Today is the third league outing of the season, and much too soon for doom and gloom. Losing players who have moved on is an easy excuse, especially as there have been relatively few new faces. Traditionally, we have developed our own youngsters, a policy that has served us well in the past, and will do so in future.

Rugby at our level is largely an amateur game, although we are all aware that some clubs poach talent with the lure of under the table payments, otherwise known as the “brown envelope brigade”. Unless there is a change of direction within the club we will not be changing our policy, if for no other reason than we simply can not af- ford to go down that path.

In general, the social life of society has altered over the last few years. Once upon a time (it’s not a bedtime story) rugby demands were easily accommodated in the work life cycle. However, juggling varied working hours with demands of a family, often now means that rugby is not always the priority - at all amateur levels. We could get annoyed about the attitude adopted by some, but that would only make matters worse.

A lot of work is put into encouraging, the development and coaching of players, so it is not for the want of trying, but patience is called for from all quarters or, at the very least, some constructive ideas as to how we can improve things.

If anyone thinks the foregoing is all of a moan the so be it; but loyalty, teamwork and co-operation is everything within the meaning of “club”!

To all teams playing this weekend, and there are plenty - three matches this after- noon, colts and women along with all the junior rugby tomorrow - try your very best and good luck to all.

MORTS’ MUMBLINGS MORTS’ Guide Dogs has been adopted as the official club charity for the current season. The Sportsman’s Dinner at the end of the season will have a new theme with the proceeds being divided between junior / youth rugby and Guide Dogs. Look out for details in due course.

Any support for Guide Dogs will be greatly appreciated.

MATTY LITTLE (now 1st XV gofa) has had more knee surgery. Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Having summered the other side of the pond, Gossip has learnt that RYAN FEENEY is not as assiduous as he once was with his training routine, and that de- spite now living only five minutes away from the club! (Paul Halliday didn’t snitch on you)! GORDON MAUDLING seems to be losing his grip! Apparently after training on Tuesday this week he was trying to serve the soup and with not a lot of success. He managing to spill it ALL over himself with none in the soup bowls. TOM GRA- HAM was gutted. Thanks to the ground staff at Carlisle Utd who have been looking after our grounds whilst our man, MATT HENRY, is away on holiday. TIM HUGHES is scheduled to be back this afternoon after a couple of weeks away with his new fiancée (not that he had an old one). Let’s hope he hasn’t spent too much energy on holiday and that he still has an eye for a hole in the defence! Thanks to JOE ANDERSON for his interesting match report for the Birkenhead Park match - can be seen on the website. Also published in News & Star. And we all thought he wouldn’t have the time to write it because neutral observers claim that he is not as frequent about the club as was his want! Someone called Hannah

seems to be demanding more of his time (if not expertise)! Extra volunteers needed please to help with various jobs on Sunday, 27th October when the North Under 18 Festival comes to Warwick Road. Car park and gate keepers needed most of the day. Names please to STEWART SIMPSON or KEITH HALL. JULIE HOPE has returned to play for the Cougars after a brief spell (from the start of the season) at Darlington Mowden Park. Just shows that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. One or two more new players are also on the horizon for the Cougars. Those amongst us who are classified as LITTER LOUTS - please stop leaving plastic bottles, kit and other rubbish lying around the grounds after matches / train- ing. There are plenty of rubbish bins around the place. Plastic bottles and the like arte causing damage to our maintenance equipment, and just as important, shred- ded plastic on the fields may cause injury. COLUMN GOSSIP WARNING TO ALL PLAYERS (& OTHERS) - Please DO NOT take kit bags into the clubhouse after games. Dumped all over the hallway, they block exits to toilets ands other facilities, as well as being a fire hazard in an emergency. Bags so left, may be removed without warning. AFTER MATCH MEALS - are available for all players and match officials on pro- duction of a meal voucher. Anyone else requiring a meal will be asked to pay £3.00 - thanks, but we are not a charity for all comers! Having starred in the NHS Breastfeeding Campaign during last season, former captain STEVE STAMPER and his wife NICHOLA, are celebrating the birth of number two child early hours of the morning of 10th September — weighed in at 7 lbs 12 oz with the title of Maggie Violet Stamper. Typical woman, entered the world ruling the roost and making sure Steve couldn’t get a good nights sleep. Congratulations to all involved. Stamps said he would down today for a drink! MEMBERSHIP SUBSCRIPTION REMINDER - if you haven’t renewed your club membership yet, please do so as soon as possible, or you will lose your discount benefits because your “swipe card” will be cancelled. PATRON’S PRIVELEGE CLUB - renewal reminders will be going out soon to those who are already members and invitations to others who would like to consider

joining. Thanks.

