REFEREE RESPECT ETC

As always the match referee is very welcome at Carlisle. Without the referee we would not be able to enjoy the Game. The referee deserves respect at all times and there is no place for any form of abuse to be directed at the referee, either on or off the field. Players regularly make mistakes, and the match official is not perfect and he / she too will not always get it right.

If the referee does make an error of judgement that should never the signal for abuse from a player, coach, official or a spectator.

Remember that, in almost all cases the referee is a volunteer and provides a service to the game so that we can all enjoy it. People wanting to referee are in short supply, and one of the reasons given for the shortage of volunteers is, alleged abuse.

PLEASE RESPECT THE REFEREE AT ALL TIMES. THE REFEREE The playing enclosure is out of bounds at all times except to those authorised to be there by the game regulations. Spectators are asked to remain behind the barriers (where they exist), and where pitches do not have a permanent barrier, you are requested to stand well back from IS AN the touch line. This will allow the touch judge to officiate without hindrance, and also reduce the probability of injury to any player or spectator in the event of a collision! INTEGRAL Whilst people are free to encourage their team it is expected that supporters will use moderate PART OF language so as not to intimidate or offend others. There have been instances, particularly at junior and youth games, where there has been encroachment on the field, or dubious verbal encouragement from parents. This is not a good example to set. Lads and lasses need the OUR freedom to express themselves on the field of play without any undue intimidation from the sidelines. GAME Carlisle RFC will not hesitate to take appropriate action where necessary, Have a great day, RESPECT PLEASE .

MUMBLINGS Youth 9 For a week at least, we leave behind the rigours of the opening two months of league rugby. No rest though, with the 1st round of the Cumbria Cup likely to present a tough contest. Carlisle have waited a long time for a bit of cup success, and Kendal have not always been competitor’s in the county showpiece competition. Hopefully, the two Gossip 12 sides will put on a spectacle that will be a credit to the game, just as our recent league fixture. One thing is for sure, no one is likely to risk a wager on the outcome given the way results in have thrown up a variety of unlikely outcomes. Taking for granted often ends in disappointment. Sponsors 30 Carlisle beat Kendal, Kendal vanquish Vale of Lune, and on that basis a neutral might take a chance on Carlisle turning out a shock at Pow- derhouse Lane. We could have done with a little more finesse and not a little disruption with injuries. ! TEAM LISTS 35 Many rugby folk (probably including some Kendalians) had Kendal down as the runaway leaders of North 1 West this term, but it looks as though one or two other sides have serious intentions for the next step on the promotion ladder! The league is still all to play for and we intend to have s say in it, Respect Code 36 whether or not we succeed ourselves!

3 MR PRESIDENT CAPTAIN COMMENTS

Good afternoon; since the last time we were at home the clocks have changed; the weather has changed; but us letting games slip due to costly errors hasn’t changed. Last Saturday saw us lose on the road AT Vale of Lune by 25 pts to 20 pts, but grabbing a losing bonus point for

the first time this season was a positive. The lads are learning from their experiences, and the game was a good display of character, albeit that we let it slip away. It means we now have to wait until next season for that victory at Powderhouse Lane, and that is an achievement I have pencilled into my radar!

This week is a break from the league menu but it is not a foot off the gas, as today we wel- come back Kendal and they will arrive looking for revenge after the well fought out league Welcome to Warwick battle last month. 18.1 After a mark

The referee immediately blows the whistle and awards a kick to the player who made the mark.

The kick is awarded at the place of the mark. If the mark is made in the in-goal, the kick is awarded 5 metres from the goal line in line with where the mark was made.

The kick is taken at or behind the mark on a line through the mark.

The kick is taken by the player who made the mark. If that player cannot take the kick within one minute, a scrum is formed at the place of the mark with the ball thrown in by the player’s team. If the mark is in the in-goal, the scrum is 5 metres from the goal line, on a line through the mark.

The provisions of Law 21 - Free Kicks - apply to a kick awarded after a mark.

(A)

The team of the player who made the mark may choose to take a scrum.

B)

Where the scrum is. If the mark is in the field of play, the scrum is at the place ofthe mark, but at least 5 metres from the touchline. If the mark is in-goal, the scrum is 5 metres from the goal line on a line through the mark, and at least 5 me- tres from the touchline.

C)

Who throws in. The team of the player who made the mark throws in the ball. a)

They are expensive to maintain and your help and assis- tance to keep the fields and buildings in good order would be appreciated. Apart from being dangerous to anyone playing rugby or training, foreign objects left lying around the fields can cause untold damage to machinery. All coaches, players, managers and spectators are asked to ensure that objects and litter are not left littered around the ground. PLEASE DON’T COMPROMISE SAFETY.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Remembrance Parades are always held on the Sunday nearest to the 11th of November and this year the parades will take on special significance; 100 years since the end of the Great War and the final withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan after the longest “peacetime” demand on Brit- ish forces overseas. It also has a special meaning to us at Carlisle Rugby Club. Private David Murray (right), one of our former colts was killed on active service in Afghanistan in 2008. Obviously he will always hold a special place in the memory of his family and loved ones, but there are many around Carlisle Rugby Club who also remember him fondly and his prow- ess on the rugby field. Today we remember all those who sacrificed their lives so that we might live in relative peace! SUPPORT THE BRITISH LEGION - WEAR YOUR POPPY WITH PRIDE.

