Highlights of the 2019 Campaign Highlights of the 2019 campaign It has been a long and winding road to the April 17 elections. Insight recaps the twists and turns on the campaign trail. Aug 9, 2018 President Joko Widodo surprises many when he picks senior cleric Ma’ruf Amin as his running mate. While many expect him to choose an inuential gure from the Muslim community, the popular guess is former constitutional court chief justice Mahfud MD – not the chairman of the Indonesia Ulama Council who has a reputation for conservatism that seems at odds Sept 23 with Mr Joko. As this research shows, the interviewed buzzers were one of the driving forces behind the massive success of the fundamentalist Islamic Defenders Front (Front Pembela Islam, FPI) as they mobilized people to participate in the organization’s political rallies between 2016 and 2017. As the capital of the country, this regional election brings special meaning for the people, communities, and parties participating in this election to become the highest sovereign of this region. Philosophically, it will be easier to win the next national election when a certain party becomes the sovereign of this Special Capital Region of Jakarta. In this case, news media has a very important role in providing good and useful information to the people and the community. The independence of media is expected to provide balanced, neutral information because it may greatly determine the quality of the ongoing regional election. As the opposite, there is also a possibility in which media is used as a tool to build political power. That is why there is a new phenomenon in which many media owners are involved and even actively participated in politics in Indonesia. The dynamics of the current communication technology development is started to be taken seriously by the media owners.

  • Education Reform in Indonesia: Limits of Neoliberalism in a Weak State
EDUCATION REFORM IN INDONESIA: LIMITS OF NEOLIBERALISM IN A WEAK STATE A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN SOCIOLOGY MAY 2014 By Sulaiman Mappiasse Dissertation Committee: Hagen Koo, Chairperson Patricia Steinhoff Sun-Ki Chai Hirohisa Saito Barbara Watson Andaya Keywords: Neoliberalism, Education, Reform, Indonesia ABSTRACT This is a study about the recent neoliberal education reform in Indonesia. With the strong support of the people, Indonesia has undertaken a large-scale education reform since the late 1990s. The government was highly confident that this would make Indonesia’s education more efficient and competitive. After more than a decade, however, Indonesia’s education has not significantly improved. Contrary to expectations, the series of policies that was introduced has made Indonesia’s governance less effective and has deepened the existing inequality of educational opportunities. This study examines how and why this reform ended up with these unsatisfactory outcomes. The argument is that Indonesia’s domestic politics and history have interfered with the implementation of the neoliberal policies and led to a distortion of the reform processes. Although neoliberal globalization was a powerful force shaping the process of the reform, domestic conditions played a more important role, especially the weakening of the state’s capacity caused by the crisis that hit Indonesia in 1997/1998. In the process of decentralization, the new configuration of relations between the state, business groups and classes and the emergence of new local leaders brought about unintended consequences.

There are also no fundamental differences among parties over major policy questions. • The fractured nature of the Indonesian socio-political elite is instead reflected in the proliferation of small parties. This results in the necessity of multi-party coalitions, thus giving Indonesia’s largest party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), a tactical advantage. • The PDIP has floated the possibility of changing the laws to allow President Joko Widodo to stand again in 2024. Perhaps to sustain its leverage in a post-Widodo government, the PDIP is also advocating the revival of the formal Broad Outlines of State Strategy, which featured during the Soeharto era as overarching policy guidelines for each term of government.