GETTING SENT OFF this season brings with it a new dimension, Until now a player sent off could continue to play until such time as their case was dealt with by the disciplinary panel. Now, a player sent off will be immediately suspended from playing all rugby and will not be able to play again until a sanction has been deter- mined by the relevant panel. This new procedure applies at all levels of the Game,

ADMISSION FEES for entry to 1st XV (and other selected) matches have been in- creased to £4. It is excellent value for an afternoon of sport and includes the match programme, and if you are a driver and not a club member, you can park your car too. Increasing costs meant we had little option other than to raise the charge. Compared to some places we visit it is a “snip”.

FREE PROGRAMME BOTTLE DRAW: there is a bottle of LIQUOR on offer as a prize with each issue of our match programme. Only one copy of the programme will contain the lucky logo that will entitle the holder of that programme to the prize. You need to find a small picture of a Guiness rugby ball hidden somewhere your programme. To claim your prize you must do so before 6.00pm on the date of the match, producing your programme for validation to either Dave Morton or Stewart Rawes

NEWCASTLE FALCONS ‘A’ will play WORCESTER ‘A’ at Warwick Road on Mon- day, 28th October at 7.00 pm. Come along and see some of the stars of the future.

SPORTSMAN’S DINNER 2014 - this season will be at The Shepherd’s Inn on FRI- DAY, 2nd MAY 2014. Please put the date in your diary and more details will be forthcoming in due course. It will be jointly organised with Guide Dogs, the pro- ceeds being split between the club and Guide Dogs.

CLUB ANNUAL DINNER & AWARDS NIGHT - this annual event will be held in the Club on Friday, 9th May 2014..

NEW GOAL POSTS have been erected on the 1st XV pitch. They were one of 50 sets made available by the RFU, along with the new post protectors. Carlisle were one of the lucky clubs to apply for kit, being another (two in one county!). The 3rd XV pitch will be furnished the original posts from 1st XV pitch.

OUR team of volunteers who man the gate and car park on match days and other occasions could do with a few more volunteers to ease the load. They do a fine job between them and special thanks to Stewart who does the organising. Interested,

YOU MIGHT LIKE TO KNOW THAT.... KNOW TO LIKE MIGHT YOU then please get in touch with Stewart - he will be delighted to hear from you.

NEW SCOREBOARD - trialled at the end of last season, the new electronic score- board will now be in full use. Special thanks are due to Heineken whose kind spon- sorship has covered the cost of the project. Also, thanks to Stewart Rawes who has spent a lot of time programming the laptop with information to display on the scoreboard.

CLUB SHOP - the amount of stock held in the club shop has been dramatically re- duced, although some items do remain on the shelves. Shop opening hours are displayed on the shop door, otherwise you will now be able to buy all your club goods on line through the club shop - go to www.pitchero.com/clubs/carlislerugby/ and then follow the links to O.Neills where you will find and array of club kit - new cargo shorts have been popular so far. Support O’Neills and we make money too! 14

RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION 5 Core Values of Our Game

TEAMWORK Team work is essential to our sport. We welcome all new team members and include all because working as a team enriches our lives. We play selflessly: working for the team, not for ourselves alone, both on and off the field. We take pride in our team, rely on one another and understand that each player has a part to play. We speak out if our team or sport is threatened by inappropriate words or actions RESPECT Mutual respect forms the basis of our sport. We hold in high esteem our sport, its values and traditions and earn the respect of others in the way we behave. We respect our match officials and accept our decisions. We respect opposition players and support-

ers. We value our coaches and those who run our clubs and treat clubhouses with consid- eration.

ENJOYMENT Enjoyment is the reason we play and support . We encourage players to enjoy training and playing. We use our sport to adopt a healthy lifestyle and build life skills. We safeguard our young players and help them have fun. We enjoy being part of a team and part of the rugby family. DISCIPLINE Strong discipline underpins our sport. We ensure that our sport is one of controlled physical endeavour and that we are honest and fair. We obey the laws of the game which ensure an inclusive and exciting global game. We support our disciplinary sys- tem, which protects our sport and upholds its values. We observe the sport's laws and regulations and report serious breaches. SPORTSMANSHIP Sportsmanship is the foundation upon which rugby union is built. We uphold the rugby tradition of camaraderie with teammates and opposition. We observe fair play both on and off the pitch and are generous in victory and dignified in defeat. We play to win but not at all costs and recognise both endeavour and achievement. We ensure that the wellbeing and development of individual players is central to all rugby activity

ALSO PLEASE NOTE

REFEREES are an integral part of our game. There is a severe shortage (in Cumbria) of officials throughout the county, and clubs have been warned that, unless more people come forward and take up “the whistle”, there could be a serious impact on the game. At Carlisle we have a number of senior referees and also several people who officiate at junior levels.

