How to download a CLAMS Library ebook to the Amazon Kindle Fire & How to return an eBook “early” (before loan expiration date)
Preparation: Set up an Amazon account if you don’t already have one. Register your Kindle Fire following device instructions. Become familiar with Kindle Fire icons and menu options. See: www.amazon.com/kindlesupport
What you need: the Kindle Fire, Wi Fi Access, a CLAMS Library Card, an Amazon account.
NOTE: You may download Kindle format ebooks directly on your Kindle Fire – there is no need to connect to a computer or laptop.
Note: If you find a title available only in EPUB format (not Kindle) follow the directions “How to download library EPUB ebooks on the Kindle Fire”
You may check out up to 5 titles from the CLAMS Download site on your account.
Wake up the Kindle Fire (turn it on, swipe) Tap “Web” (upper right)
Go to the CLAMS Digital Download site http://clamsnet.lib.overdrive.com Tap My Digital Account. Log in using your CLAMS Library Card Number. Search for a specific author or title. Most, but not all eBooks are available in Kindle format. Specify Kindle Book in format selection box. “Place a hold” on a title already checked out to another patron. You will receive an email when the title is available for checkout. Check “Only Show Available Titles” if you want to see titles you may borrow now.
Alternately: Tap Browse eBook Fiction or Browse eBook Non-Fiction
Check “Only Show titles with copies available” and tap Submit to see titles available for checkout now.
Select a title that has the Kindle Book symbol. Kindle Book
Add to cart Proceed to checkout Confirm checkout (make sure you have selected the Kindle format *before* tapping Confirm)
Tap Get for Kindle This opens the Amazon.com website You may be required to sign in to your Amazon account, if you are not already logged in. Select your Kindle device from the drop down list and Tap Get Library Book You will see a message that the ebook has been sent to your device. (If you see an additional Download button below this message on the website, ignore it)
On the Kindle Fire: Tap Books It you do not see the title you just downloaded Tap Quick Settings icon (upper right) Tap Sync An orange status bars shows the title downloading
When it completes downloading, enjoy!
How to return a library eBook “early” (before its due date) Tap “Web” and go to Amazon.com Login to your Amazon Account Click on: Your Digital Items Click on: Manage Your Kindle The books from CLAMS have a bold, orange “public library” after the title Find the book you want to return Tap: Actions Select: Return this book This removes the eBook from your account and makes it available for other patrons to borrow. When the return processes, (wait a minute or so), tap Actions, select “Delete from [your Amazon] library. On your Kindle Fire: Once the book is returned or deleted from your Amazon account, [loan ended] will appear next to the title Highlight the title & remove from device. Not *all* eBook titles are available in the Kindle format. If you find a title that is only available as an EPUB ebook, it is now possible to download the OverDrive Media app to allow you to read EPUB titles on your Kindle Fire. The app also allows download of MP3 Audiobooks.
What you need: Overdrive Media Console app An Adobe ID & Password * A CLAMS library card (current and no fines over $25) Wi Fi Internet access
*How to get an Adobe ID & Password If you do not have an Adobe ID, it is easiest first to visit http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/ to get one. Touch on “Sign In” on the upper right of the page. Touch “Create an Adobe Account.” You will be taken to a page where you are asked to supply some information. This is a secure site, but Adobe is not affiliated with CLAMS. Please fill in the required fields indicated with a red asterisk.
Steps: 1. Download the Overdrive Media Console app from the Apple Store onto your Kindle. 2. Open the Overdrive app, click on the menu button (three horizontal lines surrounded by a partial box), and select “Get Books”. 3. Search and select “CLAMS (Cape Libraries Automated Materials Sharing) or, your local CLAMS library. Select the star next to Cape Libraries… to save. 4. Touch the logo to open the app and select “Get Books”. 5. From here you can search for eBooks to check out and download. 6. When you find a title that you want, tap “Add to My Cart” (if it says “Place a Hold” all copies are checked out. You can place a hold on the item and be notified when it is ready.) Follow the prompts to confirm the checkout. When prompted, enter your library card number or Username and PIN. 7. When the item is checked out, tap “Download”. 8. The item will open in your Overdrive app. The first time you do this, you will be asked to authorize your Kindle with an Adobe ID. If you don’t have one, click “Get ID”. 9. To open your book, click on the menu button, tap “Bookshelf”, and then tap the book.
To return an ebook or audiobook early: 1. In the Overdrive app, go to the “Bookshelf”. 2. Tap the plus sign next to the book you would like to return. Tap on “Return/Delete” and choose “Return then Delete”.
