this important NYSJFF 20th Anniversary Edition, we are proud to present poignant and powerful programs that speak to the issues of our time and all time,” said Sara Nodjoumi, Artistic Director of the New York Sephardic Jewish Film Festival. -

Our annual Holiday Social on December 5 at Cinque Terre in the Old Port, was combined with a 10th anniversary party – an event to mark the milestone in the Sister City relationship between Portland, Maine and Mytilene, Lesvos, Greece. Preceding this event, letters of congratulations were exchanged (with the help of HSoM member Nicos Provatas in Mytilene) between Mayor Michael Brennan and the Mayor of Mytilene, Dimitrios Vounatsos, who also sent gifts of books and copies of Mytilene City medallions to Mayor Brennan and HSoM president, Mary Snell. For the anniversary social we were honored to have as our special guests Mayor Brennan, and Portland City Council members Nick Mavodones and Ed Suslovic, as well as Neale Duffett, a representative of The Archangel Committee for our Russian Sister City. Sister City relationships are an important way for ordinary citizens of a city to come in contact with the people of another country and, through continual engagement, learn about their society, their politics, economics and culture.
