Landmark 4 Brocken ® On the 17th of November, 2015, during the 38th UNESCO General Assembly, the 195 member states of the United Nations resolved to introduce a new title. As a result, Geoparks can be distinguished as UNESCO Global Geoparks. As early as 2004, 25 European and Chinese Geoparks had founded the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). In autumn of that year Geopark Harz · Braunschweiger Land · Ostfalen became part of the network. In addition, there are various regional networks, among them the European Geoparks Network (EGN). These coordinate international cooperation. 22 Königslutter 28 ® 1 cm = 26 km 20 Oschersleben 27 18 14 Goslar Halberstadt 3 2 1 8 Quedlinburg 4 OsterodeOsterodee a.H.a.Ha H.. 9 11 5 13 15 161 6 10 17 19 7 Sangerhausen Nordhausen 12 21 In the above overview map you can see the locations of all UNESCO Global Geoparks in Europe, including UNESCO Global Geopark Harz · Braunschweiger Land · Ostfalen and the borders of its parts. The purpose of every UNESCO-Geopark is to protect the geological heritage and to promote environmental education and sustainable regional development. Actions which can infl ict considerable damage on geosites are forbidden by law. Moreover, a substan- tial number of contemporary scholarly works have erased the thin line between material evidence and its interpretation. As a consequence, the architectural remains of Polish Romanesque edifices are often considered the basis for wider comparative research. Meanwhile, fragmentarily preserved structures of Romanesque buildings have allowed scholars to conduct research on their origins and models, but they have rarely provided enough information for spatial recon- structions of them. This means that one might investigate the process of transposing patterns from the Holy Roman Empire to Poland instead of the influence of Polish masons’ lodges on each other. Therefore, this paper has two aims. The first is to look at how imperial pat- terns affected the main stone structures (cathedrals and collegiate 1 Originally, my paper entitled ‘In the Shadow of Salian and Hohenstaufen Cathedrals: The Artistic Influence of the Holy Roman Empire on Polish Romanesque Architecture in the Eleventh and Twelfth Centuries’ was given at the ‘Borrowing Images of Empire’ seminar during the Medieval Congress in Leeds in July 2014.

    Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt)

Sachsen-Anhalt (Saxony-Anhalt) axony-Anhalt is a state in the Snortheast of the Federal Republic of Germany, surrounded by the states of Brandenburg (to the northeast and east), Saxony (to the southeast), Thuringia (to the southwest and south), and Lower Saxony (to the west and northwest). Alarge part of the state was formerly Area 20,445 km2 / part of Saxony which, at that time, 7,894 sq miles Population 2.7 million also included the often partitioned state of Anhalt. It became a free state of the German Empire in 1918. In 1945 it became a province, and, in 1947, the state of Saxony-Anhalt was created, only to be broken up into districts in 1952. In 1990 the state of Saxony- Anhalt was finally reestablished. In terms of its population density and area, Saxony-Anhalt falls in the middle among the federal states. The north is more agricultural in character; the south, where the population density is somewhat higher than in the north, is more industrialized. The climate is influenced by its proximity to the sea and shows considerable variations due to a landscape which alternates from medium altitude mountain ranges to wide valleys. The north has abundant rainfall while the valleys of the rivers Saale, Unstrut, and Bode are among the driest areas in Germany. The state stretches along both sides of the River Elbe. The partially flat, partially gently rolling north with its great pine 282 forests (Altmark) is part of the north German lowlands. To the south, medium-sized mountain ranges begin. The highest mountain is the Brocken (1,142 m) in the eastern part of the Harz mountains.

Herzlich willkommen in Goslar. “The business location Goslar has many strengths!” Dear Readers, To just think of Goslar in terms of its 1000 years of history, cultural heritage, the Imperial Palace or its rich cultural offerings and leisure facilities would simply not do the city justice. Goslar is also a strong location for business. It is a city in which people can live and work in perfect balance. And this is a statement by which we can be measured. See for yourself: we have put together some figures on our performance on the following pages and set them in scene. Welcome to Goslar.

Together with specialists and ordinary individuals the congress would like to go into the questions of the role that the historical heritage of the city can play in its future and what actual opportunities arise from this for some IBA cities in particular. At the same time emphasis will be given to international discourse on this topic from the aspect of cities subject to demographic change. Maintaining, renewing and reconstructing the historic cities that have evolved, and ensuring their viability are central tasks and a challenge for local politics and urban planning. For East German cities in particular, that are very severely confronted with a dwindling population, economic stagnation and social disintegration, tackling the material and immaterial historical heritage seems to be of special importance. New, innovative approaches to the historical monuments discourse are under discussion. This starting point opens up special perspectives.
