WELCOME TO BROUGHTON P

A special welcome this afternoon as for many clubs, it could be a to Broughton Park and we trust long hard slog. REFEREE RESPECT ETC

As always the match referee is very welcome at Carlisle. Without the referee we would not be able to enjoy the Game. The referee deserves respect at all times and there is no place for any form of abuse to be directed at the referee, either on or off the field. Players regularly make mistakes, and the match official is not perfect and he / she too will not always get it right.

If the referee does make an error of judgement that should never the signal for abuse from a player, coach, official or a spectator.

Remember that, in almost all cases the referee is a volunteer and provides a service to the game so that we can all enjoy it. People wanting to referee are in short supply, and one of the reasons given for the shortage of volunteers is, alleged abuse.

PLEASE RESPECT THE REFEREE AT ALL TIMES. THE REFEREE The playing enclosure is out of bounds at all times except to those authorised to be there by the game regulations. Spectators are asked to remain behind the barriers (where they exist), and where pitches do not have a permanent barrier, you are requested to stand well back from IS AN the touch line. This will allow the touch judge to officiate without hindrance, and also reduce the probability of injury to any player or spectator in the event of a collision! INTEGRAL Whilst people are free to encourage their team it is expected that supporters will use moderate PART OF language so as not to intimidate or offend others. There have been instances, particularly at junior and youth games, where there has been encroachment on the field, or dubious verbal encouragement from parents. This is not a good example to set. Lads and lasses need the OUR freedom to express themselves on the field of play without any undue intimidation from the sidelines. GAME Carlisle RFC will not hesitate to take appropriate action where necessary, Have a great day, RESPECT PLEASE .

Rocke on cup duty v Kendal in cup last week Captain 4 MORT’S MUMBLINGS

Well, the Cup has come and gone for another Youth 9 season and the long wait for silverware will be transferred to next season! It’s not that we couldn’t have beaten Ken- dal at Warwick Road last week; we beat ourselves instead! Clearly there is a need for a little more steely determination Gossip 12 and concentration in our play. So much looked promising for much of the game, and with five minutes remaining, and having had them on the back foot for much of the game, we let the barriers down, and in they went for a brace of tries to seal the right of passage to the next round. Sponsors 30 Lessons will be learnt, and for those that were beating themselves up after the game - don’t - everyone did their damndest. The disappointment last week was the fact that TEAMSHEET 31 we let the match slip in the dying embers of the game, hith- erto this season, a period in games when we have been strong and deliberate.

Back to league action this afternoon gives us the chance to Respect Code 32 improve our league standing but beware, Broughton Park have been sending out warning signals with their results! 3 MR PRESIDENT CAPTAIN COMMENTS

Last Saturday is a weekend we don’t want to remember, a game that was in

the bag with five minutes to go and when a lack of concentration, skills and decision making let us down. But, we have to dust ourselves down and get back on the horse, and once again learn from our mistakes; a regular line now in these columns! It feels as though the county cup is not meant to be at this club, and I don’t know why!

4 4 CUMBRIA RFU Like many other clubs and organisations, Cumbria RFU are finding financial life a bit tough at the moment, and some tough decisions have been made, one casualty being the under 20 programme. They are not alone, with several other counties having taken similar actions. Worrying also, is the fact that some staff have been put on notice. With the World Cup approaching we should be looking to de- velop the game further, rather than be looking to make sav- ings. Any ideas to help, the county officialdom will be glad of any constructive ideas to help.

YOUTH RUGBY

Recently, a combined under 15s / under 16s side took to the field at Netherhall and came away following a comprehensive 36 pts to 12 pts victory. . Whilst the city side ran away with thje result in the end, they were held at bay for lengthy periods as their hosts played some excel- lent and entertaining rugby. It’s great to see the Maryport outfit fielding youth teams again, really thanks to the hard work and dedication of Neil Carruthers and Mike Scott.

