The Met office has said that weather remained cold and dry in most parts of the country on Sunday. Dense fog prevailed over plain areas of Punjab and Sukkur division. Dense fog is likely to occur in plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh during the night and morning hours on Monday. As the blanket of fog disrupted normal traffic on motorways and national highways in Punjab and Sukkur division it also disrupted flight and train schedule due to poor visibility. With regard to synoptic situation the Met office said that a westerly wave is likely to enter western parts of the country tonight and likely to grip upper parts on Monday. It may persist over northern areas till Tuesday. Predicting rain/snowfall on Monday and Tuesday, it said rain/thunderstorm is expected at scattered places in Malakand, Hazara, Mardan, Quetta, and Zhob divisions, Fata, Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir while at isolated places in Bannu, Peshawar, Kohat, Kalat, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha divisions and Islamabad on Monday/Tuesday. They have high commercial value coupled with increasing global production and trade. Sea cucumbers, informally named as bêche-de-mer, or gamat, have long been used for food and folk medicine in the communities of Asia and Middle East. Nutritionally, sea cucumbers have an impressive profile of valuable nutrients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), and minerals, especially calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc. A number of unique biological and pharmacological activities including anti-angiogenic, anticancer, anticoagulant, anti-hypertension, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antithrombotic, antitumor and wound healing have been ascribed to various species of sea cucumbers. Therapeutic properties and medicinal benefits of sea cucumbers can be linked to the presence of a wide array of bioactives especially triterpene glycosides (saponins), chondroitin sulfates, glycosaminoglycan (GAGs), sulfated polysaccharides, sterols (glycosides and sulfates), phenolics, cerberosides, lectins, peptides, glycoprotein, glycosphingolipids and essential fatty acids. -

40 SPC Beche-de-mer Information Bulletin #40 – March 2020 Holothurians from Pakistan: New addition of Holothuria (Theelothuria) notabilis (Ludwig, 1875) and rediscovery of Actinocucumis typica (Ludwig, 1875) from the Karachi coast, northern Arabian Sea Quratulan Ahmed1* and Qadeer Mohammad Ali1 Abstract In total, 63 specimens of sea cucumbers were collected from the Sunehri (24°52’33.49’’ N, 66°40’40.20’’ E, on 19 January 2015) and Buleji coasts (24°50’20.41’’ N, 66°49’24.15’’ E on 31 August 2015) in the intertidal zone. Among them, Holothuria nota- bilis is a new record from Pakistan and Actinocucumis typica (Ludwig 1875) is rediscovered after 45 years (earlier recorded by Clark and Rowe in 1971). We present a morphological description and habitat characteristics of the collected specimens. The identified specimens are deposited in the repository of Marine Reference Collection and Resource Centre at the University of Karachi (catalogued as Holo-20 and Holo-21). Keywords: Holothuria notabilis, Actinopyga typica, northern Arabian Sea descriptions, and the distribution and habitat characteristics Introduction in the northern Arabian Sea of the new species Holothuria The number of holothurian species worldwide is about 1717 notabilis and the rediscovered species A. typica, 45 years after (Paulay 2014). Nineteen species – belonging to the class Clark and Rowe (1971). Holothuroidea – have been reported from Pakistan, of which eight belong to the family Holothuriidae, three to the family Methods Cucumariidae, two to the family Synaptidae, two to the fam- ily Sclerodactylidae and four to the family Phyllophoridae Specimens were collected from intertidal zones from Janu- (Tahera1992, 1997, 2004; Tahera and Tirmizi 1995; Tahera ary to December 2015 on Pakistan’s Karachi coast. -

MARITIME TOURISM: GLOBAL SUCCESS STORIES AND THE CASE OF PAKISTAN Naureen Fatima1 Muhammad Akhtar2 Abstract The coastal / maritime tourism is an important segment in a multi-trillion dollars and multivariate global tourism industry. It offers one of the new avenues and fastest growing areas for significant role in global economies. Various countries such as Maldives, Indian State of Kerala, Singapore and Thailand etc. have focused on maritime tourism with good governance practices evolved over period of time to earn substantial revenues from it. Pakistan has also immense maritime tourism potential with diversified natural, religious, and cultural tourism resources. But Pakistan’s maritime tourism is considered very weak due to various issues. With qualitative research, this paper attempts to explore and suggest solutions for the development of maritime tourism sector of Pakistan by analysing the tourism governance of global success stories and evaluating the nationwide potential and challenges. Arguments are developed that the factors behind the success stories of Maldives & Kerala state in India can act as guidance for taking initiatives on the proposed potential sites in order to uplift the maritime tourism sector in Pakistan. It is anticipated that the effective implementation of this paper’s recommendations would be instrumental in gearing up Pakistan’s Maritime economy. Since chemical defense compounds are also of great pharmaceutical interest, we pinpoint the importance of biological screenings that are a relatively fast, informative and inexpensive way to identify the most bioactive organisms prior to further costly and elaborate pharmacological screenings. In this study, we investigated the presence and absence of chemical defenses of 14 different sea cucumber species from three families (Holothuriidae, Stichopodidae and Synaptidae) against ecological factors such as predation and pathogenic attacks. We used the different sea cucumber crude extracts as well as purified fractions and pure saponin compounds in a portfolio of ecological activity tests including fish feeding assays, cytotoxicity tests and antimicrobial assays against environmental pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria. -

We surveilled RNA viruses inhabiting 8 species (representing 4 families) 13 of holothurian collected from four geographically distinct locations by viral metagenomics, 14 including a single specimen of Apostichopus californicus affected by a hitherto undocumented 15 wasting disease. The RNA virome comprised genome fragments of both single-stranded positive 16 sense and double stranded RNA viruses, including those assigned to the Picornavirales, Ghabrivirales, 17 and Amarillovirales. We discovered an unconventional flavivirus genome fragment which was most 18 similar to a shark virus. Ghabivirales-like genome fragments were most similar to fungal totiviruses 19 in both genome architecture and homology, and likely infected mycobiome constituents. 20 Picornavirales, which are commonly retrieved in host-associated viral metagenomes, were similar to 21 invertebrate transcriptome-derived picorna-like viruses. Sequence reads recruited from the grossly 22 normal A. californicus metavirome to nearly all viral genome fragments recovered from the wasting- 23 affected A. californicus. The greatest number of viral genome fragments was recovered from wasting 24 A.
