    eBook Installation This document will instruct you on the installation of an eBook reader (Adobe Digital Editions for PC and Mac, and BlueFire Reader for Android and iOS) and adding your eBook to your library. Please note that there are many eBook reader apps beyond Digital Editions and BlueFire. A complete list of compatible apps and devices can be found here. Smartphones and Tablets (iOS and Android) • Install BlueFire reader from either the App Store (iOS) or the Google Play store (Android). Tap the appropriate link to go directly to the download page. • Once the app has installed on your device, tap on the BlueFire icon to open it. • Enter credentials for an existing Adobe ID or create a new one. An Adobe ID is required to read DRM documents. • Return to your e-mail account and click the DRM license link above. • A web page will open with a dialog box asking what you want to do with the file. Tap on "Open in BlueFire Reader." • The file will download and install itself into your BlueFire library. This may take a few minutes. • Once the installation is finished, you will be given an option to "Open Now" or "Open Later". Select whichever you wish. • To access your document in the future, open the BlueFire app. The document is saved in your library and will be immediately accessible. Windows (PC) o Download the Adobe Digital Editions installer by clicking here. o Locate the file you just downloaded (ADE_4.0_Installer.exe) and double-click on it to run the installer.   • Hathitrust Preferred Internet Archive Book Package Overview
    HathiTrust Preferred Internet Archive Book Package Overview & Background As a by-product of the Internet Archive scanning process, a variety of different files and formats are available to everyone, everywhere. This differs from the Google output, which offers no file-level variations or options. However, this also means that files chosen for ingest into the HathiTrust repository must be carefully selected, with an eye towards both near-term and long-term utility. The process of selecting files that is described below attempted to balance the following important criteria: a baseline, cross-partner standard; functional consistency with the Google work products; a desire to keep the highest quality master images; a disinclination to discard useful information; and an attempt to minimize overall package size to reduce storage costs. Ingest into the HathiTrust repository will require pre-processing of the original file set described below in order to normalize files to an expected format. This normalization will allow HathiTrust processes to accommodate content from all partners. This process is currently in development and a link to the documentation of the process will be included here, once it is finalized. File Selection Criteria In the following section, the files selected for ingest into the HathiTrust repository are identified, along with a justification for why they were selected. Also listed are files that are available from the Internet Archive, but have not been selected. A description of each file can be found in the All Available Files & Characteristics section below. These questions covered everything from international membership and diversification of the collection, to ROI and IIIF, repository infrastructure and HathiTrust relevance to open scholarship. While we addressed many attendees’ questions during the meeting, the range of interests was too broad to allow adequate attention to answers during the meeting.     07/15/2011 Briefing Paper on Progress and Opportunities for HathiTrust Ithaka S+R for the HathiTrust Strategic Advisory Board 15 July 2011 Executive Summary The Strategic Advisory Board for HathiTrust, a library-based initiative to provide preservation and access for library content digitized by Google and other parties, is preparing for a Constitutional Convention in October 2011. At the Convention, representatives from the libraries that participate in HathiTrust will gather to discuss the future direction of the initiative. To help frame the agenda for the Convention, Ithaka S+R has conducted research on the attitudes and needs of existing HathiTrust partner libraries and libraries that do not yet participate, to help the Board frame the most important issues for the October meeting. Drawing on a survey of HathiTrust participating libraries, interviews with HathiTrust participating libraries and libraries that do not yet participate in HathiTrust, and other research, we see the following as important next steps and Convention discussion items for HathiTrust: • Clearly defining objectives for the next 3-5 years, possibly mapping out the rationale for those objectives in the context of a revised mission statement, and enhancing the pipeline of information about HathiTrust’s strategic priorities to partner libraries. Respondents to a survey of HathiTrust partner libraries and follow-up interviewees spoke in particular about the need for clear communication from the HathiTrust staff and leadership, noting in several cases that they have not always felt well apprised of contemplated new initiatives. To the extent that HathiTrust is able to provide a more constant flow of information about proposed initiatives, that would seem to be valued by partner libraries.