ETIQUETTE & CODES OF CONDUCT OF CODES & ETIQUETTE In recent years there has been an unwelcome trend of verbal abuse of referees across the country, and that is one of the reasons cited for the reduction in numbers. At Carlisle RFC we do not condone abuse of any kind, be it verbal or otherwise, and we will take all neces- sary steps to ensure that any one found to have been guilty of such conduct, and any member of club finding themselves in that position can expect a severe sanction.

The referee is a volunteer and out to enjoy their day of sport. He / she may make mistakes just as player may do. Such mistakes should not be the signal of any form of abuse di- rected at the referee, or for that matter, at anyone else. PLEASE RESPECT THE REFEREE AT ALL TIMES

THE PRESIDENT

WRITES

A very warm welcome to everyone to Warwick Road today for what I hope will be an excellent game of rugby. Rugby continues to evolve and it some- times difficult to keep up with all the changes that are foisted upon us by both the IRB and the RFU. Nevertheless, we always seem to manage and adapt to what is expected of us.. Recently installed as your President for a two year stint, I would like to thank my immediate predecessor, David Rawling for a job well done, al- though he is not quite finished with his duties - he is still a board member and is the club referee con- tact for senior rugby. I am delighted with the way the teams at the club have been prepared for the new season and I am hopeful that they will all reap just rewards. A very special welcome to Warrington to Carlisle today. It is many years since we last met in a com- petitive setting and I look forward to some good rugby. Geoff Jackson - President

CAPTAIN’S CRACK

Not the perfect start to the season for us! We have been very disappointing so far by our own high standards. Last season we had only 2 games where we came away with nothing, thus far we have had 2 games, and come away with nothing. We have talked in depth about the games played and what we have done wrong and how we can change the trend.

We have not become a poor team over night. But I do think that we haven’t adapted to the fact that teams target us now. We were a top 4 side for most of last season and that big target on our back has not helped us.

All of that said we are doing the right things. Training has been excellent. Spirit is high and we are confident of turning the tide today. We welcome Warrington, another side that in my 12 years playing 1st XV I have not encountered. After they ran Birkenhead Park close

we are expecting a very, very tough game. MATCH DAY NOTES DAY MATCH We are not a going to panic, a 26 game season is a hell of a long period. Turning the fortunes round starts today with a huge team effort and a win at Warwick Road. Good luck. Bobby Sherlock

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR PATRONAGE

AND SUPPORT - IT IS VERY MUCH

APPRE3CIATED. ENJOY THE RUGBY AND A

PINT AFTERWARDS IN THE CLUB!

NEWS Last week the Crusaders entertained Wigton Wanderers at Warwick Road in an entertaining match from two committed teams. Still getting used to playing as a unit, the Carlisle side were eventually outwitted by their guests who recorded a nar- row victory. Egremont are the visitors this afternoon and the second string need to start picking up the home points if they are to make any progress in the Cumbria 1 League.

Sadly, the Hornets could not raise a full squad to make the trip to Netherhall last week and the game was called off on the Friday evening, although there is a suspi- cion of some brinkmanship from the west, where there is also a doubtful record of getting a team together. Still we’ll take the rap and see what happens when the return game is scheduled.

Geoff Grieves does a sterling job marshalling the Hornets troops, but he could do

with a little more loyalty from a few who, seem to think that games should only be fulfilled when they feel like it, and not when the rest of the lads want to play. Come on chapds - play the game! TABLE - CRUSADERS

COLTS CRACK Colts lose away to Alnwick 19-15

After change to the league fixture (Darlington cancelled the game for the 15th) Colts were able to arrange a late fixture with Alnwick the day before. The game kicked off at 4pm on Saturday 14th September, early play for both teams was heavily contested with the firstthree points coming after seventeen minutes of play from the boot of Israel from a forced error by Alnwick at the ruck. At twenty five minutes, injury to full back .+ forced a reorganisation in the backs. With 2 minutes to go in the first half Alnwick score and convert the try.

