The Romanian Colony in Constantinople at the End of the 19Th Century

DOI: 10.17234/RadoviZHP.51.4 Between the King and the Sultan: the Romanian Colony in Constantinople at the End of the 19th Century The article focuses on certain results of a long-term research project which addresses a very specific aspect concerning Romanian-Ottoman relations after 1878: Romanian subjects, residents of the Ottoman Empire, perceived as a community under the pro- tection of the diplomatic and consular missions of Romania. The present contribution accords particular attention to the definition of this community and the legal status of the members of the colony registered with Romanian consulates in the imperial capital. A brief discussion of their ethno-religious profile and socio-economic char- acteristics is also included in the analysis. This is the first attempt to analyse several aspects concerning the Romanian multiethnic colony in Constantinople from different perspectives, such as occupations, nationality papers or the major problems which in- fluenced their status as foreign residents in the Ottoman Empire. The primary sources of data are the consular registers and correspondence between representatives of the Romanian state and the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs, with a special focus on the analysis of an unpublished volume of documents, no. 422, “Registration,” and dated 1867-1916, from the Romanian Diplomatic Archives, Constantinople fonds. Other alternative sources were also used, such as censuses, newspapers and memoirs, in order to reconstruct an image of the Romanian colony in Constantinople up to 1900. -

Arpad Kosztin, does show mercy: he does not accuse, does not point a finger but gives us a work of factual history. And this is important for this painful objectivity gives the measure of the work's credibility. Our author does not have to be introduced to our readers for everyone knows his book on the debunking of the Daco-Roman theory (entitled the Daco-Roman Legend, it was published in English in 1997 by Matthias Corvinus Publishing, in the USA and Canada); on Romania's expansion into Transylvania; as well as his numerours lively and outspoken but profound essays and articles in the daily press. -
The Portrait of a Romanian Diplomat: Mihail Burghele
CCI3 HISTORY THE PORTRAIT OF A ROMANIAN DIPLOMAT: MIHAIL BURGHELE Emanuil Ineoan, PhD Student, ”Babeş-Bolyai” University of Cluj-Napoca Abstract: Using an unpublished historical source, the diary of Mihail Burghele, we try to analyse the background and the political orientation of a Romanian diplomat during La Belle Époque and also the Romanian foreign political objectives in Southern Europe at the beginning of the XXth century. With Mihail Burghele begin the Romanian-Albanian diplomatic relations, since this was the first Romanian Minister Plenipotentiary sent in the spring of 1914 in Durres, the capital of Albania. His mission there took place in a time when this new Balkan state represented a problematic issue on the map of international relations on the eve of World War I. În arhondologia vechilor familii boiereşti moldovene un loc de seamă îl ocupă neamul Burghele care a numărat de-a lungul istoriei sale postelnici, medelniceri, spătari, ofiţeri şi alte asemenea ranguri ce i-au asigurat o prezenţă constantă în lumea ieşeană a secolelor XVIII- XIX1. Mihail Burghele, viitorul diplomat, este fiul lui Nicolae Burghele (doctor în Drept la Universitatea din Leipzig şi consilier al Curţii de Conturi) şi al lui Zoe Cerchez. Se naşte la Iaşi în 1 noiembrie 1864 fiind al cincilea fiu al familiei care a avut în total şase copii dintre care o fiică Zoe, Constantin şi Gheorghe, amândoi generali de armată, Nicolae, medic, secretar al Consiliului de Miniştri, mort în prizonierat la Burgas în martie 1917, Teodor, inginer, tatăl viitorului Ministru al Sănătăţii şi preşedinte al Academiei Române, doctorul Theodor Burghele.2 Mediul familial în care aceşti copii cresc, atât cât poate fi intuit din biografia tatălui, a fost unul impregnat de efervescenţa culturală a Iaşiului celei de-a doua jumătaţi a secolului XIX. -

A Multi-regional Research Network. Abstract: The main object of the present paper is to introduce the diplomats sent to represent the Romanian state in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Oslo, as heads of diplomatic missions. Did they have professional or human connections with the Nordic states? Were they moved from one legation in the Scandinavian world to another? In other words, were they specialists in Scandinavian matters? Were the Nordic states a professional attraction /a trampoline in the career of Romanian diplomats or were they `quiet` diplomatic missions, marginal in importance, less attractive to diplomats? In my attempt to provide an answer to these questions I found that most of those who took turns as head of legation in the Scandinavian countries had not previously been trained at the same missions. -

Dosarul unei recuperări, Centrul Cultural “Lucian Blaga” – Sebeş, Fundaţia Culturală “Lucian Blaga” – Sebeş, 2015, 600 p. + 209 ilustraţii The archives are some of the main repositories of information we appeal to as individuals, as a community or people. They represent a form of memory we go to for long term research or for immediate interests. We check almost on a daily basis their role and importance in society. Taking the risk of a reproof for exaggerating, I state that in any historical evocation, in any contemporary evaluation and in any future project, we cannot ignore data and ideas kept in archives as premises of any material or spiritual construction. As an institution, the archives in Romania identify their act of birth 170 years ago. The explanation for this tardive reality is to be found in both objective and subjective factors, which have been rigorously identified and analyzed by the historians of the Romanian archives. I am in a rush to underline that, despite all legal regulations, of the stage corrections, administrative, economic and financial measures to consolidate their structures and functionality, under the sign of organicity and efficiency, the institution of the archives has recorded in Romania serious dysfunctions and grave accidents (during war or calamities). With each of these, the informational content of Romanian archives has been affected. The subsequent efforts – no matter how consistent or well-intended – could only reconstruct and restore in a fragmentary and uncertain manner the segments of local and even national history – economic, ethnic, confessional, cultural a.s.o. -

Introduction Looking back across Romania‟s twentieth century, Romanian philosopher Emil Cioran once said: "Some countries are blessed with a sort of grace: everything works for them, even their misfortunes and their catastrophes. There are others for whom nothing succeeds and whose very triumphs are but failures. When they try to assert themselves and take a step forward, some external fate intervenes to break their momentum and return them to their starting point."1 Interestingly enough, this particular concept of fate has always been part of socio-political discourse in Romania. Often times the focus shifted towards the benefits of a suprastate, mirrored by what is often called a Romanian inability for decision- making. The idea of the impossibility for Romanians to make their own decisions and determine their own fate has, in fact, become a national cliché as of late. -
