This year's competition has seen many close games, especially at the semi final stage where Mid Cheshire College beat Old Sali ans 6-3 and Lymm did remarkably weil to see off Winnington Park 3-0 after extra time to prevent an all-Northwich final. This was Lymm's first defeat of Park for four years, anddoubly satisfying because it clinched a place for th e club in nexi season's Pilkingtoll Cup. Lymlll Skipper. Our re-introduction into the Cumberland League was a successful one in that we once again heard people talking about Aspatria Hornets and it stimulated interest in our club and the sport of rugby league. As with any sport and any season, truncated or not, there were highs and lows for the club. Some of the more notable highs for me were the first league win on home soil in over 14 years against Lowca and then the Cumbria Cup game against Kells. I think that was the biggest crowd the town has seen in a number of years and I know it gave the players and committee real encouragement. Despite the result not going our way, it demonstrated that the people of Aspatria have a real appetite for the thirteen-a-side code.

    Mark Lennon flying Clough Dec Spoilt for Choice Jan. 2018 Letter from the chair Jackie Knights Well I don’t think we could describe 2017 as one of our best flying years – however, as usual, Cumbrian pilots still made the most of every window. Between us, we managed to clock up over 1000 more points than last year in the Cumbria XC league – in roughly the same number of flights. Pretty amazing considering the weather. There didn’t seem to be any runs of consistently good flying conditions. Strong winds in the early part of the year gave way to a wet summer and autumn, meaning that we had to work hard and be vigilant to grab every opportunity to get in the air. In the background, the committee have continued to work to improve the club. My thanks go to all members of the 2017 committee. We have also had lots of help and support from non-committee members – thanks are due to (amongst others) Rick Livingstone, Ed Cleasby, Mike Harper, Richard Bungay, Ian “Barty” Bertram, Jocky Sanderson, Gordie Oliver, James Jackson, Jaysen Metcalfe, Pete Cunningham, Kev Woodward and Dave Toach. The Knowledge Base has grown in content and is all very well organised and accessible. A lot of effort has also been put in to ensure that our club coaching offer is clear and well set out. The club’s new Coaching Strategy is published on the website and signposted to new members. In addition to regular coaching days throughout the summer, members can also seek one-to-one coaching on an organised or ad-hoc basis.