Half time Alnwick 7- 3 Carlisle

Five minutes into the second half Alnwick work a good move from the back of the scrum and sees a try scored on the blind side. Colts continue to apply pressure and for the nextten minutes are camped in the Aln- wick half. Again forced pressure sees Alnwick give away a penalty at the ruck. Quick tap penalty sees Lung through with a try scored. With eight minutes to go; the colts dominated, playing in and behind Alnwick lines, with ball secured and three phases of rucks sees Davidson go over, with Israel con- verting the try. Colts continue to play in the Alnwick half, but with one minute to go, are penalised for side entry at the maul. The resulting penalty allowed Alnwick to score a con- verted try. Just enough time for the Colts to kick off before the final whistle is blown. Final Score Alnwick 19-15 Carlisle Colts The start to the season has been promising so far, the team is well balanced with a good mix of both senior and junior colts. The two pre league games have identified key areas for the coaches to work on.

The first league fixture is tomorrow at home against Sunderland, kick off 12.30pm.

COUGARS CHATTER

The a Cougars beaten at home

by Lucy Meadley

Cougars show spirit but come away empty handed.

The Cougars played their first home game of the season on Sunday hoping to build on their narrow victory at Birk- enhead the previous week. In Sundays wet and windy weather both teams set out to attempt to play the conditions in front of them, playing with the wind in the first half it was the Leeds side who got onto the score sheet twice to make the half time score 0-10. It was two silly mistakes from the Cougars that led to the tries but unfortunately it resulted in the momentum swinging in favour of the Leeds team and they continued to grow through the second half.

The Cougars battled hard and were forced into 2 early replacements with full back Vic Parker leaving the field with a

hamstring injury, a reshuffle in the backs saw Laura Rowell make her Cougars debut, her performance lifted the Cougars with the best line break of the day but unfortunately she too had to leave the field with a nasty injury on the stroke of half time, an xray revealed a fracture in her ankle.

This led to another reshuffle and the Cougars being forced into bringing on their last sub with Katie Harper slotting into the second row and Louise Lamont moving onto the wing. With the wind in their favour in the second half the Cougars were hoping to claw back some points and knew they were still in the game. Unfortunately there was no way back and the Cougars conceded an early try. Solid defending in the second half kept the Leeds outfit out even when under great pressure on their 5m line. The away team got the final score of the game on the final whistle to deny the Cougars a losing bonus point.

The final score was 0-22 and the Cougars go away knowing what they need to work on in the next few weeks to improve their game. Next week they are away to Waterloo who finished unbeaten at the top of the league last sea- son. Anyone who wants to give womens rugby a go should contact Hannah on 07912110785.

Match Report for Carlisle RFC Under 16s

Date: Sunday 15th September 2013. Kick-off; 11.00am Venue: Blaydon Opponents: Blaydon RFC Result: Won Score: 0 - 15

Carlisle U16s travelled away from home last Sunday and secured their first win of the season, 15 – 0 at Blaydon, Gateshead.

For a good bit of the first half, both teams managed to prevent the other from making an impression, with both packs working hard at the scrum and breakdown and the wind and rain made line outs somewhat unpredictable. As well as the pack, Carlisle’s backs showed themselves to be quick and on a number of occasions they threatened only for their passing to let themselves down in the greasy conditions.

Eventually the backs received the ball from the scrum just outside the Blaydon 22 and swiftly swung the ball out left. Great cover play saw the Blaydon defence opened up and finally Fly half Struan Kyle offloaded to winger Owen Brinsden who sprinted into the left corner to score Carlisle’s first. The conversion was short in the difficult conditions.

Blaydon fought back and only determined defence on the Carlisle line prevented a Blay- don forward from scoring as the ball was dropped for a knock on.

5 – 0 at half time.

12 minutes into the second half and some great work from the pack at the maul, gained precious yards and from the subsequent ruck another drive from the pack saw Prop Max Graham drop over to score the visitor’s second try. No conversion.

Shortly afterwards substitute winger Patrick Noutch showed his pace to sprint off to score in the right hand corner for the third. The tight angle and wind made the conver- sion once again extremely difficult and it went short.

Carlisle played very well, with an excellent spirit from the team which has been evident

since the start of the season. It felt as though we could have scored more, but decisions NEWS YOUTH & JUNIOR seemed to go against us. None the less, a sound result, with plenty of work still to look at during training.

G Telford

Special thanks to all those who have helped over the last couple of weeks or so with the membership and registration process. A lot of hard work was done by many and a vote of thanks to Hazel Jackson who acts as the official junior and youth registration officer for updating the records.

Support is always very welcome, but then we also need helpers on a Sunday morning with such things as fund raising - selling of raffle tickets and the like. The membership and training fees only go a small way to covering the overall cost of putting rugby on, so any additional helpful will be welcome.