Carlisle had three players representing the combined Cumbria / Dur- ham / Northumberland squad at Macclesfield v the other three northern counties. Sadly, our lads were beaten 34 pts to 12 pts but neverthe- less gace a good account of themselves in their highest representative outing to date. MORT is eating normally again this week after the other half returned from a spell in the Canaries! As part of his recuperation from sur- gery, PLUMS is now also recovering from a tiring trip to Twickers last week for the All Blacks. The hardest part was sitting still during all the excitement in fear of damaging the back again! Survived. President GEOFF JACKSON had a surprise party after the match last week to celebrate his 78th birthday. Someone let slip and now we can say a belated “Happy Birthday” and for many more to come. C l u b v i c e president, ALAN TIFFEN (and his wife) had a lovely surprise last week- end. There was a knock on the door at home last one evening; on opening their daughter had arrived unannounced from Australia to help mum and dad celebrate their Golden Wedding this weekend. Lovely surprise. Mr Real Ale, DAVID ATKINSON, seen last Saturday night approaching a state of inebriation. The beer was stronger than even he had thought! Seen on his own at well known eatery last week, twin J Holmes demolishing no less than three double cheese- burgers, two large fries, twenty chicken nuggets and a large Coke. It seems “Matthew” is the romance name of the month; MATTHEW LITTLE recently back from a dirty weekend away in Glas- gow and MATTHEW PAGAN , currently in KansasCity ordering an In- terflora bouquet to be sent to Crosby Nursery! Who knows what could be next? MARTIN BURNETT took some ex Carlisle “legends” to Twickers last weekend to see Ritchie McGraw wreck England hopes. Senior, Barrington, the Cooper boys, Forlow, Blackadder, Cowx and Simpson were in the crowd. Martin said the weekend was his one last party prior to the start of intense training for the Barcelona marathon (reported last week). Ex Carliol, SIMON BLACKADDER, is still play- ing and now skipper of Stourbridge 4th XV. Carlisle referee, DEAN LYTHGOE, looks to be on the move. Currently an assis- tant head at Trinity School, he has been named as the head of a new senior academy currently under construction outside Liverpool and opening September next year. (It had to be outside Liverpool to ensure the building survived)! Former Carlisle prop, HARRY MARSHALL, chatting to Burnett whom he bumped into last week, said he liked our new prop - Jason Israel! Good job MB was being tactful ‘ cos a few second later he was asking Tom Graham what had happened to the new Irish prop - who was standing with Tom at the time. A quick scan of the Broughton Park team sheet reveals an appearance from who is likely to be an & Carlisle exile, and now working in - LEE ASKEW. It must be him, there simply can’t be two of a kind! Best wishes to MIKE LAIDLAW who, if he hasn’t al- ready had it, is waiting for more joint replacement surgery. Good luck.

14 LATE NEWS - YOUTH

Congratulations to Mike Newstead of Carlisle Under 16s who was the sole representative for Carlisle at last weekend’s final under 16s North Trial as CND were beaten by . De- spite suffering three defeats the CND coaching staff including our very own Graham Kidd were pleased with the display shown by all players. Hopefully some will progress onto achieving a full North Trial in December!

Sticking with the U16s and unfortunately they were on the wrong end of the results losing 26- 20 to Blyth. Carlisle were 15-7 in front at half time but lack of numbers proved costly in the second half and despite some exceptional offensive play from no. 12 Ross Barton they were unable to convert pressure into points. This weekend they undertake a tour to Greater Man- chester taking in Ormskirk and Vale of Lune. A reminder that with the weather closing in, all coaches should pay attention to circulations on pitch allocations, and training night allocations. It is hoped the all weather surface will be avail- able from time to time. Can I please remind those using the changing rooms on a Wednesday evening to ensure all lights are switched off and doors locked when leaving the premises?

COUGARS CORNER Cougars seem to be getting their act together again after a spell in the doldrums. Three victories over Darlington (25 - 5), Hull (77 - 0) and Manchester (39 - 5) has moved the girls into second slot in Champion- ship 2 North (above). Prop, Lucy Meadley is leading the way with five tries in the last two games (since when last was the leading try scorer a prop?) and Hannah Sherlock with five over three fixtures, whilist number eight, Holly Freestone has run in four. After the away game in the cup (tomorrow) at Ormskirk, there are three home games in the league - Preston Grasshoppers, leaders Northwich, followed by . The latter failed to fulfil the opening game of the season at Warwick Road and now have to play their “home” game away, as punishment for dropping out of the earlier game. Training for girls aged 12 to 18 years should have started on Wednesday night gone, but because of sickness amongst the coaching staff, had to be postponed until next Wednesday. All qualifying kids welcome.

BALL SPONSOR

Match ball sponsorship has become a regular feature in recent years, and a relatively inexpensive way to support the club, and the kind- ness of those who choose to opt for that style of sponsorship is very much appreciated. (£50 +VAT). If you would like to sponsor in the future, please give Tiff a call on the number below. Special thanks for sponsoring the match ball this afternoon to: SUE & BILL GLENDINNING

Interested in sponsoring a match or a match ball...... please speak to John Tiffen or give him a call on 01228 513383.

MAIN MATCH SPONSOR

During the season, match day sponsorship is invaluable to the club, and to those individuals, companies and organisations who choose to support rugby in this way, we offer our sincere thanks. Your help to deliver rugby in our com- munity is commendable, helping to raise the profile of Carlisle RFC.

Thank you very much for opting to sponsor the game today, and we trust that you, your colleagues, friends and guests, will have an enjoyable afternoon with us. Doubtless, friendships old and new will be rekindled or developed over a pint or two; and your support from the touchline for the team will be appreci- ated by the lads and the coaching staff.

Again, our appreciation for your support and if you know anyone who may like

to follow your example, then please point them in the right direction!