1ST XV CHAT So near yet so far last week from the trip to Lancaster. One ground where success seems to evade us; but despite the narrow reverse it could have all been oh so different. The game was disrupted in the early stages with Paul Halliday having to leave the field after a ‘poke’ in the eye! Several other knocks put a few off their stride, and eventually Josh Holmes had to retire too. That said, there was no lack of effort in a game that was played out at a frantic pace with the hosts just edging it on the day. Cup action today offers little respite, although at the time of writing the team for this afternoon wasn’t known, there could be some changes, enforced or oth- erwise. Stlll several people on the injured list but with a little luck the length of it will be shortened in time for the league visit of Broughton Park next Saturday. That game will be not be easy - ask Kendal!

14 CARLISLE SPORTS AWARD

Carlisle Sports Awards 2014

On behalf of the board and members of Carlisle Rugby Club, may I say what a privilege it was to be present at the Carlisle Sports Award dinner on Saturday 25 October. Given that rugby has never been nominated for any category within Car- lisle Sports Award since its inception; to receive two sporting accolades in a year is truly phenomenal, and one which every member of the successful teams should be extremely proud of.

Carlisle Under 15’s 2013/14 season, won the Junior Team of the Year, awarded for their tremendous record of playing all season unbeaten, developing players to such high standards that enabled representation at Cumbria County Level, North District Level and a place with Newcastle Falcons Academy. Captain Mike Newstead ac- cepted the award on behalf of the team, who were represented by Josh Watson, Jake Evans, John Short, Toby Huggon, Cameron Steele,

The players represented the club in impeccable style and were a true reflection of what rugby is all about; teamwork and camaraderie, making those family members present very proud of their achievement as a team and as individuals.

The second award of the evening to go to Carlisle RFC, was for the Senior Team of the Year, awarded for their successful season as a team culminating in reaching the semi-final stage of the National Colts Cup. This was presented to Henry Wain- wright, Captain of the Colts for 2013/14 season, accompanied by Tom Fuller, Lewis Fuller, and Jason Israel.

All the players proudly received the awards, reflecting on the time, effort and dedi- cation that goes into creating teams that work and play well together.

Recognition must also be paid to the men behind the scenes who make all this possible, in the case of the Junior Team, Ben Blain and Matt Pagan who work tire- lessly at weekly training and at weekend fixtures ensuring that the players receive high quality coaching and mentoring.

Likewise with the Colts, recognition must go to David Stout and Mel Cooper, who again give freely of their time every week to ensure that player development contin- ues with Carlisle’s home grown players. The work entails working with players indi- vidually and as a team to enable each one goes through the transition phase from youth rugby to rugby played at Colts level, with the ultimate goal being to play sen- ior rugby, both physically and mentally at the end of their two years in Colts. This has been ably demonstrated by the fact that the Colts receiving the award, now play for Carlisle First XV.

The results demonstrated by the teams are testament to the respect the players have for their coaches

Several members from sports represented at the awards evening passed on their congratulations for our outstanding success and wished us well in the future. They commented that it was good to have rugby recognised as proof that balls can be oval and not round!!!

COUGARS CORNER

Kati Brown writes: I’m pleased to say that Girl’s rugby will be starting up at Carlisle Rugby Club on Wednesday 12th November, with 5 sessions running before Xmas. The sessions will take place at 6pm until 7pm every Wednesday, with the last session before Christmas being on Wednesday 10th Decem- ber. The sessions will be open to girls aged between 12-18, from com- plete beginners to those who may have had some experience. The sessions will be good fun and good fitness so please circu- late the attached poster amongst anyone you think may be interested in coming along – the more the merrier. We don’t want it to cost a fortune for people just starting out but I would recommend hav- ing the right footwear. Rugby or football boots should be fairly accessible from places like Sports Direct or Chivers and there are lots of places sell- ing boots online. Waterproofs are also a good option this time of year and warm clothing, hats, etc – although you’ll be surprised how quickly people get warm when they are running around a rugby pitch. It may also be worthwhile purchasing a mouthguard for when we do contact activities in training. Your dentist can make one or you can buy one off the shelf in sports shops and mould it in hot water. Please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions at all. My mobile number is 07794406014. Kati

MAIN MATCH SPONSOR

During the season, match day sponsorship is invaluable to the club, and to those individuals, companies and organisations who choose to support rugby

in this way, we offer our sincere thanks. Your help to deliver rugby in our com-

munity is commendable, helping to raise the profile of Carlisle RFC.

Thank you very much for opting to sponsor the game today, and we trust that you, your colleagues, friends and guests, will have an enjoyable afternoon with us. Doubtless, friendships old and new will be rekindled or developed over a pint or two; and your support from the touchline for the team will be appreci- ated by the lads and the coaching staff.

Again, our appreciation for your support and if you know anyone who may like

to follow your example, then please point them in the right direction! LIMITED NORTHERN SECURITY SECURITY NORTHERN