Everyone is kindly reminded to set a good example to the youngsters who are playing and training at Warwick Road. Great support is one thing but over enthusiasm and mis- placed vocal encouragement can sometimes have the opposite effect! 25

ABOUT THE NEIGHBOURS

Starting higher up the pyramid, PENRITH had a nightmare day trip to Beverley last week in National 3 North. Apart from a heavy defeat, ap- parently their newly acquired scrum half from NZ was injured and could be a long term injury candidate. Also a red card was issued for another from Winters Park. In our own league, KENDAL overcame Altrincham Kersal by a good margin, and that after their trouncing at the hands of Wirral the previ-

ous week. KIRKBY LONSDALE entertained Wirral, losing only by a narrow margin. Work all that out then! WIGTON were on the road to Liverpool St Helen’s and despite being 19 pts in arrears at one stage, they fought back, losing by 32 pts to 31 pts. A great fight back, but not just quite enough! Down in North / Lancs Cumbria League, ASPATRIA travelled to newly promoted , coming off second best, and losing a player to a red card. Near neighbours at CREIGHTON entertained the lads from Cumbria’s favourite coastal resort, SILLOTH. By all accounts a bit of a feisty af- fair from which the guests took the honours in a 15 pts to 10 pts result, as well as picking up a red card into the bargain. Apparently, the refe- ree was unfairly targeted after the game - come of chaps - it’s not on! IRB - RFU - COUNTY IRB - probably the two matters of interest to emerge from the Dublin powerhouse are, the changes to the scrum laws (see elsewhere in the programme; and the alteration to discipline regulations. Any player now sent off for whatever reason, will remain suspended until their case has been adjudicated on by the relevant discipline panel.

RFU - have recently announced the availability of substantial grant monies through Sport to help with the creation of satellite sports clubs in the community GENERAL NEWS & INFORMATION (1) INFORMATION & NEWS GENERAL COUNTY - the Cumbria Cup made an early start this season on 31st August. Penrith were victorious over Workington; Wigton made sure that the Aspatria grip on the Cup was short lived - they overturned their near neighbours. Carlisle made it through at Upper Eden by one point and Whitehaven went our to local rivals St Benedict’s. The recent draw for the semi finals was made in the Carlisle club. Games have to be played on or before 14th March 2014. Carlisle v St Benedicts and Penrith will be visited by Wigton.

THE “SCOOP” HALLIDAY INTERVIEW THIS WEEK - TOM GRAHAM

At what age did you first become interested in rugby? Aged 9 or 10 (before I developed)!

Best player played with? Chris Harris, Matt Charters, Rob Miller but probably Ray Higgins!

Biggest influenced (apart from lager)? My brother Joe who is currently a pro with Leeds & George Graham Snr, who was always willing to pass on advice during my junior days (have I grown up yet) down at the club.

Best moment at Carlisle? Winning a county cup during youth days; winning a forward dominated match at Widnes last season, but probably playing in the Ray Higgins / Dave Murray memorial matches in memory of two great lads.

Best advice received? When carrying the ball make the try line. As you can see, advice about fitness...!

Best thing about playing for Carlisle? Local club with “everyone mucks in” attitude, the new professional approach and the social side.

Now for some questions about the lads:  Most skilful - Lee Brumpton  Quickest - Euan Foster (questionable)  Slowest - myself or Olly Ridley  Least likely to buy a drink - easily Joe Anderson  Least like to be stuck on a desert island with - no offence Alex, but I’d get sick of talking to myself  Funniest - David Morton

BITS & PIECES NOTEPAD PIECES & BITS  Best trainer - Scott Brennan, trains and then works night shift (Brummo just pretends to work nights)

 Worst trainer - Lee Brumpton who miraculously re-appeared after pre-season -  Biggest jam eater / Popeye Impersonator - Gary Hewer  Best child bearing hips - Graham Kidd  Tough nut - Colin Jackson  One of the lads that isn’t a lad / hairdressers car - Matt the physio

That enigmas that is PETER RIDDLE sent in the picture (right), entitled “THE HARDEST THING ABOUT BEING A GUIDE DOG!”

REFEREES, as we are regularly reminded, are in short supply throughout Cumbria. At Carlisle we provide more

GOSSIP EXTRA EXTRA GOSSIP referees to the society than any other club in the county, so it was little bit disconcerting this week to be told, due to a misunderstanding, that we would have to find two referees to handle 2nd & 3rd XV games, all because that pedantic society official (sorry Norman) had seen his own a**e!

A gentle reminder to ALL OUR COACHES that, apart from the obvious part of the CV is to be able to coach effectively; but their are other responsibilities regarding welfare, safety and safeguarding. Please bear this in mind, and there is now a copy of the rugby bible, the RFU Handbook for every section of the club to refer to.
