ith the 2010-11 school year successfully un- derway, we must pause, reflect on the 2009- W 10 year, and acknowledge the loyal and dedicated support of our alumni, parents and friends. The school is as strong as it is today because of the financial support that we receive from the greater West- ern Reserve Academy community. Thanks to your giving, Western Reserve Academy received gifts totaling $4,279,000. Importantly, the 2009-10 Annual Fund surpassed the budgeted goal of $1,800,000 by $2,915. The $1,802,915 had an immediate impact on every- thing from classroom study to faculty salaries as it accounts for 8.4 percent of our operating budget. Equally important, we must recognize the Academy’s reliance on your commitment of volunteer time. 2 Western Reserve Academy The Strategic Plan

he Strategic Plan was developed during a two-year process that was guided by the principles of Academic Strength, Social Mission, Western Reserve Academy Values and Funding and Resources. The plan establishes five main goals T to ensure that Western Reserve Academy is an educational community that leads, inspires and is worthy of emulation. The goals of the Strategic Plan are shown below along with a list of cities where Strategic Plan discussions were held in the second half the 2009-10 academic year. Strategic Plan discussions will continue as we seek advice from, and communication with, the Western Reserve Academy community.

Since its inception in the 2008-09 Annual Report on Giving, we assembled Brick Row Legends highlighting Mr. Richard F. Carle ’50 alumni who have contributed to the Annual Fund without interruption during the past 10, 15, 20 and 25 years. Mr. Dan T. ’71 & Mrs. Melissa Carter After careful consideration, we expanded the criteria for the 2009-10 Brick Row Legends in order to more Mr. Glenn J. Class reunions mark a special time in the lives of Western Reserve Academy alumni and their families, providing the opportunity to recall with friends fond memories of WRA and experience the Academy of today. Working toward individual class goals and a larger reunion goal, reunion giving is an important source of class unification and celebration. The 2010 Reunion Weekend was attended by 219 alumni and 74 friends and family members from as near as Hudson, to as far as London, England, all contributing to a great success. Highlights of the weekend included the class dinners (all held on campus this year), WRA Today classes, and a conversation with Head of School Christopher D. Burner ’80. Emphasizing the impact that a Western Reserve Academy education can make in one’s life even 70 years after graduating, the Class of 1940 had the highest giving participation rate, totaling 73 percent. Celebrating their 50th Reunion, the Class of 1960 gave a total of $330,992, the largest gift from any class. Thanks to the generosity of all alumni celebrating reunions in 2010, $547,268 was raised for the Annual Fund through Reunion Class Giving.

Although rooted in history and tradition, Alumni Giving supports the everyday operations of Western Tien Wei Yang Reserve Academy. Alumni gifts accounted for 66 percent of the 2009-10 Annual Fund. Without the AF: 56% $1,100 loyal financial support of our generous alumni, Western Reserve Academy would need to increase tuition by 1942 $4,615 per student to continue to offer the same quality of opportunities for our students. James D. Chambers ’74 pon his death, James W. Ellsworth left a substantial portion of his estate Managing Partner - Conundrum Capital Partners to Western Reserve Academy. His initial gift of $4 million served as the Fred A. Cummings ’85 Ubeginning of our endowment. For many years, the James W. Ellsworth Founder - Elizabeth Park Capital Management Trust was our only form of endowment, and the earnings from it provided oper- John M. Fowler ’67 ating income to keep Western Reserve Academy financially solvent. Could he have ever imagined where his gift would lead? Ronald M. Harrington ’87 CEO - Edgepark Surgical Almost 90 years later, on June 30, 2010, our endowment was valued at $97.7 million. For the 2010 fiscal year, the endowment contributed $5.3 million to- Olin J. Heestand Jr. ’62 ward our operating budget. Over the last 10 years, it has provided an average of Andrew R. Midler ’79 25 percent of our operating income. General Partner - Savitr Capital Management During the 2010 fiscal year, our endowment returned a modest 8.7 percent. Richard W. Neu Currently, Cambridge Associates serves as our endowment consultant. In their Former CFO - Charter One Bank universe of endowments totaling nearly 400 institutions, our three-year return Timothy R. Managing Director - UBS Though the Ellsworth Trust still remains a separate legal entity, we view the Income Distribution 2009-10 Trust and the WRA Fund as our total endowment and report the results on a combined basis. The WRA Fund consists of 145 named funds representing both unre- stricted and restricted assets. As the Trustee, Key Bank, and predecessor financial gifts fees & stores institutions, had managed the investment activity of the Ellsworth Trust. While 8% 2% they accepted suggestions for investments, on occasion our views differed. Over Endowment the last several years, we worked with Key Bank to obtain control over the invest- 26% ment decisions. We now manage our endowment as one investment pool. Our investment policy allows passive investments, such as mutual funds, up to a maximum of 10 percent of our total endowment, or an active investment with a single fund manager up to 5 percent of the total endowment. The Investment Committee, with the help of Cambridge Associates, continually explores quality investment opportunities. The Committee is not adverse to holding cash when those opportunities cannot be found. Great schools strive to build great endowments. Substantial endowments grow because of sound investment policies and gifts from loyal alumni and trusted friends. Pioneer Women uring the 2009-10 Academic Year, the Pio- Executive Board neer Women of Reserve and the Dads Club 2009-2010 Ddecided to undertake the fund allocation Susan Rydell process together in an effort to simplify the process President of supporting special student experiences at Western Nancy Forhan Reserve Academy.
